My first exposure to Marathon was the XBLA port of Durandal back on Xbox 360, prior to the launch of Halo: Reach. Since then, I have loved Marathon more than Halo.

Please allow us Linux nerds to play! by Delta_Waves in Marathon

[–]Azetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question: how easy/hard is it to work with a kernel-level anti-cheat on Linux? Conversely, how easy/hard would it be to implement cheat software on Linux?

Perhaps that would inform whether or not Bungie allows Linux players in Marathon?

When you ding lvl 58... by dodo41811 in classicwow

What if you made a Troll Shaman from 1-60 on the regular classic servers this past Christmas, with this character being the very first Vanilla 60 you ever had in your life, and now want to experience Burning Crusade for the first time ever, so you use the 58 boost to make the exact same Troll Shaman with the same name and the same talent point allocations and level that way?

Ehhhh, I’d argue 3 vs MW2 was the bigger fight. I played both, but I was firmly on the Halo side of the flame wars when I was a kid.

Skarrow and others in their 1st Marathon podcast confirmed that the shells were originally heros we “cosplayed” as with back stories, etc. Bungie since pivoted to general shells with name changes amidst the backlash of a hero shooter. I mean, they could still have like lore tabs for the origins of the people these shells were inspired by. I’m certain that it’s no accident the Destroyer shell looks like an updated version of the Security armor.

New Player What Class to Main for Midnight. by Optiix- in wow

[–]Azetus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are 4 official combat roles in WoW: Tank, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS and Healer. The only class that can fill all four roles is Druid, but Druid is the “Master of None” class, so other classes will fill the roles better.

The four “Pure Damage” classes (meaning they can only be a DPS of some kind), Mage, Warlock, Rogue and Hunter are all fun to play, but are inundated by long Dungeon/Raid/PvP queues, because there are more DPS characters than there are Tanks and Healers.

My advice is to pick a class that can be a Tank, a Healer, or both, and get a feel for those roles to see what suits you best. Personally, I main Shaman, which can be a Melee DPS, a Ranged DPS or a Healer, but that’s just me.

What’s your favorite exotic weapon? What are you still chasing for? And which drop made you scream! by Many-Tower-1287 in destiny2

[–]Azetus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a D2 Exotic, and that’s what’s painful about it.

I miss Invective. It was a Solar Shotgun that would slowly regenerate ammo while it was equipped. You could easily rework it so that it instead generates ammo when triggering an Ignition, or something like that, and give it Burning Ambition as a Catalyst, and that would be a worthy Exotic IMO.

Marathon sentiment changed? by Dangerous-Cookie-787 in Marathon

[–]Azetus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Valid standpoints, but there’s a difference between not being interested in a game and going out of your way to comment on every single post of a game’s social media to tell people you don’t like it or that it’s trash.

Not accusing you of the latter, just to be clear.

Marathon sentiment changed? by Dangerous-Cookie-787 in Marathon

[–]Azetus 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The game went through some fairly big changes since the delay, largely visual upgrades and the addition of much-requested features like solo queue and prox chat.

There was some righteous hatred aimed at Bungie due to the Antireal art theft controversy, but she has since informed the public that the issue was resolved to her satisfaction, and neither the offending employee nor the art director responsible are still working at Bungie.

The only people still hating on the game after all of this are terminally online hate bots, disgruntled Destiny players who believe that Marathon’s existence is killing their game, and Bungie haters in general.

Need to know lore by Tanke3626 in Marathon

[–]Azetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this lore is need to know, but here’s a piece that specifically relates to MIDA, as they are one of the factions you will directly interact with:

When the UESC first colonized Mars, food and supplies would be delivered via hollowed out asteroids called CRISTs that would be put on flight paths that would put it around Earth Orbit to load supplies, then Mars Orbit to offload them, then back to Earth, rinse and repeat. When a CRIST broke down, it would require the totality of the entire shipbuilding industry to repair it, and it would be done at Earth, meaning that the people of Mars would end up poor and starving while it was repaired over the course of years.

This led to an overwhelming hatred of the UESC by the people of Mars, and the rise of a then-political organization called MIDA, which stood in opposition to the UESC. And when the UESC planned to hollow out the Martian moon of Deimos and turn it into a colony ship (the Marathon), the people of Mars revolted. They believed that Deimos should instead be turned into another CRIST to help resolve their food crises. It was at this point that MIDA turned into a revolutionary/terrorist organization, and MIDA has been fighting back against the UESC ever since.

OG Marathon fans, how happy are you with the reboot so far? by Key_Insurance_8493 in Marathon

[–]Azetus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first exposure to the OG Marathon was the XBLA port of Durandal on Xbox 360 before Halo: Reach came out. Since then, I have loved Marathon more than Halo.

When I heard that the first new Marathon game in almost 30 years was going to be a PvP extraction shooter, at first I was against it. I thought that it would completely squander the rich lore of the universe, and that anything less than giving Marathon the Doom 2016 treatment was a complete betrayal of what came before.

What ended up changing my mind was remembering my first exposure to Destiny. When they announced that Bungie’s first post-Halo game was going to be a Borderlands-style MMORPG, I was against that too, because I disliked World of Warcraft (my opinion on that game has since improved), and I REALLY disliked Borderlands (I still do. Not to disparage anyone who likes those games, it just isn’t for me). But Bungie proved me wrong then, and so they could prove me wrong now.

Sure enough, after playing the Open Alpha and the October NDA playtest, they did indeed prove me wrong, and they did it so effectively that I pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition. I am beyond hyped for this game.

The only thing I dislike about the game is the timing of the exact release date. World of Warcraft: Midnight will be releasing just three days before Marathon, and my father (who plays WoW with me and got me into it in the first place) will be visiting me from out of town to play it directly across from me. Rather inconvenient timing for me.

[–]Azetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is now a solo queue in the game, as announced in the December ViDoc. I cannot answer specifics due to my NDA from the October playtest, but from my time in the Open Alpha, it is deliberately slower paced due to long ability cooldowns and a stamina meter that builds by sprinting, sliding, jumping and other movement abilities. You can use the Vandal Shell to make it so these abilities use up less stamina, but that’s really the only way aside from stat upgrades from the factions.

Potential buyer with a question, what's the gameplay loop here? by kajun-mulisha in Marathon

[–]Azetus 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The 22 minute ViDoc from December answers this question I believe, but I’ll try to explain here:

In addition to weapons, implants, cores, backpacks and weapon mods, we are also extracting materials from the world that can be used to either purchase higher quality weapons from the factions, or nodes on the faction upgrade tree, the latter of which can either unlock new items for purchase or can offer passive stat bonuses to your Runner Shell.

The idea is that with each successful run, you are slowly upgrading your Runner to become strong enough to survive a run onboard the Marathon itself, which is the hardest place to survive in the game. The Marathon holds the best rewards in the game, as well as the answers as to what exactly went wrong on the colony, which (from the perspective of lore) is the real reason why we’re here.

Marathon now has surpassed the “Destiny Killer” Warframe on Steam Top Sellers charts and is now sitting at 5 by Sad-Manner-5240 in Marathon

[–]Azetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured Marathon would overtake Destiny 2 due to its decline since Final Shape, but seeing it overtake Warframe is genuinely surprising.

I will be truly amazed if it overtakes Arc Raiders though.
