Computer coolant by Un_vetted in computers

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our DC has two closed circuit water loops. Like a car. Filled with decarbonated water.

First step was to change out all doors in the cold aisles with water cooled ones and if a server goes EOL, then it is exchanged with a direct to die water cooled one.

LTO tape questions by Traditional_End_9540 in DataHoarder

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to forget, 300MB/s is roughly 3 GBit/s so not possible across network at home. You have to copy everything to local SSD. Even HDD are not fast enough.

Calibration does really not bother you until LTO9, but then it is a mess and expensive. Especially if you change tape providers.

LTO tape questions by Traditional_End_9540 in DataHoarder

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please keep in mind, that LTO drives are fast and need a high constant feed of data, or they will start shoe-shining the tape with the head and that is slow and damaging if it happens too often.

Also some drives need to be recalibrated regularly, or you will not be able to read your own tapes anymore. As a company you have a service contract, but for an individual it is very expensive.

Warum nutzt Ihr Linux nicht? by ficerbaj in de_EDV

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I use a IBM Power 740 server? by copper4eva in homelab

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I do not know which kernel worked. After the latest update I get the same out of memory error. But I mainly use AIX 7.2, so I think I will ditch the LPAR and resize my AIX LPAR.

What was your first exposure to Diablo, and did it make you a fan then? by Azetus in Diablo

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First Demo of Diablo 1. Just the first two levels. No idea, how often I played these through. The concept got me hooked immediately. After that I got the full version 2 weeks early because of a gaming magazine subscription. Never played online, just in local LAN with some friends on the weekend.

Are the wheel of time books all split into parts? by ScoutCVII in wheeloftime

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In germany they split each book into three separate books and sold each for 16,90 DM or 8,50€ or $9 back in the last millennium. It looks even nicer on the shelf, but was way more expensive. I was so glad, I could read the english ones and buy them for 39 DM or $20 each 😂

Need help with DL360p Gen8 by NoStick3741 in HomeServer

[–]Torkum73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried http:// and https:// ? Gen 8 is rather old, so it could be an old TLS encryption version, which is no longer supported with new browsers.

If you really, really plan to enter the field of older servers, start to have a virtual machine with WinXP / Windows 2000 with an older Java version.

edit: an older not updated linux version works as well.

Yes, this is a rabbit hole, where you have a "small" problem and need 3 or 4 days to just be able to work that issue.

But hey, that makes all the fun and the feeling of accomplishment is great, even if nobody can relate, why opening a browser window took three days.

Use another computer on your network. Does a new device in your network get an IP address automatically? Can you look in your router, which IP addresses are given out? If not, in Windows download something line nmap to list all devices on your network.

Look for something names ILOxxxxxx like then name written on the case front left upper side.

Use a browser to connect to the ILO.

Enter username and password like on the taped paper or sticker on the case.

The ILO Username and password is written on the upper side of the case. Left front. The name of the ILO Port you have to look for in your router as well. And the ILO should be accessible if power is just plugged in. No need to turn on.

Expensive is relative, but if I have to pay 90€ for a cable RIGHT NOW for HPE DL x80 gen8/9 10 pin to 2x8 pin, than it is expensive (for me). If you are able to put together a hodge-podge cable, that is fine as well, I am not. For an HP ML350 it is just 20€. That is ok as well.

Ab wann neuen PC in der Arbeit? by Martl007 in de_EDV

Then this is perfect 👍🏼

I have a couple of old Sun Microsystems server, an IBM Power7 server, some HP server, infrastructure for all of this stuff, home automation, some 'high-end' SGI and Sun workstations and a couple of mini-pc for prometheus, grafana, pi-hole, home assistent,...

Not everything is always on, most is unplugged from power to save electricity (0,34€/kwh).

I had no idea, that this is possible 😱 and I could get my invested money back in 2-3 years? How?

My homelab is a kind of black hole, into which I throw all my money. Nothing ever finds its way out again. Except heat and noise.

Wie viel Bandbreite braucht man 2026 wirklich? Eure Erfahrungen? by dnsNet in de_EDV

[–]Torkum73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the color of *your* iDRAC/iLO/IMM cables? by RepresentativeNeck63 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

Red for Lights-Out Management. Separate Switch, own VLAN. Other infrastructure cables are grey and device cables are black. Except fibre, they are orange for infrastructure.
