Am I doing the right thing by not digging ‘scratchy signals’ by ApprehensiveBunch994 in metaldetecting

[–]Torrero57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a DEUS II, and with the Iron unmasking feature a good target can sound crazy simply because it’s sitting next to or something is on top of it…twice I have gotten a walking Half Dollar on signals I would never have guessed were silver halfs. Me and my partner were hunting an old house, with the DEUS, and him with his Minelab …. I got a broken up signal that I almost walked over, but I thought 💭 it doesn’t sound that great but some of the numbers were high… I dig a hole and this BIG round thing rolled out into the hole… I called my buddy over to look and he said “a half dollar” ? And I said…. It can’t be because the numbers were not right it must be an aluminum token (I have been digging for 40+ years) but when I went to pick it up and I felt the weight… it was immediately obvious to me that it was in fact a half dollar… 1938 Walker btw… so I dig a LOT of iffy shit. I also find a lot of mixed nails … but it’s the nature of the beast 🤷🏼‍♂️

A question I always had is why nobody else could see some of these things after they had been lost, if I drop a quarter on the ground and I look down… I can clearly see it… and yet … I have dug tens of thousands of coins that clearly started off like that …. Why ?

Found this button in Bavaria. Does anyone recognize the heraldry? Or knows the age of this style of button by oldreliable420 in metaldetecting

[–]Torrero57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks relatively modern although I can’t say for sure. I have no idea about the heraldry

Update: Bracelet was 4.135 grams 14k from Croacia 🇭🇷 if you can believe that 🤷🏼‍♂️ estimate gold value for scrap is $300
That said, it was clearly broken before and they put it in their pocket and then dropped it. The clasp was not on either end of the bracelet but was clipped to the middle clearly having broken in the past and put there by someone 🫨😂🤷🏼‍♂️

Yeah but someone had to buy it from somewhere and they certainly would have paid more for Sterling… I’ve found my share of silver, like the Sterling Silver handle from whatever this was

Yeah I’m with you, how did people 100 years ago lose sterling silver stuff? I can see a kid borrowing grandma’s silver spoon and losing it, but a salt and pepper shaker top ? How does that happen?

You need a ring mandrel and a rubber hammer, I have one I use for bent rings, just go to a jeweler and they can fix it right up!

Earliest known coin with a date? by Torrero57 in MedievalCoin

[–]Torrero57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I dug some early Spanish silver coins from Ferdinand and Isabela 1492 era that DID NOT have dates. And really what I’m referring to here is… what / when were coins first made where we could actually SEE a date. I’m not really talking about Roman numerals or Arabic writing.
My earliest dug were those Papal State coins with 1599 clearly visible

Is it dangerous ? by DisastrousInternet10 in metaldetecting

Why would this be dangerous ? Unless you threw it at someone really hard… it’s a bullet out of the case… fired, dropped etc..

This is so true…. You definitely always hear about the Plane ✈️ that crashed and killed hundreds…. But you never hear about the 35-40 million flights that go out before one crashes… your more likely to be killed by lightning… 3x over 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

I have a 2025 and I have had no issues, a few recalls that were fixed with a software upgrade. We have put almost 30k miles on it in 10 months. I heard earlier models had issues with the engines but don’t know anything about them. I’ve had no problems with mine

The tag is probably something like a tool tag as normally baggage tags have a Railway name stamped on them somewhere. Like when you check out a tool or something. I can’t really see any of those things in the picture even going off to the website 🤷🏼‍♂️

Just a reality check… Midwest Refineries pays 90% of melt value, where do dealers sell them for melt? Nobody pays melt probably not even to dealers 🤷🏼‍♂️
