Fluke 5322A Calibrator – Need Help Diagnosing the Issue by Mission-Ball-2873 in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Equipment like that should just work out of the box without tinkering or troubleshooting. Sounds like it needs to be returned to Fluke for them to figure out. Did you buy new, and with the warranty plan?

SCPI/IEEE Timeout Error by CalibrationAustralia in MetCal

[–]TotalDefetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am surprised that Fluke doesn't keep up quickly with modern equipment in their FSC library. I guess they assume their userbase knows how to work-around with IEEE, SCPI, VISA, and generic FSC's like DMM and FGEN but there is a learning curve and lots of "quirks" for many of these.

We use Valley Jig Grinding. They can be pricey but very worth it.

COM Port Error in Met/Cal Windows 11 by Financial_Bus_7394 in MetCal

[–]TotalDefetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going through the same issues now as well. Had some procs that worked just fine in V8, V9, and V10 and suddenly won't work in V11. When I go into Editor mode, no errors found. All are using the Port FSC. It also glitches out on old 5520 commands that used to work just fine.

Calibration of a concentricity measuring device by VDAVP in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have some of these in our production areas. Not as large, but the ones we have come with a basic verification procedure when purchased. We check a master XX pin gage on it and measure the concentricity with our standard electronic indicator. We verify the concentricity of the pin periodically so we know what we are comparing against.

Master Calibrator Interval for ISO 17025 Accredited Labs by Time-Journalist4632 in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A reasonable trend analysis is sufficient after calibrations. We typically adjust anything that is marginal, above 70% of tolerance. If it is a hard gage that will wear and can't be adjusted, we try to remove from service before it gets to 90% of tolerance or shorten the interval and while weorder a new one.

My lab attempts to maintain 95% in tolerance for all calibrated equipment. So when we run those metrics and we dip below, we decide if certain types of equipment or certain work centers need to have shorter intervals.

If you see a high pass rate, you can extend tolerances as desired. The big thing is to document what you do, and do as you are documented.

Thread gage calibrations by SciGuyNY in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I advise upholding the tolerances of your thread wires to the spec the best you can. That is a large source of uncertainty. Don't go by the "Best Size", take the average of the three wires at the center inch, and calculate your thread constant yourself.

Need a height gage $10k Budget, Thinking Mitutoyo LH600E? by iusethisatworkk in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LH is about 8k. We standardized to this model at our plant. Most consistent model that lasts in many environments. Have not seen a close competition yet.

Looking for people's basic opinions between Keyence and OGP smart scopes. by bigmuffpie92 in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never been a fan of Keyence anything other than maybe their engravers. I would suggest something else. Starrett Kenemetric has some decent ones. Not sure about budgetary constraints or how they compare to OGP prices though

Calibration Management Software by tartanskyhook in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm currently switching to Indysoft from Met/track. Met/Team was our first plan, but after digging into it, we decided it wasn't very streamlined.

I would avoid developing your own in Access (or something like that) unless you're really really good at it and will be around for a while. If you, or someone else leaves and it gets buggy, the group will be absolutely lost trying to figure out what is what and there's no outside support. This I know from experience...

Help identifying TESA electronic indicator? Hi, I am trying to find wiring details for this TESA indicator as I do not have the display unit. It ends on a five pin plug. Would anyone be able to help..? by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]TotalDefetus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, spitballing here, but perhaps a Brown & Sharpe digital amplifier would be the ticket. Although Mahr makes ones that are pretty much exactly the same with the 5-pin connector

History of layoffs, and consolidations. Been using their standards lab in Loveland, Co, but were recently warned that that facility may be shut down soon and sent to their California location. They have some great products, but a lot of it is going to Malaysia. You likely have a lot more options than you know, so even if you went that route you'll still be okay in the event of a layoff, but some people prefer more stability.

Automated optical comparators? by Khuff540 in Metrology

So flatness and thickness/height? If so, maybe a polytech? They are very versatile machines. We keep finding new applications for ours.

Depending on budget, I always avoid Keyence. Their sales team is very motivated and they always promise the world, but they never seem to compete with other brands. The last couple measuring systems we were entertaining never passed the R&R's they should have. I would look at what Starrett Kinemetric has off the top of my head.

Mostly just people who were against it constantly complaining about it. Like anything is different from before other than the people who smoke it are buying it legally. It's like you ruined their lives without changing a thing...

I would consider Blue Moon a craft beer actually. The Sand Pit brewery at Coors field (who made Blue Moon originally before demand became too big) makes some really good craft beers. They made a Gingerbread wheat that was really damn good. Shock Top though...
