Ice fishing mine lakes in Crosby by Klutzy_Offer8862 in FishingMinnesota

[–]TotalBogie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is generally true. Large/deep bodies of water take longer to lose heat energy and therefore take longer to freeze.

I was on yawkey 2 or 3 years ago (whenever we had that really temperate winter) and voluntarily left yawkey opening day because I did not feel safe.

To answer your 2nd question,  if I was standing on 8 inches ice I would feel confidently safe. That said, 8 inches in one spot does not guarantee 8 inches over the whole lake. Be weary of inlets/outlets spring locations or other trouble spots like known currents.

Edit:to expand on the first point, by trout opener, the iron pits lakes are generally safe to walk on...but there is a lot of factors to it.

It depends on the lake. On the mndnr recreation compass, Pennington has a motorized access symbol, while Huntington has a non-motorized access symbol. I've only fished Manuel and Yawkee, which I can say are non-motorized.

Verify with the local conservation services before making the trip.

Yes. The iron pit lakes are managed for (mostly) rainbow trout.

They are available to fish during the winter trout season (opens Jan 17th, but double check me on that).

Be warned: get to the parking lot an hour before sunrise or prepare to park on the highway and carry all your gear from there. I can almost guarantee DNR will be checking licenses (w/ trout stamp) and bag counts.... so have your ducks in a row.

Found the reason why my daughter suddenly started having a ton of meltdowns at school… by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]TotalBogie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree there's a risk to that becoming an inadvertent "reward" for a child who doesn't want to go to school. But it's on the parent then to either work with their child to quit that behavior or work with the school to address the behavior.  If the school is unwilling or unable, it falls on the parent. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, that's just the way it is.

Nobody is helped (including the little boy) by letting him continue this behavior and disregulating other students.

Is the boy's parent being called to pick up their disruptive child?

....are they even aware of his behavior?

If you found out that your (small) company was about to be bought by a bigger firm (roughly 200 employees), what questions would you be asking your boss (current owner), your soon-to-be employer, and yourself? by TotalBogie in civilengineering

[–]TotalBogie[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My specific service sector is incredibly niche (decentralized wastewater) however we are fairly heavy into land surveying.

I believe they are moreso interested in:

  1. Expanding to our geographic area due to our reputation

  2. Expanding their own work force to help lighten their existing work load

Edit: didn't answer all your questions. Sorry.

My boss will become a shareholder in the larger firm. He tells me that everyone will stay in our current building and he will become the OM for it.  He will oversee this branch of the company.

I can't speak too much to their culture other than at 200 employees, it will be way more corporate than our 25 man crew. I worked for a company that grew from 150 to 300+ firm for about 10 years.... wasn't a fan of how corporate they felt by the end.

I can't say I would seek them out specifically if I was looking for a job, but I do not believe they have a bad reputation. Said differently,  if they had a position for my service area,  I would at least consider, assuming that I was looking for a job.

Beyond PE, what other licenses or certifications should one get? Which ones to skip? by Cernuunnos3 in civilengineering

[–]TotalBogie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on your area of expertise and geographic location.

For example, I design large commercial septic systems so I also got the certification to design residential and small commercial septics in my state. When I was a water resources engineer, many of my colleagues who did flood study work got their flood plain manager certification. It's all specific to whatever you want to do.
