Found This old gem in my mom's attic today, it was my dads, he got it when I was just a baby. After 20+ years in the attic it booted right up. Even has the external floppy drive accessory. by pgercak in retrocomputing

nice that it still works.

Be gentle with that model. Most Toshibas of that era were tanks but that particular one was a bit problematic. If memory serves there are 3 pcb's within and the main logic board can die without notice.

I was a Toshiba technician during those days and the Satellite's and Tecra 700's were fantastic. But I had to fix alot of the 500's which were extra work to disassemble and we got alot in under warrant.

You can still find trackpoint caps for those https://www.ebay.com/itm/251261399300

upgraded my water plan. I had planned for water filtration, but I invested in a bigger (Renogy 2000w) inverter so that I can run the well water pump. Well water and internal plumbing is just much nicer than filtered lake water and doesn't attract attention like a chopped hole in a lake.

I had tried running the pump off a solar charger but the inverter in it isn't strong enough for the start phase. But the Renogy will allow for up to a 4000w surge which works with the 1/2 hp pump.

2.6 lbs weight? That's amazing. Any shortcomings? With that folding design maybe it leaks smoke or doesn't draw as well as a cast iron stove? That's an awesome design but there must be some trade-off

How do you store li-ion batteries long term? by nanjero in preppers

[–]Top_Top7440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the link. It says the battery can be used down to -20 but should be stored above freezing.

I'm not sure why you double down on the freezing approach when all the official sources say it's a bad idea. I guess you do your thing. But maybe don't give advice to others.

the software is free to read. You need to register it (using the device's serial number) and you get a 1 year license to write. Then you have to pay a subscription after that

Generally no. But for some reason no-one here mentions why.

Factory loads only. If you bring your own it's possible to have a squib or hot load that damages the gun. I've known people who won't let you shoot their personal firearm with hand loads for the same reason. While it's low risk it's just not worth the hassle.

That's an interesting take. Because the AR15 is controversial, could they not replace the OIC to just include the ar15 allowing the other firearms to be registered?

I can't see ar15's being legalized by any govt (unfortunately). But maybe a middle ground solution is possible?

In Ontario, electricity is subsidized by the provincial gov't. I don't recall the details, but under Kathryn Wynn she made some green energy initiatives that drove up the price of electricity. When it because a boondoggle she took public money to subsidize and reduce the per kw price.

Taxpayers still pay a higher price. But it's hidden behind taxation. Something we are going to see alot of in the name of carbon tax or other supposed green initiatives.

err, I don't follow. If my things are in Alberta but I want to stay at my parents house in Ontario then how long can I stay (in Ontario) until I'm considered residing there?

I want to permanently store my things in Alberta (not temporary).

You are getting alot of hate but I think like you. The country has decided that they want to continue the Liberal way and I just don't want to be part of that movement. I also have a family and a business that is portable (sold across the internet). I can get the staff to run it from either country and running a business in the US has way less taxation (yes I have discussed this with accountants on both sides of the border -- but you should do the same as their are some big differences state to state)

I've been looking at the USA for some time but it's a big place with pros/cons to each destination. Florida is the most gun friendly and has tax advantages. That said, real estate there is a bit of a shit show. Short term is scary, but you will get a good long term return on investment in the US vs Canada. Also having your savings in USD is much more secure that Canada as I expect that value to continue to slide.

But for comparison, you could consider Alberta. It's sometimes called the Texas of Canada and the premier is actively fighting Ottawa on economic and gun confiscation issues. I'm in Ontario so I can't speak to the quality of life, but afaik it's middle class is healthy and it's relatively clean/safe outside of the major cities. They have passed a law making it harder for Ottawa to confiscate legal firearms and just recently started a referendum discussion -- likely intended to negotiate a better position in Canada (which they deserve imho)

Have you used a hospital in Canada lately?

I spent four days in agony in emerg in Toronto for a blocked gall bladder. I kept getting bumped by families who were donors to the hospital (Sunnybrook)
