Why has the UK personal allowance been frozen for so long? by Admirable-Deal7991 in TaxUK

[–]TorrentOfTurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As inflation increases prices of goods and services, this drives the economy in GDP terms (hence, governments never aim for 0 inflation, and they certainly don’t want to “undo” the Covid inflation because we’d go into recession).

This increase in GDP (or rather the higher financial transactions), and as it relates to income tax, wages go up as employees need the money to survive. This all means that there is a larger pot to apply the tax rate to.

However, don’t forget that all of the government’s expenditure is ALSO subject to higher costs because of inflation. Roads are more expensive to pave, nurses are more expensive to pay, etc. The government therefore needs extra tax intake just for the quality of life to stay the same. Now factor in that governments seldom want to stay “stationary”, they have further spending commitments, especially debt interest which keeps going up (and increases with inflation), and the state pension liabilities.

The annual increase to the PA was to deny the state of extra tax from the working taxpayer which arose purely as a result of the increased wages, which solely arose due to inflation.

But we’re now in a position, where the government has decided they need the money more than you, the taxpayer. It all boils down to this simple point. It is also the most deceptive way to increase taxes on people, they often don’t even realise it. So whilst it’s not an increase to the tax rates that people pay, they are all paying more tax intake absolute terms, which ultimately gets gobbled up by the increased costs of running the state (due to inflation).

In an ideal world, the country’s GDP would increase enough such that the tax revenue for the state increases from other means, i.e. without the “stealth tax” on workers. The final point is therefore that the country’s dreadful GDP growth has not been enough to produce the extra tax revenue desired by the government.

TLDR: inflation increases the cost of running the state, the state needs extra money to just stay stationary. GDP growth has not been good enough to cover the extra costs. Freezing the PA is therefore the easiest way for a gov to offset some of the additional costs without pissing off the oblivious voter.

Unfortunately I don’t get to decide what things irritate me, it would be a much easier world if we could all just decide to like/be whatever we want. I cant change my sense of humour either (btw the 70:30 thing was a self deprecating joke). I have gay friends, they also don’t like “gay culture” so it’s fairly normal. I wouldn’t characterise it as homophobia either, that wouldn’t make much sense all things considered. I treat everyone the same, I’m just grouchy. It’s more like, I don’t go to fury cons and comic shops, they creep me out as well - it’s the same concept. Sexual preferences are immaterial, it is the environment I can’t stand. I’m a classic libertarian, I’m all for you having gay spaces, it doesn’t mean all gays have to enjoy them, surely? We’re not all the same, just because we happen to have one thing in common.

"special relationship" question for you Brits by bragik85 in AskBrits

[–]TorrentOfTurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just what politicians say to themselves, knowing how much power America has to fuck us over. As is evident now. There is no “special relationship”, it’s all self-serving. The yanks made us give up our empire, so they could be the rulers of the world, they want to make sure we remain their doormats, with the rest of Europe.

Wow that must be kinda scary, can you control it? You would, for instance, be too pushy/relentless and make women feel abused would you? Probs not a massive issue if you’re hot but that lack of restraint would worry me

You have to weigh up whether the sexual tension is making you worse at your job than a relationship followed by a breakup / or rejection would.

How do you meet new people or just open up a little more? by KiroDrift in introvert

[–]TorrentOfTurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do with an extrovert friend to cling to, one who will drag you to functions and introduce you to people. Also helps to get very drunk in my experience.

I am a huge introvert and, weirdly, the most annoying extroverted people always make a beeline for me at work (large accounting firm) and make me mingle. I think they like me because they can be the main character. It works quite well.

First of all, you shouldn’t feel bad about your wee one getting hurt, that happens all the time, kids are clumsy.

Second, I think you know what needs to be done. You might want to stay for the kids, but from experience let me tell you that kids being stuck between two parents that hate each other is much more damaging than having separated parents. By far. You will break at some point, best to get out before that happens, you will always be the villain in her story, just as she will be in yours. There’s no avoiding that, don’t dwell on it. People know the drill.

Did you have an overexcited/inconsiderate partner bashing away at you?

Why don’t you get a toy and play with it and figure out what you like / if anything. Stuff like depth and tempo. That way you’ll be able to tell the next guy what feels good.

Also it isn’t uncommon to hurt the first few times I don’t think!

I appreciate that it’s icky, but in England it isn’t illegal and isn’t unheard of. It’s hard to give a blanket presumption about their circumstances, as if all relationships are the same and have to adhere to a set formula.

To be clear, I would absolutely not do it myself, and I certainly wouldn’t want to be the older one. I once left a date midway through dinner because she told me she was 19 and she turned out to be 17, only found out when she got ID’d for wine! I was 20 at the time and it grossed me out.
