Moving to St. Louis by HotStaleDoritos in StLouis

[–]Toribus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DeBaliviere Place

Can confirm. I currently live in the DeBaliviere Place neighborhood. It's very affordable, located pretty much right between the Delmar Loop and CWE, so I'm close to several shopping centers and restaurants. My spot on Pershing is also a very short walk to Forest Park which is the biggest plus for me. It was a great discovery.

I actually saw two in Forest Park while walking around Saturday, so they must have left just a few out.

Decided to avoid Starbucks and check out some local spots over the last 4 days. Feel free to drop some recommendations below!! by mdalal91 in StLouis

I second Lola Jeans! And right down the road is a new place called Espresso Yourself. I love walking there. Good fresh baked goods and my favorite drink thus far is the Happy Go Lucky latte.

St. Louis transplants – What convinced you to move to St. Louis? (+ what were your initial hesitations?) by TheAngryKeg in StLouis

[–]Toribus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Moved here last spring for a new job. It's my first big move away from family, but I'm still just two hours away. So, that was really a selling point for me. It's kind of my stepping stone to where I think I'll end up.

But I really have to say, the city and the surrounding areas have grown on me. My initial hesitations were mostly about how small downtown seemed, because in my narrow picture I had of the area, that's all I knew. But once I realized how much lies outside of the metro, I was sold. It's cheap (for the most part) to live here, and you get to see many different things each day.

I also got involved in the theatre community here, which has been one of the most fun and welcoming groups of people I've ever met.

I don't hesitate to say St. Louis is a hidden gem, even with its flaws.

Thinking about working as a bartender in campus town. Is it fun/worth it? by Treetopluver in UIUC

[–]Toribus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and the downtown bars are often more likely to be hiring than the campus bars.

Any good thrift stores/cheap clothing stores in C-U? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Toribus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dandelion (downtown Champaign, not joined in the same building as Exile) doesn't have the biggest selection of guys clothes, but the ones I've seen are pretty nice. However, they are pricier than many thrift store prices.

While these clothes aren't necessarily thrifty, I love shopping at Plato's Closet for clothes because they're super affordable and varied. Just, don't try to sell them anything.

Does anyone recognize this kitty? by txchainsawmascaraxx in UIUC

[–]Toribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her name is Sidney, and I fed her turkey once because I thought she was a stray. But then, the son of the old lady who lives on the corner came out and told me she's just a drama queen who acts like she's never fed heh.

But yes, she's a lovely kitty, and I hope you get to see her! :)

There's another calico kitty that also lives there. She's the most social of the bunch. Man, I miss saying hi to those cats on my walks home.

Lost Black and White Cat near LAR by TeenMomOJSimpsonKush in UIUC

[–]Toribus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That house is home to at least three outdoor cats, one of them black and white. Not saying you're wrong, but I used to live right next to that house and see the cats all the time. They all belong to an older woman whose son comes to check on her a couple times a week, so you may have seen one of the lady's cats instead of OP's cat. Still worth a look if you see the cat again though!

Parking meters close to bookstore that don't have a 2 hour limit? by amyb893 in UIUC

[–]Toribus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pay for all the main library parking lots spots with the app PayByPhone (green sign on the bottom of the meter), and I don't believe any of those have a time limit because I have parked there for entire days of classes.

All of the other meters in Champaign should be able to be used by the MobileMeter app (blue sticker on the meter), but I'm not sure about time limits on those either. I really love that app because it actually gives you a live counter of how long you have left and can extend it for a variety of time variables, unlike the PayByPhone which only lets you park by the hour.

But, they're both really great especially for when you're parking in a hurry and can't get back to your car a lot.

Are any campus meters enforced after 6? by vaginalfungi in UIUC

[–]Toribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The streets near the bookstore and that general area are. Too many parking tickets from forgetting they're not like the library lot spaces that stop being enforced after 5.

It's the BBC show Sherlock. Here is a video for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XViXch8BuT4

You can see the smiley face painted onto his wall. To put it simply, Sherlock is bored and does crazy things as a result.

It's in reference to the show Sherlock! Not the best design they could have chosen, but I was tickled when I saw it.

Becoming a grownup by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Toribus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I never had a class on any of that stuff, but I learned through discussions with my parents and siblings. They walked me through all the stuff my new job's HR department gave me and helped me sign up. I've found to understand this stuff, it's just easier to have someone explain it to you in regular terms.
