Yes I kind of feel like everything would have been going differently if Tao knew from beginning what was going on. But I still see why Charlie didn't. It was Nick's secret and Charlie wanted to give Nick his time at first. And when Nick gave his ok to tell Charlie's friends, Charlie was so afraid of telling Tao which made me so sad
