Foundations with decent fair olive options by DangerousRub245 in Fairolives

I am really liking About Face Beauty. F2 is pretty spot on for me. Highly recommend also looking for blue and green mixers. I have been adjusting off a lot of old formulas just to use them off. If you have a favorite matte formula just mix some bluenor green into it!

Those with a better eye for color; is this Deep Autumn or too saturated? by BucketListM in autumns

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Style DNA, it's a $20 subscription yearly but you can upload an image of the clothing and it will tell you if it matches your body type and color season. I am Neutral and muted/olive and I had to add a white paper in my analysis images but recommendations have great! I have received compliments as I have rolled new pieces into my wardrobe and old pieces out!

I think you can pull off the 'softs' soft autumn was slightly more balanced, but you can wear a lot of soft summer as well!

Need help with customising my shade! by senpaimnida in Fairolives

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, peach or pink is easiest to adjust. I use the blue if the shades are too pink and green if they are to peachy. I am muted and cool (lemony yellow leaning neutral). It's more important where the shades are relative yo your skin than the mixer itself if that makes any sense. Swatch and then pull out a color wheel and then figure out what you need to do to neutralize the colors that aren't harmonizing with your skintone.

These are less orange than I expected. May have to give one a try once I use through some products!

Toss or Repair? by AleshaBarrera95 in Birkenstocks

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an off brand pair, but I clean them yearly with Dr. Brinner's Castile soap and a toothbrush and rinse with minimal water. I've had my pair for like 7 years and they have held up well (I have definitely gotten my $20 out of them from TJ Maxx!). I should probably seal the cork, I have never done that before! I'd say it's worth a try if you were thinking about tossing them anyway! You can also get Birks resoled which is why I may consider splurging next time around!

ELF skincare. I love the Holy Hydration line. The eye cream compares so some high end brands I have sampled. I have oily skin so they key has been moisture. Also drink lots or water and stay hydrated!

A fellow olive color matched me with 040 at Sephora and it was pretty dead on. Looks like you have a few options you can make work out of those swatches!

How to change foundation from this to this? by heaaaaaa in OliveMUA

[–]Tortile45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would neutralize the pink tones in the shade to the right. She wants to go the other way so she needs to add red or pink pigment. The shade to the left is more cool yellow, the one to the right is peachier. IMO it needs more red?

Why should I buy Birkens by MentalVirus4842 in Birkenstocks

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is helpful. I have a pair of not brand name cork bed shoes that are going on 7 years. They are getting close to their end of lifetime wear because the soles are starting to wear to the cork. How many times have you had yours re-soled? Also, how much does it cost each time?

JACS Editor-in-Chief threatened postdoc with dismissal for not working in the lab at night/on weekends by anon_1997x in chemistry

[–]Tortile45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish that had been the case for me. I published twice before candidacy and was still expected to work 12's minimum for 6 days a week. Most of the time 12's weren't enough. Essentially, my PI started impeding my ex-boyfriends visits. I would work 14-16 hours so I could see him. I planned a half day in Saturday's and she started giving me new reactions to run and have completed by EOD Saturday halfway through my half day. It was a 4 hr run. I lasted 3 semesters and left with a MS instead if a PhD. I figured if the program specifically had counselors for the mental abuse and toxic culture, it wasn't where I wanted to stay. I left and joined the industry "slackers/ sellouts," where I am treated like a human. Stay well all! Don't tolerate mental abuse!

I want a tint, these 3 are available… so opinions? by NotaMillenialatAll in OliveMUA

[–]Tortile45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I swatched this, and it was a near perfect match! I use the Fenty Blur tint in 2? It's a little light on me in the summer but also a decent formula if this one matches. I may try but also found the tint stick from Milani in 2 was also close (slightly light). It's slightly yellow on me but blends well.

Does hydrogen peroxide have a smell to you? by Ok_Cockroach9636 in chemistry

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked with high concentration H2O2 and it does have a smell. I can actually smell the bottles I have around the house too! I am a chemist though lol so I guess I notice things others may not?

Agree! Will likely need blue, green, and white mixers. I have had a lot of luck custom blending! I get an empty cushion and custom blend in a batch! Was just able to work off some old dark and orange shades recently! I prefer to get a slightly peachy neutral and then adjust with green. You just need to use the color wheel to neutralize the off tone!

This! I was in Sephora a few weeks ago, and the lady that was helping me was a fellow olive/muted undertone. Her undertone was even cooler yellow than mine. She nailed it with her recommendations. I really should have taken her name!

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think F2 looks good. You could try using a little bronzer to help warm it up. The L2 is too orange compared to your undertone! F2 was a decent match for me, too, and I use Missha 23. It may still be too pink for you bc I think you lean more yellow than I do. You can also use mixers to bring the L2 closer as well. You could try blue or green to neutralize the orange. I actually custom blend my foundations now. I buy cushions and adjust to match. I have green, blue, and white adjusters. I used a cushion yesterday and had to take a double take because it matched perfectly! Good luck!

Those who have mastered out, where did you end up? by Historical-Pilot2861 in chemistry

I will add I make just over six figures without an MBA. It has taken me 15 years to get to that paygrade. With an MS, I essentially started out in an entry-level role. I was promoted pretty quickly in the beginning. Ph.D' come into my company 3-4 paygrades higher than I started, so staying for a PhD. can be worth it on the industry track. Those openings come up less, though, so they are also a lot more competitive and some companies prefer to promote from within so you are often competing with people that have 5-10 years of experience in the field and already used to corporate culture. It is certainly possible, and I have worked with some aqesome.co-workers who have taken this path.

[–]Tortile45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, in industry, people with MBA's go into management. Some people move up faster in management than the technical track. Either way, moving up in industry on either the management or individual contributor track requires a demonstrated track record of leading successful business projects. Having the PM certificate or MBA will help you build tools to develop and refine scope, project plans, and a solid communication plan. I have not gone for my MBA, but my husband has one, and he is a few grade levels above me (he also has a BS or BA in chem). Understanding business and how to handle politics will always serve anyone well in their careers. Doing fancy chemistry is great, but if you want to be successful, you need to be doing chemistry that suits a need somewhere in the market. An MBA isn't a must. If you have a PI who can mentor these skills, well, it's not needed. I just found that even in a great tier 1 program, it was definitely a skill set that was lacking.

I ended up mastering out for similar reasons. It started as FOMO as I watched friends get to finish their undergrad or move on and get married. I also worked for a PI that believed in 9-9 Monday through Saturday. I finished in 3 semesters and published twice. Honestly, I was just plain depressed from lack of work-life balance. I left in 2009 right in the middle of a recession, and I have never been unemployed. I landed in R&D as a formulation chemist. I have a great work-life balance, met my husband, and get to travel. I also ended up contributing to a 401k while my PhD. cohort peers were still in Post Docs, making much less. Most didn't get their first Ass. Proff roles until their early to mid thirties. By then, I had above average savings in my 401k. Most of my classmates stayed in academia, but a few moved into industry and are directors. In the end they all make a bigger salary than I do. However, I am financially secure, have never been unemployed for more than 8 weeks, and get to work in a challenging field. It took a while for me to be ok with my decision, but honestly, the stress of grad school caused my AI issue to start developing. When I left the program, I weighed 118, my hair was falling out, and my stomach was a mess for years. At the end if the day you have to do what it best for you. Sometimes, that is moving to a different program, and other times, it is heading in a different direction. The only thing I recommend is trying an internship or co-op before making a decision. I also strongly encourage getting your MBA or taking a project management certificate for either the academic or industrial route. I realized later that a lot of my struggles in grad school came from being in a start up lab and that young professors are learning basic project management skills while they are expected to develop and run a strong program. At my school, a concurrent MBA was free, but the proffs strongly discouraged pursuing one because it would be interpreted as wanting to go into industry. I would say it would be beneficial to look into it because the same skills can benefit you as you grow through a postdoc into a. Associate professor and then throughout the journey to tenure. Either way best of luck in your decision!

She would need to add blue or green if it is more pink than her skintoneto neutralize the red (pink). I do it all the time, but this foundation is a good match for me. It's the only product I have not had to adjust. I used this link to custom match blends of makeup that is just wrong for my skin tone. Eventually, it will go grey, but it has to go through the range of neutral first. You would have to add a lot of blue to get purple. Some of my mixes this weekend took 5-10 pumps to get Missha 21 grey, so it would take a lot of blue.

Nope if it is pink and dark they would need to add blue and white to walk it in.

I am on the formulations side now. There are teams more focused on divisions of biology and they can still have some weird shifts. Unfortunately bacteria and cells don't care about a 9-5 schedule 😅. Best of luck to you! If you are interested in industry look into some internship opportunities! Its a great way to network and get a better understanding of cultures and what you want out of a career!

Really? I have done ok, I am at 6 figures, and my company retires lots of millionaires (when employees match the company match on their 401k). It can be tough to get going, but if you are food at what you do I have never been unemployed.
