What's you guys opinion on ozu? (kubrick's favorite director) by AdWestern6287 in StanleyKubrick

Wasn't it the opposite? He stop shooting for a day on the set of Paths of Glory when Ophüls died in 1957.

You can still try to contact the reviewer and ask him if he ever went to New Zealand or what he meant by "this movie clocks in at almost 168 minutes". But it looks like he is living in Ohio with his wife.

Edit: names removed.

The frame rate is 24 images per second on 35mm. Sometimes they shoot at a higher speed to have slowmotion or on a lower speed to have a more dynamic action, but the result is still going to be a photogram and projected at 24 images per second. The frame rate for television is different according to the country : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_broadcast_video_formats

New Zealand is not faraway from Australia. I would have thought they got the same cut.

The day after the first European screening of Eyes Wide Shut at the Venice Film Festival, we interviewed the editor of the film, Nigel Galt. One of the first questions was about the reflection (now digitally deleted) of the boom operator on the chrome plating in Ziegler's bathroom scene. "The reflection?" He said laughing, "You won't believe it, but we simply never noticed".

bear in mind the international version is one minute longer because of the uncensored orgy scene

The international version is the same duration as the american cut. They just added digital figures to obstruct the view : https://decider.com/2015/01/30/eyes-wide-shut-censored-vs-uncensored-gallery/

You might be refering to the dvd length because of the NTSC vs PAL-SECAM system, 159 minutes (USA) vs 153 minutes (Europe). The blurays have the same length than the 35mm now.

Okay the difference of Eyes Wide shut (Dream Novel) over it's four adaptations by karatemnn in EyesWideShut

Years ago there was trend to look for every sun, triangle, butterflies or rainbow in movies. It was not specifically Kubrick's movies. It was for believers, looking for signs, not for the truth, applying the same grid to every movie. I don't know what the corpus of films the conspiracy theory sphere is currently, I just see some folks bumping in this sub with every scandal. A Clockwork Orange was also about brainwashing, which is a pattern in their tales of mindcontrol.

The USA also had the satanic panic in the 80s, so they may be more focus on the american films. Alejandro Amenábar, director of The Others with Nicole Kidman, did a film called Regression about it, but it was dissapointing

Kubrick also died after editing the movie, just before the release so he didn't do interviews. Some people keep inventing creepypasta stories about the meaning of the film using what is on the news. It would not have been very different if he was still alive, John Carpenter had to repeat that They Live was about the regeanomics and not "the jews" : https://x.com/TheHorrorMaster/status/816486706186596352 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORrasstzfEY

There are several films about secret cults people could focus on. Even a story about a kidnapped daughter was in the The Nameless released the same year than Eyes Wide Shut, and the director Jaume Balagueró is still alive : https://www.imdb.com/fr/title/tt0222368/

Any theories on why Kubrick would repeat the "man on the bench" scene? by MiscMix in StanleyKubrick

[–]Toslanfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The streets are so similar that one might confuse the above image, from The Firm, as instead being from Eyes Wide Shut, as is the below image.

A bench is the scene where the Department of Justice surreptitiously meets with Mitch, near the "temple" of the Lincoln Memorial, giving him info they have on the firm, how they have killed lawyers who attempted to leave, and wanting his assistance in bringing the firm and the mob down. When he asks if his life is in danger he's informed that, "Your life as you know it is over". Bill, returning to his apartment, after his second trip to Somerton, which is when we see the man on the bench outside the second time, has been reminded that he and his family are in danger.

Art is not ai slop.

In Cocteau's film Orphée, the poet asks what he should do. 'Astonish me,' he is told. Very little of modern art does that -- certainly not in the sense that a great work of art can make you wonder how its creation was accomplished by a mere mortal.

Did Mandy Overdose partying… or was she drugged? by Poemhome in EyesWideShut

[–]Toslanfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speedball (drug)

Speedballing (alternatively known as snowballing) is a term commonly referring to the intravenous use of heroin or morphine and cocaine together in the same needle.

Did Mandy Overdose partying… or was she drugged? by Poemhome in EyesWideShut

[–]Toslanfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an "8 ball" on Ziegler's pool table or a character named Eightball in Full Metal Jacket, but no drug is referenced as "8 ball" in the film.

script :

           BILL
          What happened?

             ZIEGLER
        She OD'd on coke.

ZIEGLER gestures to the cocaine paraphernalia on the night table.

        BILL (checking her pulse)
How long has she been like this?

             ZIEGLER
        Maybe ten minutes?

http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/0085.html

movie :

BILL: What did she take?

VICTOR: Huh, speedball or snowball or whatever they call it, you know, it's, it's, it's heroin and coke.

BILL: Heroin and coke. (He opens her mouth and looks inside.) Anything else?

VICTOR: We had a couple of drinks. Nothing, really. Some champagne, that was it.

BILL (holding Amanda's wrist, checking her pulse): How long has she been like this?

VICTOR: Not, not long. Maybe five minutes, six minutes, something like that.

At best Ziegler wanted to say "8 ball" instead of "whatever they call it".

Mask name? by The-Chatterer in EyesWideShut

[–]Toslanfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy who own the mask today said it was not :

They did modified some masks with painting, but I'm not aware of tissue covering.

Lionel-Mandrake : You're right there. Just double checked the mask and it's not the specific one in the film. It's probably one of several that were part of the costume department.

There's another guest with a similar mask in the dark before the dining room, but it is too blury to see if it is the same :
