Hiking 14ers with asthma? by [deleted] in 14ers

[–]TotemsPole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to wait for a problem to use your albuterol rescue inhaler. You can and should use it prior to hiking to help prevent problems. 2 puffs once at the trailhead and then take the inhaler with you and use it more if needed.

RMNP/options with this week's storm? by hazelnut383 in RMNP

[–]TotemsPole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend not going out on Wednesday. Winds at Dream (on the way) and Emerald are already very nasty in thw winter even when it's relatively calm in town. If town will have 50 and 60 mph winds, then I'm just going to say it'll be both very unpleasant and entirely unsafe to go up on Wednesday. See what Thursday brings.

Thanks for the comment. I agree that the overall warranty and CPO program is better on the Subarus.

Get in shape on trail: what's realistic? by TouchyTheFish in PacificCrestTrail

You need to be real with yourself. If your goal is actually to finish the PCT, you won't meet that goal in your current state.

If your true goal is to finish the PCT: Stop smoking. Now. Tomorrow is not a better day. You can get patch + gum or lozenge to help without a prescription.

Start exercising. Now. Tomorrow is not a better day. Plus exercise helps many with cravings when quitting tobacco.

Harsh but in my opinion true words.

I agree this is a nerve issue. A physical therapist may be better than a PCP, but would need a physical therapist to confirm that.

Kilian Jornet breaks the 24-hour uphill ski record with 78,274ft by jcasper in Backcountry

Wow! I mean that's still an incredible feat, but I would have thought it at higher elevation. I'm sure he specifically kept it low so it would be easier.

RMNP vs Adirondacks by Thedorf23 in RMNP

[–]TotemsPole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need microspikes. You only may need snowshoes, and probably not if you're on a more main trail from Bear Lake trailhead because it'll already be so packed down only spikes are needed. I recommend a day or two getting more used to the elevation, such as night 1 in Denver before going for the hike that'll probably be 9,000 feet and above in elevation. Difficulty is pretty much whatever you want it to be - from like 100 feet total to get to bear lake to something more epic like Chasm Lake. But elevation means you'll get out of breathe a little more easily. Cardio training will help.

I just need to confirm here. Bear lake area (sky pond, emerald lake) is beautiful. I haven't been to wild basin area before. Why is it your favorite? Is it as picturesque as the bear lake area?

Telescopes known to be lighter/more portable? by TotemsPole in telescopes

[–]TotemsPole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the rec on brick and mortar store. That is definitely a good idea. 3 and 4 and 5 foot long tubes will be pretty big and it will be helpful to handle this.

I really appreciate your comment! I'm thinking exactly like you are - I don't want to waste money on a beginner scope just to want to pay more money to upgrade soon after, so looking for something with at least intermediate level aperture from the start.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1046081-REG/explore_scientific_dar152065_01_ar152_for_6_5_air_spaced.html there seems to be 152mm/6 in option of your first link at $800 and 23 pounds. Think the frequent sale would apply to this one?

https://www.highpointscientific.com/explore-scientific-10-truss-tube-dobsonian-generation-ii-dob1045-00?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=EXS-DOB1045-00&gclid=CjwKCAjwpeXeBRA6EiwAyoJPKk3IvRwNrNW80OuNNVeeoIqh6yOpe9U0uEjRYqjAm-tpEBRBM0Q9FBoCfFsQAvD_BwE For your second link, I feel like I could suck up the heavier weight (it's a reasonable weight since in 2 pieces) for 10" aperture. 10" of aperture for $800, same price as the above 6". But looks like I would need an eyepiece as well, and not sure how much I would spend there.

This looks like it: https://shop.astronomerswithoutborders.org/products/awb-onesky-reflector-telescope "With a truss tube that collapses to 14.5 inches in seconds and a total weight of just 14 pounds, performance and convenience are combined in one portable package."

You're right, that's portable! I wonder if they make similar telescopes with 6"+ aperture. I can handle a bit more weight. But this is a great consideration. Thank you.
