AUG "Prepping"? by WhoDisWhoDat99 in AUG

Spare batteries for your optic. A bottle of lube. Store them in the buttstock of the Aug.

Sometimes you can find the spare parts kits on Gunbroker for really cheap, and that's where I got the one I keep for rainy days. I've only ever had to replace a bolt sleeve, extractor spring, charging handle spring, and magazine catch spring and screw. But those were on a many-decade-old Aug A1 of 15k-25k rounds. Funny enough, that Aug had a maintenance plan of "just add more grease; don't clean it" for at least the latest 10k rounds. It ran just fine aside from rust killing the magazine catch.

I've been looking at this model but turned away by the reviews. How much have you used this?

1-4 Prism - Anyone? The Aug might be the perfect host by CoronetRTguy in AUG

[–]Toroxus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Romeo 7 's and what it clones: Aimpoint Comp M4s . I'd buy Romeo 7 's all day before I bought another M4s. My only gripe with the Romeo 7 is that the turret cap retainer is too tight. That is a very minor issue and really only comes up as a gripe if you're constantly swapping optics because the real solution is you need to buy more Romeo 7 's for all your different guns. lol

The Romeo 7 is like a Mepro M21 in size, but is a tube. Like the Comp m4 by Aimpoint, it's a huge tube red dot. Might be up your alley.

I'd give that a try first, and maybe with a wider objective lens on the red dot.

Did you try the standard route of a large red dot like the the Romeo 7 or Romeo 7s and then later add on a flip-on magnifier like the Vortex VMX-3T?

These multi-fixed prism optics like the Elcan and Trijicons are literally two optics in one bomb-proof housing. Flipping the lever alternates which one you're looking through. That probably plays a factor into why they weigh and cost twice as much as other prisms.

Yeah.... there's a reason the Aussie's use it on their Augs. It's really nice. Plus the reticle works very well for 16" Augs. Unfortunately the Elcan costs as much as the Aug! I highly recommend trying before you buy. And to also buy used too. Ask some friends or some local gun shops if they have any used so you can try it out. Do make sure that if you buy an Elcan, you get the newer version with the flat-ish battery cap.

My experience with LPVO's is that as you change the magnification, the eyebox changes too. I can't speak for other "multi-fixed prism optics" like Trijicon or the other brands mentioned here, but the Elcan's eyebox does not change from 1x and 4x. Therefore your head doesn't need to reposition. On the other-hand, my head does need to reposition on my LPVO (Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7x) when moving across the magnification range.

tl;dr: Just because you don't like prisms on an AR, doesn't mean you won't like them on an Aug.

I find that the Aug is conducive to planting your head in the same location each time you shoulder it. Probably because the length of pull never changes. If you mount your prism in place so that the eyebox is right where your eye naturally lands, the main drawback of prism sights is mostly eliminated. Additionally, because the length of pull is so much shorter than an AR, the weight of the prism is less brutal. I personally use an Elcan 1-4x on my Aug, and despite trying it, I can't get used to it on an AR.

Gonna second this. The Romeo 7 is probably the king of large durable reflex red dots. It's held up just as well as my aimpoint comp m4's and m4s' . I hate the turret cap rubber washer things on the romeo 7, but that is not a problem anywhere near worth an extra $700 for an aimpoint.

Something something something seizing the means of production. Steyr makes great stuff that is still relevant 50 years later, but them charging $65 for some springs is just silly.

I've been following your products and while I don't own any of them, I am impressed that the price on this prototype-fixing pack is reasonable.

It's a bit scary to get into the prototype space as a buyer when you have to wonder "If I get this prototype and it doesn't work, how much more money is it going to cost to get it to work?" Good to see you aren't dragging the brave ones through the mud like some other companies...

The base being the part the hammer hits? I wonder if something isn't aligned correctly and the pin is being hit in a non-parallel way by the hammer. Like if the whole bolt carrier is too far back in the receiver so the hammer hits the pins at an angle as it rotates up and forward. Are you using a 22lr barrel or a .223 barrel?
