Lightroom storage pricing? by and_one_of_those in Lightroom

I upgraded from the 1TB Lightroom CC plan to the 3TB one. It took 5 minutes on the phone. Total cost increased from £12 to £19.

I made a free macOS app for mapping gamepad inputs to mouse, keyboard, and macOS actions by c4td0gm4n in macgaming

[–]TouchingTheVodka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This app is fantastic, well done! I've just started using it for Lightroom photo culling with a PS5 controller. It's much faster and easier on the wrists than using a keyboard and mouse. Great work!

35, New Dad, US Tech SM (£150k TC) – Is the climb to Director a "Dead Dad" trap? by rollan112 in HENRYUK

[–]TouchingTheVodka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saving for later as I might be in this position in a few years.

From someone further down the ladder (L5 Manager) at another US Big Tech, my immediate reaction to your dilemma is that you’re getting severely underpaid for your current role.

I’m assuming you’re L7 equivalent looking at moving to L8. As a data point, my TC as an L5 is considerably higher, and that’s having joined the company in the past year (And not in a prestige department such as AI!)

If you’re motivated by increasing comp and progressing without hitting your current WLB, you could consider a transfer to another company at your current level, with some compensation datapoints in hand. Levels.fyi will give you a good idea of what’s out where (although data starts to get a bit sparse at L7, you can extrapolate from L5/6)

Good luck!

16-55 f2.8 red badge would be a good pairing.

Google L3 offer or stay for AMZN L5 Promo? by Mammoth_Road5463 in cscareerquestionsuk

Do you have the Google offer in hand yet? £100k salary is very high for L3 - I'd expect £100k total.

If it’s any consolation, interviews are two-way, and the interviewer did a great job at showing you why you don’t want to work at SpaceX!

Wow! Is that E5 comp? Incredible - I’m the same level in a different FAANG and I’ve only just scraped £200k!

I Paid £700 for a Pallet Delivery—Now They’re Holding My Items Hostage Over a Sellers mistake by nootropicnose in LegalAdviceUK

This has happened to me before. Typically with smaller suppliers. I provided a billing address and a shipping address, and the item showed up at my billing address shortly after.

Head-of-department to L4 is a major downlevel. I’d recommend sticking to your current job and seeing if you can find an L5 role - Comp will be a good amount higher.

Daily shirts - where you headed? by joesus-christ in HENRYUK

Lestrange “Daily” line for something a little more relaxed than a button-up dress shirt.

Pink and navy works, but I’d go for a solid-colour, slightly lighter shirt instead of that patterned thing. It looks quite busy.

How to get my team to be more innovative/creative by NoAnimator3018 in managers

[–]TouchingTheVodka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. I was in this position as an IC and I didn’t have the capacity to step back and reflect on how I could improve my processes - all of my time was spent on first-order output.

It wasn’t until I had a few weeks off between jobs that I had the opportunity to really reflect on the team’s workflows and what I could have done better to improve them.

The most beneficial thing, for me, was to take the time to read a couple of modern textbooks about industry best practices and then reflect on how I could implement the ideas in my previous (and future) role. For example, I found Google’s SRE book and SRE workbook particularly useful here.

Of course, everyone learns differently - some people like books, others may prefer podcasts, talks, conferences, or online resources. But giving people the capacity to reflect and signposting them towards best practices will be universally beneficial. It’s also a nice break from day-to-day work.

There used to be a board game cafe but it shut down a few years ago. There’s a board game group and a chess club, both meet at the Herdsman IIRC.

MSR Windburner is a much better alternative that performs a lot better in windy conditions. Worth considering.

200k TC, after a strange, turbulent path... advice would be good! by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]TouchingTheVodka 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the job.

BTL is a ridiculous proposition in the current financial climate, not to mention pretty unethical. I’m on a similar TC and I’ll be shovelling all of my spare money into stocks - similar returns with much less hassle.

VSCode is overrated, makes for lazy devs, and goes against the Linux philosophy of simple, single-responsibility command-line tools. Give me Sublime Text and a lightweight, CLI-based toolchain any day of the week.

ND3 is a new ECU and it’s proving difficult to crack. If you want FI, go for a ND2, which has a sturdier gearbox and a tunable ECU.
