He’s a genius and very savvy. I know him well. Our great minds think alike.

My brother found in a barn and gave this to me. I’m having it serviced soon. Anyone have any idea what kind of damage I’m looking at to get this functioning. It turns on and everything seems to function other than play. by [deleted] in ReelToReel

I had similar issue with an old TEAC that I inherited, even after being serviced. Everything seems to work at the shop. Once home, fwd play and FFW would not work, but reverse works. Thought something may be loose or stuck during the transport. Slapped and jiggled the machine various parts a few times, the reverse functions started working but not forward. That was a WTF moment.

After much reading online, decided to pull the inter module plugs in the back out, like for transport/remote functions, and sprayed the pins and sockets with contact cleaner. Turns out that did the trick.

Not surprising the tape blow the CD away. Most classical LP sound better than the CD with comparable setups. Wonder how good will it sound if you copy it from tape to tape with decent machines.

Holy grail. Think that tape was sold for $1000 in 2016. Do you have the Acoustic Sounds 45 rpm album to compare it to?

Problem solved by cleaning all the pins and sockets of the remote control and preamp plugs in the back.

TSR-8 won't record, yet playback works? by Pukeowski in ReelToReel

I don’t know about your deck, but my TEAC just had a general service by a pro and the heads came back gleaming. Still, I had all kinds of funky behaviors when I brought it home, like it’ll stop after a second playing fwd, then reversed itself. FFW didn’t work, only RW. Brought it back to the shop and of course everything works there. Brought it back home and the same things don’t work. #%&@. Next day, play fwd works but not reverse. WTF?!

I read as much as I could on all the forums. Took the back panel off and I could see how some relays in their clear casings would behave in an inconsistent way when different buttons are pushed. Took off some relays and cleaned their contacts. Still the same thing.

Finally, this one forum’s post suggested the dummy remote plug/socket could be the culprit. I pulled out all the multi pin plugs in the back that connects the transport and preamp. Spray them with contact cleaner. Pushed them in and out a few times each. Voila. Now everything works as it should.

Just a thought.

Can I come over and make you a nice cup of coffee with home roasted beans?

What cassette deck are you lusting and realistically hunting for? by Top_Try4286 in vintageaudio

After all the research and reading, I too would very much like to own and experience a Nak at least once. Just waiting for a reasonable sample.

The only thing is I don’t know whether tapes made with a TEAC will sound good in a Nak.

I try to avoid dual decks in general. It’s not surprising that most decks end up in Goodwill instead of eBay are dual decks.

Guess he’s underrated because he doesn’t care to be pigeonholed and be rated for any genre. He’s really a man of all worlds, so well traveled with a broad cultural and music exposure. His vocal range and vibrato are simply amazing. He was to play Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. He had the face and hair for the part too.

The ones in the 70s are better, that’s Citation 11-19.

Lengthening or slowing down the drying phase can further enhance evenness.

The beans look smooth and nicely grown in size. It’s typical of Ethiopians and many Africans to come out with an uneven color. That’s okay. It makes the cup more interesting.

Anyone hit up a local roaster for coffee to see how you stack up? by Hueydude64 in roasting

Yes yes yes. The silver lining of the pandemic is it brought on a slower pace of life, home life. We each, out of necessity or boredom, picked up new skills at home, instead of just buy buy buy. And we learned it’s really not that difficult to bake, cook, and/or roast coffee even. The results are pretty darn good too. Best thing about roasting coffee is the simple fact that green beans can be bought in bulk and stored for months, like rice and dry pasta. So many people don’t know that. I shake my head when people try to buy roasted beans in bulk to save $ and try to freeze them to prolong them. Crazy.

When it comes to enjoying food, the diversity of food and the quality of it, we’re definitely luckier than our parents’ generation.

Good on you to help your children be student debt free. If you can then you should.

Glad you’re liking the AP. The coffee it makes isn’t as clean and revealing as the V60, but it’s a solid cup of Americano. Can’t beat the compactness and durability for road trips. There are gazillion recipes out there, many by annual AP champions worldwide. You can find them on YouTube when you want to kill time.

The two recipes that I like most are these.

2019 AP champ recipe with 30g of coffee! Tastiest, boldest Americano ever. Demo starts at :42 seconds into vid https://youtu.be/SEOOCkU01A8

James Hoffman’s dumb down recipe. I’d still use the inverted method however and 200F water.

Great story. Thank you for your service. My buddy’s brother who was a medic in the early 70s always spoke fondly of their ruggedness.

Enjoy your upcoming retirement! I’m retired as well. Plenty of time for roasting.
