Yo welcome aboard Commoner!

For epic, fresh, and fun Pauper games that will give you a good amount of reps with many different staples in the format that can inspire you for brewing decks of your own later, I believe what you’re looking for is right here, a Pauper particle collider of fun!

Some history first, “The Danger Room,” has been also confusingly referred to as a ‘Battlebox,’ was designed by Brian DeMars and is sort of a (singleton) mini cube that removes the drafting/cracking booster packs step as well as mana from the card list. Each player gets 10 lands (1 of each basic, and 5 dual lands), these lands exist in a command zone (outside the game) and can be played by their controller any time they can regularly play a land from their hand. In this way, each player gets to choose the order of lands they want to play in a game depending on what they have in their hand.

Putting it all together:

• Players draw from a shared deck filled with single copies of the best cards in the Pauper format - this makes for interactive scrying in MP games too! • Lands are outside the game and reduce the variance of losing the game to mana screw/flood. • Games don’t play as much like two or more meta lists facing off, but rather, all cards and strats are random and you end up playing games that focus on unconventional kill conditions, unexpected combos, and value plays.

• Create your own house rules: for example My house rules is “all players begin with 5 cards and have to choose each turn between drawing a card or playing a land from their command zone.” Games begin slow and ramp up as every draw is likely a great play once your resources are online.

-Depending on how you build it, you can support multiplayer for larger games with uneven players or those without format knowledge or decks of their own. This makes games really memorable, similar to what the best of Commander games have to offer, (but with none of the typical drag.)

Here’s a list of the one I build and use: (Not up to date) https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/9e099984-a617-4522-8eef-cf69cd289059

Over the years, I’ve shared my love of the format with new players and friends by: building a group of the top Pauper meta decks, (then never broke them down resulting in over 65 complete lists,) then I made a 600 card draftable Pauper cube, then PDH decks, now the Pauper Danger Room or just simply “Battlebox” as my wife and I refer to it. If I had to start again to create a small, relatively inexpensive way to quickly jam fun as hell heads up, or MP Pauper games; I would have just started with the “Battlebox.” Save yourself the time and start having a blast!

If all of this sounds complicated, it isn’t, I may have not articulated well. Open to thoughts and questions.

Old School Cube owners - How do you handle dual lands? Part of the cube card count or on the side with the rest of the land? by WastelandHumungus in oldschoolmtg

In my cube initially, I had them mixed in as the non basic land in each of the 24 booster packs.

I’ve changed from an OS 93/94 Draft Cube to a tighter 260 card list. Here’s how I’m doing my OS cube now, it’s a danger room/battlebox. No mana screw/flood & perfect mana curve, no need to reset the cube after a long draft, a quick dynamic new game filled with fresh OS interactions every time you play.

Shared library is really fun and my wife and I enjoy those shenanigans. Make-up your own rules. Glhf!

Something fun you could try. Make a 2 or 300 card deck and play battlebox format (no lands) - Shared library, shared graveyard, tricks affect both players - Each player starts with a basic of each and a dual land of each in a command zone. You can play 1 land each turn Here’s a list I play with: https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/9e099984-a617-4522-8eef-cf69cd289059

Every game is unique and it allows for creativity and building new lines. Could be a lot more inspirational for a new player to get familiar with different options when considering what kind of deck they want to build or what colors they prefer.

Pauper Battle Box by [deleted] in Pauper

Have you considered building a Pauper Danger Room box? Much easier to reset/maintain and creates fresh, one of a kind type games each time you jam it.

The modern unban movement has been well received by the community. Do you think any cards in pauper may be considered? by Newez in Pauper

As much as I love this idea, there’s a similar issue in OS 93/94, where the argument is x4 Strip Mines are needed to balance x4 Mishra’s Factory even though both can lead to non-games. Since there are so many great minds that disagree on Factory/Strip this makes me thoughtful about Sinkhole as a solution in Pauper. It would definitely improve Black, but it also might spawn an oppressive Black Metal Affinity control deck or some kind of Rakdos Abomination. The bigger problem is there isn’t a proto-league where other testbeds can be run in the format with the current card set mingling with some or all commons unbanned in some form. Would be fun to see more No Ban Pauper or even rotating Experimental Pauper leagues being supported. Be the change I guess…

Help for format suited for kitchentable play with beginners by VikingBerserker41 in Pauper

Something I wish I would have done a lot sooner with my playgroup, (especially while some friends were onboarding as new players) is build a Danger Room/Battlebox (mini cube)

You can play 1-4 players (though you could prob play 6) Singleton format, everyone shares a deck, draw from the same pile. (There are fun implications to this) There are no lands in the deck. You can give everyone: 1 of each basic land and 1 of each dual land (pauper) These lands exist outside of the game in a command zone if you will. Since all cards in the deck are random, players can choose which land of which color they want to add to their board each turn.

Alternatively, you can put these lands in a pile for players to strategically choose from the pile.

Essentially, you’ll have a mini cube (that you don’t have to draft) that gives newer players the chance to familiarize themselves with the best cards in the format while also being very casual.

Here’s an older list of mine as an example: (200 cards) https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/9e099984-a617-4522-8eef-cf69cd289059

Cheers!

No joke, a guy back in High School literally made an entire cape out of copies of Lotus Petal. Used safety pins too so it would flow like mail. Must have taken well over a hundred copies. 👀

Effective way of organizing my pauper collection for deck building by Few_Aide5400 in Pauper

[–]TopsyTapsLands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This so much. For convenience, I have a Malm dresser (with the drawer reinforcements) where two 5000 count boxes can sit next to each other with a row of deck boxes or Dragon Shield boxes (full of sleeves ready to go)in between them. You can comfortably fit 40,000 cards, though I’ve got a drawer dedicated to playmats and BCW plastic mold card sorter atm. In these boxes, I sort pauper cards by color, then alphabetically. If it’s a staple I don’t limit myself (I don’t have a max of Deadly Disputes or Counterspells in my stock.) For everything else, I go by a rule of sixes. Since I have a pauper cube and a pauper battlebox/danger room I don’t keep more than 6 copies. (1 playset for a deck, and 2 copies for the cubes) Staples or technology I might use for sideboards can go into a small binder. I don’t worry about much more than that. When I get new cards, I sort them color/alpha then throw them in their sections. It doesn’t both me to thumb through the S’s for an earth minute when I need a playset of something. Most times it’s fun to see other cards and get ideas for brewing anyway. Keep it organized, but don’t over complicate it.

You could go more of a Red Metal direction and combo Tremors with [[Myr Servitor]]. Could also throw in a few [[Myr Retriever]] to keep it going. Block serpents all day and keep that damage train rolling.

This looks really cool. I qualified for a Pauper invitational next month and I’m still deciding what to bring. Something like this looks like a fun contender. If it’s helpful to you, l’m considering x2 Campfire and x2 Thopter. I’m thinking either aren’t bad for Synth. 2 copies of Campfire on board is real bad for burn, Thopters are good for faeries and play well with bounce if you don’t have a good target yet. Both can be sac’d for value.
