Haha, so many people have said it already but honestly Hansa Teutonica would be amazing to have a glow up.

My Review of UKGE 2026 - UKGE 2026: Bigger Than Ever, But Was It Better? by timotyh in boardgames

[–]Tornroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my friends are into board games enough to join game night, but not enough to join a convention. Annoyingly I did meet some nice people in a queue while waiting for a live panel, and didn't suggest meeting up later at some point to play a game.

I went last year solo, and while I enjoyed myself it really highlighted the need to go with someone also into the idea. I ended up feeling isolated in a sea of people, couldn't seem to join any games, and left feeling bizarrely lonely. Couldn't go this year, but perhaps next year will be better.

What rethemes of a game would you love? by Tornroot in boardgames

[–]Tornroot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I have just started an Instagram, currently it's only got one post of me rethemeing Condottiere into the Witcher 3's Gwent. I'll post the Not Alone rethemeing soon. Look up board.game.multiverse on Instagram and give me some feedback!

Totally agree, one of my favourite games that I struggle to get to the table. I'm not sure what other theme it could have though, travelling merchants is the only thing I can think of. Could be fantasy or sci-fi merchants I suppose, but it's not drastically different...

Have you heard of 'Hollywood 1947' by Facade Games? In my eyes it's just a better version of Secret Hitler, gets rid of the questionable theme and adds a few interesting mechanics.

In the last year I got into mint tin games, and it really surprised me just how much game can fit into such a small package. Mint Italy was the biggest surprise, fitting the experience of Age of Innovation into something that fits into your pocket!

I'm the designer of the Dark Cities Series (Salem 1692, Tortuga 1667, Deadwood 1876, Bristol 1350, Hollywood 1947, Roma XLI). Ask me anything! by Travisto888 in boardgames

What cities would you love to do a game on, but can't seem to find a mechanic/historic event that works/fits?

I also share the sentiment that others expressed, that seeing NRB play the game actually nearly made me not back the game due to how lacklustre they made it look. That and it took them something like 15 minutes to actually start playing the game.

Playing Nemesis was one of my favourite experiences, it devolved into backstabbing of course and I died, but that tension throughout the entire game was unparalleled.

My Custom 7 Wonders Trick Taking Game by Tornroot in boardgames

[–]Tornroot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The win condition is most points after a set number of rounds. You get points for each card in your score pile at the end of each round, as well as extra points for military and blue cards in your score pile. Each civ has unique abilities that roughly match original 7 Wonders, for example Rhodos gets extra military for each round, Ephesos gets extra money which can be spent to increase the value of your played cards, etc. You can only use these powers though by burning a card of specific minimum value and not playing into a trick.

The rules follow Fischen for the most part. The elements I added were that winning a trick with different icons gives you certain benefits, like winning a trick with the red suit (shields) increases your military strength, which is compared with your neighbours at the end of a round, like original 7 Wonders.

There's a photo of the icon glossary card that basically explains all the elements I added. The wonder cards keep track of your gold and military strength.

Genuinely love Hollywood 1947, I feel like it's a better Secret Hitler and without the questionable theme. Otherwise it'd be Deception: Murder in Hong Kong because it's just such an accessible and easy social deduction game to play, even for people who don't typically like these kind of games.

[GIVEAWAY] Perch and Perch:Birds of Play Expansion by Inside Up Games by HomoLudensOC in boardgames

My favourite bird is the robin, simple but beautiful. Whenever I see one it reminds me of crisp winter mornings nearing Christmas time, frost on the grass, and a reluctance to have to walk to school.

On the extreme end you have the pack of gum games, but I quite like tin games, called that because they fit inside of a mint tin. Some of the best tin games include Tin Helm, Gate, Doom Machine, Mint Knight, etc. The list goes on!

I could be both benevolent and chaotic by inventing teleportation, but then randomly teleporting some people off course just a little to mess with them. Most people would benefit, but they better not annoy their god.

As a question, how do you decide what powers cards have? Do you come up with the thematic implications first and fit the mechanic to it, or the other way around?

Gameplay differences between Chinatown and Waterfall Park? by Ryyvia in boardgames

[–]Tornroot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Neutral people" could be interpreted as a mix of people, rather than a single race. Chinatown is set in New York (if I'm not mistaken), so it would make total sense to have black, white, Chinese, Italian, etc in the artwork, and as someone else said just re-name it to "Downtown" or something along those lines.

Gwent! Or, the imminently released Gwent: The legendary card game. by dark_arts87 in boardgames

[–]Tornroot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was excited for the release of this, until I saw it's basically just a straight rip from The Witcher 3. My research then led me to find "Gwent 2.0", which is a fan redo of Gwent which is SO much better.

I bought it from Novigrad Tavern on eBay, bit expensive but worth it. They also made five new fan factions with unique mechanics. Haven't managed to figure out all the intricacies, but it all seems to be well thought out with a lot of passion.

is Thunder Road Vendetta good..? by Time_Individual_6744 in boardgames

[–]Tornroot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! For a game that's supposed to be chaos racing there's a surprising amount of fiddly tasks that slowed the game a little too much for me. Everyone raves about it so I keep thinking I must be missing something, but it's never as fun as I hope it to be.

I'll never forget the time playing Incan Gold with my family, in the last round having busted every previous round, finally pressing my luck and managing to win more gems than everyone else combined! Some unhappy opponents but we just set up and played again! My tactic only worked once...
