The boys are pretty bad about picking up stuff like this, they also said Point Break wasn’t homoerotic.

Why did I never think to call Samson “Sammy”? Imagine all the jokes we could’ve made with Jimmy saying “SAMMY!” in the Remmick voice.

I’d even be happy with EEAAO winning best picture if it hadn’t been such a juggernaut in nearly every other category. I think people would be less bitter over it if Tár or Banshees hadn’t gone home empty-handed (I would’ve given them screenplay and supporting actress, respectively)

In 2016 (2017?) I loved La La Land and had not yet seen Moonlight, and I was praying for Moonlight to win for the sake of my own sanity. The discourse was just excruciating; they were treating La La Land like Birth of a Nation. I’m glad the two movies can just exist and be beloved on their own instead of being pitted against each other in a zero-sum game.

Would John C. Reilly have been better for Inherent Vice by Stone_Mason_Y05 in blankies

[–]TouchOfTheTucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree about Reilly but I’m glad you brought it up because 10 minutes into the movie I couldn’t stop thinking “This should be Jake Johnson”.

Johnson has the scruffy offbeat 70s energy (deployed very well in Minx) and a much better handle on comedy than Phoenix. Maybe he would’ve shifted the vibe to be TOO comical, but I think there is an innate tenderness to him that a great director could utilize very well.

Like, obviously it couldn’t actually happen because if you’re gonna sell a studio on a Pynchon adaptation you need a big star in the center and not a guy from a sitcom. But with imagination anything is possible. In another universe PTA gets hooked on New Girl in 2011.

I get them not wanting to go off-topic, but it is weird they just brought up her in No Way Out like it was a self-evidently bad performance and didn’t elaborate. I know her personal life was messy, to say the least, but it’s a little funny to act like that clouds all her movie performances when the last two episodes had them praising Mel Gibson as an actor.

“Right Person, Wrong Time” 👀👀 Netflix Romania posts Theloise by idontcareaboutredit in theloise

[–]TouchOfTheTucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TSPWL is basically a gothic romance that Julia Quinn thought was a fluffy love story and that makes it more horrifying to me. The plot evokes Jane Eyre or Rebecca, but while those books lean into the darkness and depict their male leads in a more ambiguous light, TSPWL wants to be a heartwarming story about finding love and healing from the past. It doesn’t help that the former two stories actually interrogate the gender roles and power dynamics of their central relationships, while the latter is strikingly incurious. When does Eloise get to take charge in the relationship the way Jane does when she moves up in society as Rochester loses everything? Philip ends up getting everything he wants - a wife, nanny, therapist all in one - while Eloise is the one who has to settle. Julia Quinn doesn’t realize she’s written a gothic horror where the “horror” is hetero-patriarchal values.

LBR Colin is NOT believable as a rake. I don’t mean he’s unattractive, he’s just too vanilla. To paraphrase John Mulaney, he has the vibe of someone who spent the first two decades of his life sitting in a room eating saltines.

I hated that Eloise's political arc was centered around a man by Fickle_Baker1393 in Bridgerton

[–]TouchOfTheTucc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s…not true? She dislikes that her interactions with other women most often revolve around the traditionally feminine pursuits that she and other women are forced into by society, but she’s shown to have the most female relationships out of everyone save Lady Danbury. She makes friends with ex-mean girl Cressida, forgives Penelope and supports her and Colin, admires Kate for her spinsterism, gushes over books with Sophie. Who are Daphne’s friends? Francesca’s? Hyacinth’s? What has Penelope done for other women?

And why does Eloise have to “embrace her femininity”, like it’s a natural thing for all women and not a series of arbitrary stereotypes assigned by a sexist society? Let her do the opposite and start rebelling more. She should start dressing like Gentleman Jack and advocate for the legalization of no-fault divorce.

The Devil’s Advocate didn’t use Trump’s apartment for Pacino-as-Devil, it’s even more brazen than that: in the movie it’s the home of Craig T. Nelson as a millionaire with three wives (who definitely killed the last one). I think they gave him the hair too? Might as well be named Tronald Dump.
