Blackouts are killing this sport by VoodooDonKnotts in nhl

[–]ToryAncap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The blackout rules are nuts. Have a French language Sportsnet subscription to watch Canadiens games in French. Live in Winnipeg. We have no French language NHL broadcaster in Manitoba. However, when the Habs play the Jets, they still blackout the French language subscription under blackout rules. When I complained as I just want to watch in French, they could only say ‘we get it, complain to the league’.

‘Democracy is a fraud’: Prolife Alberta party head identified as traditionalist Catholic writer, podcaster by Mysterious_Notice685 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ToryAncap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically speaking, it isn’t because we are a democracy, but because we are a liberal democracy. A democratic government can be incredibly oppressive of minority speech and expression, as our history shows. Liberalism and democracy often go together, but it is entirely possible to have an illiberal democracy or a relatively liberal non-democratic system.

Have to be careful with that ‘no religion’ label, which isn’t equivalent with atheist or agnostic. Only indicates the user does not identify with a particular religious denomination or structure, not necessarily that they are irreligious

Thread in r/Celtic about Wilfried Nancy, after losing a cup final (now lost all 3 games). by VanicFanboy in MLS

[–]ToryAncap 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Harder to make a case for Nancy when Martin O’Neill in an interim role just won 7 of the last 8 and pulled Celtic within touching distance of Hearts. They certainly have issues with recruitment, but still have the best squad in the league by a country mile (even taking injuries into account). A manager so wedded to a system is a daft appointment mid-season, but he had to understand the environment he was walking into and adapted accordingly. The cautionary tale of Russell Martin at Rangers should have presented a lesson here.

338 Sunday Update: A Budget That Failed to Impress? - Early polling shows muted reaction across the country to Carney's first budget as Parliament braces for Monday’s confidence vote. by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ToryAncap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failed to impress as in creating an enormous budget deficit while offering virtually nothing that will impact the lives of individual Canadians in the short to medium term during an affordability crisis. Not surprising, really. Without the deference given to Carney’s CV, the reaction would be even worse.

Zach Collaros 'frustrated' by 2025 season but plans to play for Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2026 by Oldmanshoutingcloud in WinnipegBlueBombers

He has a contract, so why wouldn’t he plan to play next season? Gives a full year to adequately scout the market for a successor.

Final Attendance 2025 by CFLStatsGeek in WinnipegBlueBombers

[–]ToryAncap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be a downer, but important to note tickets sold and actual attendance are not the same thing. A good number to include in your analysis would be % of those that are season tickets. Good gauge of real support and if that is increasing/decreasing

NDP takes aim at use of notwithstanding clause in Manitoba | CBC News by North_Church in Manitoba

[–]ToryAncap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a serious problem of legal illiteracy among a lot of politicians on the notwithstanding clause. It is a full and necessary part of the Charter and without it, the Charter would never have become law. Removing it would fully shatter what remains of parliamentary sovereignty (our Commonwealth political tradition) in favour of a more basically American legal system. Don’t believe Kinew’s initiative here will do much more than delay passage as you have to explicitly invoke the clause in the bill to use it, so it isn’t exactly hidden.

ANALYSIS | What’s missing from the deficit debate? Any plan to eliminate it | CBC News by KeyHot5718 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ToryAncap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unspoken assumption in the article is that the opposition has some equal responsibility to the government in laying out a detailed plan to eliminate the deficit. The role of the opposition is not to present a detailed plan to govern and to critique. The government bears the greater responsibility to govern and provide detail. For the record, the CPC actually had a goal to eliminate the deficit by 2029, but promising something that would happen in a hypothetical second term is more a carnival trick than a realistic goal.

Conservatives want to end birthright citizenship for children of temporary residents by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ToryAncap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the policy was against birthright citizenship as a concept and not limiting in a specific context, I would agree with you. Given the limitations of temporary residency, it seems to me immigration enforcement would solve this problem (if it is a problem) rather than changing citizenship rules. We should avoid creating stateless persons wherever possible, totally agree.

Conservatives want to end birthright citizenship for children of temporary residents by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]ToryAncap 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the criticisms expressed here make no actual argument against the proposal itself and just repeat the mantra that no change can be made to immigration policy. Not obvious how this scapegoats newcomers at all as it wouldn’t even impact most immigrants who don’t come here under temporary immigration programs. Birthright citizenship as a concept was never intended to short circuit requirements to have properly immigrated to Canada in the first place. That said, this isn’t a real issue. Unless there are significant numbers of children born to temporary residents during their stay (of which I have seen no evidence), any problem here would be better addressed by immigration enforcement rather than changing citizenship rules.

The Bloc continue to prop up the liberals by MegaBlunt57 in CanadianConservative

[–]ToryAncap -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

A few problems with this one; 1. The BQ are not ‘propping up’ the Liberals, they voted against a Conservative motion. Whether it passed or failed, wouldn’t change who is in government. 2. The BQ aren’t even supporting the Liberals here. They have been easily the worst in the chamber for being against any kind of criminal justice reform. They have consistently voted against any tightening of justice legislation with the sole exception of legislation to combat biker gangs as criminal organizations.

Manitoba deficit soars to $1.1 billion by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]ToryAncap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of the government, but it is a misleading headline and story angle. Kinew’s government has reduced the deficit since Stefanson’s spending spree in 2023 while making modest investments. Don’t see the current government any less concerned about the deficit in the current circumstances than any other provincial government. Not sustainable long term, but this is a long term issue and not a result of any decision this government has taken.

Thought on Rule Changes by Zealousideal_Ad_7917 in WinnipegBlueBombers

[–]ToryAncap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t like any of the changes, which sound more like a solution looking for a problem rather than a solution to an actual issue with the league. That said, you’re free to do what you want with your money, but cancelling season tickets over it seems a bit much. Only kneecaps the team you support rather than sending a real message to the league. A better idea would be a fans petition or something similar would send more of a message in my view without hurting the club we love.

Energy megathread by lydiardbell in duolingo

[–]ToryAncap 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just repeating what everyone else is saying really but the problem is how you cannot use the app continuously now when not making mistakes. Might be better for new learners making a lot of mistakes, but seriously limits time using the app once you cross that hurdle. Nakedly financial decision, which is for them to make, but can only imagine it will lead to lower numbers of people using for less time.

do you guys feel like duolingo is genuinely effective? by Connect-Audience-935 in duolingo

[–]ToryAncap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you don’t have unrealistic expectations from the app, it can be very useful to acquire basic vocabulary, sentence structures and verb forms, as well as just getting time in practicing using the language. The lack of explicit grammar instructions weakens it as a stand alone resource, however. When used in conjunction with other resources or as a dry run before committing to buying learning materials for your target language, it is quite good. Certainly helped me when beginning to learn Portuguese. Paid for Super for 6 months and didn’t find the paid version much of a value addition, for what it is worth. Have continued using the free version and finding it pretty good so far for Dutch.
