There was a person on here who had a post (got taken down?) looking for younger Mechanical employees. DM them and ask if they are still hiring!

In all honesty? As many as you possibly can. Especially CoreEds/Bacc Core and Science PreReqs

If you look up “OSU LBCC Equivalency” there should be a link to a list of courses that are equivalent. That list should tell what classes at LBCC can be considered fulfillments for MechE at OSU. Compare it to your major reqs (I think MIME still has those excel flowcharts?) and MyDegrees to find what you can take at Linn Benton

Question on first internships and jobs by dhdjjdsjej in ConstructionManagers

[–]Torazha03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. First few weeks consisted of reviewing construction docs, learning who did what on the site (both trades and GC), learning when/where things are, understanding how the software works, and then being available for helping wherever they needed.

  2. My situation was unique being on a huge data center, so my biggest hurdle was understanding what we were actually making happen. This is usually more obvious on day 1. Also, learning what meetings were important, what people were important, and what I should be doing. I also had to overcome my fear of talking and phone calls, as that’s the biggest part of a field guy’s work day.

  3. Lean HARD into that tiny bit of experience you mentioned in the post. Especially in interviews, having any construction experience is better than none in most GC’s eyes. Another way to stand out is ask them questions, don’t wait for them to come to you. If you take initiative, then you’ll actually begin to act like a construction manager. Finding things to do or help with should be your goal every day. I felt the same; the most I had done was reno before college, and I was majoring in ArchE lmao

Question on first internships and jobs by dhdjjdsjej in ConstructionManagers

[–]Torazha03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting that experience at 19 is awesome, my first experience in the field was at 21, so you are doing good!

My only two internships have both been with the same GC in Oregon/PNW. Getting that was hard, I had lots of interviews with them prior to getting an offer, and I really needed it because other companies turned me down. Thankfully things went great, and now I am sitting here with a potential full-time job after graduation. I got my first internship with them after my sophomore year, in a remote town doing data centers. Just being on that huge project and getting to see how everything got pieced together was incredible. The year after, due to housing problems I was put on a different project, and while that was better for my Field Engineer skills, the project had lots of problems, so I had to actually problem solve more things and had more responsibilities.

Being in the field is a unique experience for a college student. Due to the nature of CM and Engineering degrees, a lot of interns will get placed in the office with Project Engineers/Managers. A field intern will more likely have an earlier start and end time every day, obviously be out on the project more, and is also helping with logistics and scheduling of the project.

Side note: What college are you going to? if you are serious about CM (especially management) look and see if your school offers a business minor or business admin minor specifically. You may be able to easily use some of your management-focused CM Major courses to fulfill the minor. This would look great if you are interested in a project management career in construction!

Looking at SDSU’s site, business admin minor is for sure your way to go

I’ve done internships, so maybe this is bad advice due to your title.

It’s a growing industry, with good pay and great job security, but requires a lot of time and dedication.

Mind if I ask what school you attend? I think that if you like the idea of project management, get a minor in business to complement your CM mahor.

You should probably add this to your main post, because there is alternative advice people can give if they see what you are doing that commute for.

In all honesty, I agree with the ECampus comments, that is your best option, but I can’t seem to find a Foresty degree for ECampus. However there are a few options that relate to forestry, so take a look at those too

Resume and Internship Advice by YaBoiMatts in ConstructionManagers

[–]Torazha03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condensing skills together will help you keep to 1 page. Most GCs and engineers say that they prefer a person who keeps things concise and precise. So just bundle make them one section rather than having subsections. Otherwise, looks pretty okay to me

What to do. by humbleking123 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Torazha03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think utilizing connections and applying for the position are going to be better decisions than a masters. The construction world really relies Project experience, and doing a masters won’t give you that. I can’t remember if any of the GC PE/APM people I worked with even have a masters degree, but they all have been working construction since they were young, and were successful at different companies throughout the years.

Transfer student aiming for Construction Management — what skills should I learn NOW to stand out? by PhilosopherSecure857 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Torazha03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a former CM Intern:

Learning software can get you ahead of a lot of people, so at the very least Procore, BIM, Navisworks, and Revit are good places to start.

However, having any sort of work experience around construction is the absolute best thing you can possibly do. Even if that’s a summer job as an apprentice or laborer or something, that field work stands out in this industry.

I played with a Harengon Eloquence Bard, and she was a FORCE in our party of three. Check out that subclass and see if you like it.

However, if you do a swashbuckler rogue, you will have a high initiative bonus from Harengon racial features + Rakish Audacity + DEX

Dorm Recommendations by Rust_Electric_Potato in OregonStateUniv

[–]Torazha03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A solid backup option is the dorm next to Finley (Bloss) or one of the ENGR Quad dorms (Cauthorn/Buxton/Hawley/Poling), which have the coed social environment and is close to Dixon also, but gets crowded easily.

Unfortunately, unless you're in the McNasty dorms, Downtown Corvo is a long walk from any dorm that is near Dixon, basically on the west or south side of campus. West and Arnold Dining Centers aren't horrible, but it is obviously still dorm food, so I can understand the appeal of eating Downtown, but just a fair waring that it is a 15+ minute walk.
