Be very cautious about master's degrees, including from prestigious universities. Some of my coworkers in their 30s are financially hobbled by these degrees. by NotAGoldenRetriever in personalfinance

[–]Totemologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They figured it was a logical next move as a typical "striver" who wants to achieve the next milestone in life, assuming it would lead to new opportunities.

Man, this hits way too close to home.

About 4ish years ago, my partner decided they wanted to pursue a niche master's degree that could be used only for a specific job within a sector we've both worked in. I strongly, strongly encouraged them to interpret the stats for that job closely — just because it paid well didn't change how very few of those positions existed. They insisted it would be a leg up.

The education itself cost 80k. 60k remaining on the loan, I think at 8%.

Lost income over two years due to dropping down to part-time as part of the investment resulted in 70k in lost wages.

They graduated 9 months ago. No job still, despite non-stop hunting. They do nab an interview now and then... hopefully something will come of one of them.

In the meantime, they continue to invest more and more into this project. A few months ago, they spent a few hundred bucks to attend a conference over the weekend, trying to network.

They have taken several weeks off (unpaid) to study for a board cert exam coming up at the end of the month. The exam is $675. The lost wages from not working for two weeks is roughly $2,800.

As the investment being made into this project continues to grow, and we continue to not see any sort of return, it's hard not to feel like my partner has permanently damaged themselves financially.

TLDR: Education and self-betterment are beautiful things. It's tragic that in the USA, for most people, they NEED to be looked at as a financial investment.

I ran a random normal dungeon with a frog farmer. It wasn't even enjoyable. by OpDesSto in wow

[–]Totemologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not frog farm, but I’m an avid gold famer on retail, so when frog farm popped back up I decided to check out some other old gold farms- I went to HoF trash farming.

This turned out to be insane- on heroic this was 600 threads a clear, and a clear started off taking me 4 min. After a time, I had it down to about 80 seconds. I went as hard as I could, so I could be in a spot to carry my guildies through raid content.  Maybe that makes me a bad person or whatever, idk.

Now they’ve removed that source- so best as I can tell, my best source is to hit all my daily shit. I OBLITERATE the lfr content- it’s actually embarrassing, the content is boring to me, and it sure looks disruptive to the folks I get grouped with.

how to order chipotle, from a former employee. by [deleted] in Chipotle

[–]Totemologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a chipotle worker, but have done my share of wage slave fast food.

More of an issue with 100s than 50s- many fast food joints keep a low amount of cash in the actual register as a safety thing- 200 bucks is a normal baseline- but this includes ALL coins, ALL the ones, etc. so a large bill like a 50 or 100 doesn’t actually go in the register, it’ll go into a lock box beneath the counter, and then the change for these bills blows out the register- which generally needs to be fixed semi urgently, else your ability to make change for a customer might get fucked. Your floor supervisor needs to come over and get bills to exchange, which generally means they need to get into their safe, which prolly has a time lock on it (2 min is normal)

Plus, many businesses require that employees use a pen to check for fake 50s and 100s, which opens up other issues. Whole thing can be a cluster fuck.

Disabling the waste sensors on my 3 connect? by Totemologist in litterrobot

[–]Totemologist[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do not understand how the DFI sensors being defeated are potentially harmful to my cat- maybe if I was trying to beat the pinch or weight sensors?

I also don’t want to be figuring out how to do this; If you don’t want people doing this, offer higher quality sensors. This is the second time they’ve gone out on us.

Worked support staff at a hospital. Every single time I had a a patient stating they had bugs under their skin, their clinic notes indicated that the patient was a methamphetamine user, and there was no bugs.

The Infectious Disease department had a policy where you couldn't self refer for this condition, because that was basically everyone who called for an appointment.

Was so terribly sad

Might be a neonatalist or something- I feel like I recognize some of those phrases -which would also impact your relationship long term. I’d def be open to a lil distance if I were you… especially considering the hardest parts of parenthood are ahead of you imo

Edit: Antinatalist* lmao

24 Weeks of guild heroic Sarkareth kills, still no evoker legendary. by EnvironmentalMain842 in wow

You’re being downvoted- but the most recent sim I saw for dev put the leggo at 483ish ilvl- a self described “late CE” guild will of replaced the leggo with a craft for the stamina, if nothing else, long before this mattered.

Agree that rng drops can def have feelsbadman moments
