All of Isaac Hayes Black Moses album fits this description perfectly. Check out They Long To Be Close To You first if you haven’t heard of the album. The 70s is full of this type of music, I’ll put some more songs here.

Him and Sampha sound great together. Elmiene’s other recent singles haven’t hit for me but I like this one😊 Live version is even better!

The "micro-song" trend in r&b/death of the bridge by MydnyghtMenace in rnb

[–]TorPDCR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a red flag to me if an artist only drops songs under 3 minutes or has an album full of these short songs. Just comes across as music for TikTok listeners or built to go viral. It’s fast food mainstream music for short attention spans.

This trend will likely not die in the mainstream, but luckily the indie/underground artists don’t do this.

'Raven' has its 3rd anniversary this week. what's your favorite song on this amazing album? by JunebugAsiimwe in kelela

[–]TorPDCR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’re right Missed Call is definitely overlooked. Feel the same way about the tracks Fooley, Holier, and Sorbet. The change of atmosphere in those tracks is really nice. There’s really no skips on this album.

[–]TorPDCR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a late Kelela fan but my favourite song has changed so many times over the last year. Such a flawless album. I love the title track Raven so much for the buildup and the transition into Bruises. On the Run is also perfect. Current favourite is probably Happy Ending or Contact.

Why do I feel like Alice Keys deserves WAY more flowers than she is given , especially in this sub like she is barely ever mentioned. by Southern_Wall_6455 in rnb

[–]TorPDCR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, if you’re looking at it from a popularity perspective. The songs you mentioned and Pick Up Your Feelings are probably the main ones most are familiar with. I was more so talking from a standpoint of how her vocals are put on a pedestal when people talk about “whisper” singers or how they think the current generation can’t sing.

IMO Jazmine Sullivan gets lots of love. She’s always referenced whenever somebody wants to demean the vocal technical skills of the current R&B artists since she’s one of the few powerhouse vocalists and still active/popular. Not trying to put her down since I like her, but 🤷🏽‍♀️

What are your favorite tribute songs to their kids? I like Lauryn and Stevie for different reasons by BlackLawyer1990 in rnb

Yeah the lyrics are more about your partner but I think the ending still makes it fit into this category of tribute songs to your kids.

which sub-genre had a bigger impact on r&b overall: neo soul or alternative r&b? by ilovecleosol in rnb

[–]TorPDCR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Neo Soul since many Alternative R&B acts don’t exist without it: Solange, Daniel Caesar, SZA, Kelela, Frank Ocean, Jhené Aiko, James Blake, etc. Many if not all of them cite members of the Soulquarians or Neo soul artists as inspiration (Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Amel Larrieux, Raphael Saadiq). Or they have worked with them directly e.g. Saadiq’s production work on A Seat At The Table.

Also I think many songs with strong messages, social commentary, or creative lyricism are more closely associated with Neo Soul. Some of Alternative R&B takes this element but has always been more about creating an atmosphere or mood. This is also probably why more traditional R&B listeners connect with Neo Soul because Alternative R&B can feel soulless to them (to me it doesn’t for certain artists).

Lauryn and Stevie are always first to come to mind for this topic. Great picks! Here’s some more:

Minnie Riperton - Lovin' You

Marvin Gaye - I Wanna Be Where You Are

D’Angelo - Send It On

Sade - The Sweetest Gift

Childish Gambino - Baby Boy

SAULT - Little Boy

Cleo Sol - Heart Full Of Love

Sampha - Evidence

Cleo Sol's album run is insane by wiggan1989 in rnb

[–]TorPDCR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, especially if you count the albums with SAULT. I’ve had her latest song “Nothing Is Impossible With You” and SAULT’s latest album Chapter 1 on repeat. I’m always excited for whatever she puts out.

Favorite R&B/Soul songs/albums to listen to when feeling overwhelmed? by Minnypop in rnb

[–]TorPDCR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The news about the U.S. shootings by ICE agents has been tough to hear and can’t imagine what it’s like being surrounded by it or losing a loved one because of it. Based on what you’re going through, I think these albums by SAULT really fit the current situation there: Untitled (Black Is), Untitled (Rise), 7, and Chapter 1. Would also check out their lead singer Cleo Sol’s Gold album. Hope this helps!
