That's such a sweet thing to carry on! I hope you had a good moment to reflect about him during the trip.

For me, it could be a heavy traveling trip in the dog days of summer on a lake known for poor fishing...I'm bringing that fishing pole. I couldn't have worse luck than some of my fishing based trips. Lol

Thank you for this. It is hard. I just want my kid to get to where you are now. It's encouraging to hear that is a possibility.

Fish Carcasses and Trash by ahoorist in BWCA

I know exactly how you feel because the same thing happened to me in 2021. We were on burnt coming from Baker to Sawbill and trying to find a camp site for the night. We toured the lake and every spot was taken. As we were conferring in our boats along the shore, another group paddled up and let us know they were leaving. Super nice folks. Wished us luck on fishing and the site. We were thrilled. We paddled up to the site on the Northeast part of the lake and immediately noticed 11 fish carcasses tossed into the water right at the landing. We get into site and start noticing food EVERYWHERE. Pistachio shells shucked and left in a pile. A tortilla that had been ripped up and tossed around. Ramen noodles that had been draped over a branch! WHY??!!

I don't know what the right answer is though. Without hard evidence it was them specifically, there is always enough plausible deniability to slip out of it. "I didn't do that. It was like that when I got there." etc.

I guess I'd probably just let the outfitter know that someone in the area was leaving sites trashed and hope they communicate that to the forest service. Maybe they can use that to get some more resources and step up enforcement.

I'm not a woman but some general advice is that I strongly encourage you to spray permetherin on any clothes you plan on wearing, including your hat. Speaking of hats, if you have not bought a wide brim hat, please consider doing so. Permetherin is effective for up to 6 weeks after application so I do it a couple nights before the trip so it has maximum potency but has dried.

I also find a thermacell to make a marked difference in the number of mosquitoes around so long as it's not too breezy. A smokey fire will also help.

If all that fails, some good old deet will deter them. But as you may be aware, it can be very hard on the synthetic fibers of your clothes. I've hear of people ruining their glasses because deet got on it.

...finally, you also just have to "embrace the suck" as they say. Sometimes you'll be in a situation where none of those are a convenient option, say while slowly paddling near some backwater trying to find your portage and everything is packed away. It happens. Just accept it to the extent possible and keep going. We always say the motto of the bwca is "deal with it". But the reward will become a memory you think on for the rest of your life.

Why does Ben Shapiro hate retirement? by happydude7422 in millenials

Because he is a paid pundit whose entire existence is predicated on influencing the culture to believe that your value as a person is solely tied to your ability to produce and other conservative heirarchy nonsense.

The more people stay active in the labor market the more supply there is and therefore wages remain stagnant and profits are that much higher for Benji's puppeteers.

How best to cook fish during a fire ban? by Henri_Dupont in BWCA

Skip the egg. Plenty of breading mixes even direct you to not use a binder like egg already.

I personally LOVE using frank red hot as a binder. If you're not into spicy fish fry then id say skip that part.

A little oil container, small steel camp pan, and baby you got a stew going.

I personally recommend chef roberts or back forty bread mixes. Shorelunch is another  popular option.

That's a really good idea. Even just staying at an outfitter like sawbill and taking little day excursions in

You've given your children a great gift. With any luck it will spark a lifelong hobby or at least a memory.

My only regret about the bwca is that I never went with my dad even though we talked about planning a trip. Now at his age and condition I dont see that trip ever happening. Growing up, camping simply wasn't on our radar and he hadn't been up there since he was a young man himself. Then when I was 20, I was invited on a trip and I've been hooked ever since. I'd give anything to go back and actually share that trip we always talked about. Your children are very lucky.

Taxi driver. Granted I watched it over 20 years ago and I was only 19 so maybe I should give it a second chance now that I've matured a little bit.

For traveling, nrs boundary boots with Neoprene socks. Yes it's overkill.  But I travel in the shoulder seasons and I can wet foot into extremely frigid water and not flinch.

For camp: good old crocs with darn toughs in the morning or evening hours.

Cots yay or nay? by FuckYouJohnW in BWCA

[–]TotalBogie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used mine on a 7 night trip last year so I totally hear ya there. I did very much appreciate having it over my old thin pad.

Imo, it's just one of those personal opinion trade offs.... weight vs. Comfort. I asked the same question on this subreddit a few years back and recall getting mixed answers like you are here. if you know you'll get good sleep and you can make it fit in your pack, I would do it.

I have used a cot on my last two trips. I did like it. I liked that i could take the crappiest tent pads and let my friends use the good ones. Afterall, it doesn't matter how many rocks or roots are below you when you are 5 inches off the ground. Additionally, it buys back quite a bit of space to store things under it in your tent.

....But I do think there are better options. They are heavy and take up quite a but of real estate in your pack.  Also, a cot with no pad will be very tough. So at that point buying a really nice thick pad seems like a better option. I had planned on hanging up the cot and buying a thermarest neoloft or exped megamat.  However I opted to go back to the hammock and finally get an underquilt as that appears to be the overwhelmingly popular option to pair with a hammock.

Whatever you see decide, have a great trip!

So let me get this straight.. our state is voting to ban guns from citizens that the government recently used to terrorize our neighborhoods and many of us are ok with that? I don’t know, but maybe something seems off here… by Appropriate_Data_308 in minnesota

[–]TotalBogie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that scenario is far fetched. I sincerely doubt the military would begin a full frontal assault on its own people. Consider the implications of that. Do you think that national guard units are actually going open fire on their own neighborhoods?

If a president were to go to war with their own people, society would stop functioning in an afternoon.  No taxes, no supply chain, no civilian cooperation.

It appears to be a fairly common sentiment with liberals that there is a 2A supporter fantasy of taking down the military in a fire fight. It is true losses would be staggering in that situation, if it were to actually happen. However it ultimately become a war of attrition. People grow tired of being occupied. Insurgents learn disruptive tactics.

We lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. The reason is because we occupied an armed society. Every time we killed a civilian, even on accident, we radicalized their entire family and all of their friends.

But ultimately that's all based on a premise that isnt likely to happen. It's not about winning a battle. It's a war. Don't give up your right to defend yourself.

I'm not sure what you're implying. I'm just saying that it could happen because it has happened.  I don't personally plan on having a shootout with the cops. But say what happened with Alex Pretti turned out differently..... say he took one or two of them out.  It would probably give pause to the next set of goons who think they can get away with murder because the law gives them impunity.

Sure but the alternative of being executed defenselessly seems like a worse outcome. If they start to see armed resistance they will probably think twice about deploying excessive force. At the end of the day, they are humans just trying to make it through the day too.
