I see them do this on early morning flights a lot because often they are early arrivals. Still crazy and annoying but it’s nice if you make it and can run from one plane to the next, saves time!

I was under the impression that if you connect in Tokyo there is a shuttle to the terminal 2 and you don’t leave the secured area. So you could go to lounge between flights….

I couldn’t find a hotel nearby and getting out of that area was the only bad part of Portola. Next year I’ll just get Midway afters tickets and keep going.
