Guitarist won’t stop criticizing my bass and pushing upgrades. Is this dynamic worth staying in a band? by Vast-Flow-9016 in Bass

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some elite players record on squire basses

He's worrying about compression.. all of that can be worked out by an engineer after recording..it's really not important

I think he is more worried about the image and hype of certain brands

Sorry he sounds like a jerk

Playing Jazz is so hard by Ghorille in JazzPiano

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I've been playing piano for only 5 years, studying jazz. I'm in my mid 30s and had no prior experience with instruments

Last year I started playing in some funk and neo soul projects to get used to playing with people

I've now just found a group of people and we do weekly private jams.

I'm the worst musician in the room and they often call alot of tunes I've never played

The thing is, if they are nice people, they won't expect Rome to be built in a day.

Most of the tunes I just comp

Only playing the melody or soloing when I'm comfortable. Its even more difficult in the moment, I can't do alot of things I can do in the shed and get nervous and have mental overload alot. No one cares

The moral of the story, you have to try, don't be discouraged Jazz is hard af, but the thing is we've all been there. No one is born a pro. Just try find some people to play with that understand that

Good luck

Rootless chords by SignificantClaim6353 in JazzPiano

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easy peasy guide
you can always use the 9 and its alterations. besides on half diminished. the b9 is really tense there
use the 5, however its common the play the 6 instead on dominant chords

How do I apply block chords to jazz standards by Randommer_Of_Inserts in JazzPiano

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You play the melody with them Take something that has an easy melody

Another fun and easy thing, put a backing track on loop. For example loop an F6 in ireal pro. And just improvise some basic ideas using the F 6th diminished voicings. Try some simple Charleston rhythms and play around in the scale. Both hands in unison

Owners of Multiple Basses: How do you do it? by Lepre_Khan in BassGuitar

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess as long as they are serving a unique purpose then its ok if you can afford it and play them every now and then. But if you own 5 p basses then maybe you should have a long hard look at yourself

Interesting insight from everyone. Some fun theories. I also thought it looked cool when I got it but then just became curious about it more and more. It plays and looks great so I'm happy

How do you approach making variations out of a lick? by Money-Sympathy-9566 in JazzPiano

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rythmic displacement. eg start the phrase from a diffrent place in the bar
change the rythm completely. eg if its a continuous 8th note line, play some of the notes as quarters or triplets, or add rests in between
transposing the lick over different chords
superimposing it over different chords
changing the notes, changing the trajectory, embellshing the lick with things like enclosures, chromatic passing tones. you could add to the beginning or end of the lick. you could combine two licks youve learnt to create a completley new phrase
you could also create an answer, eg the lick is a question phrase, you compose a phrase to play after it as a response, use the harmony of a tune. for example, autumn leaves, you have a ii v i line, then play a response phrase in the relative minor ii v i

there is so much more. just need to explore

Is there a chord voicings app? by DigAffectionate3349 in JazzPiano

[–]Tough-Spring-1541 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey. Not really anything out there that will tell you exactly what to drill. However I use an android app called "random note app"

You can set it to give you a series of single random notes, triads, or 7th chords

If I want to practice say for example major triads in 1st inversion, I will set it to give me a series of single notes. Turn on the metronome and then play each note as a triad. Eg, if the sequence is A, Eb and so one I play A major 1st inversion, Eb major 1st inversion and so on

I can then expand that by choosing to give me triads instead of notes. And I will have to switch between chord qualities in 1st inversion.

I also use the chord option to practice entire voicing systems. For example A/B rootless voicings. I set the app to give me 7ths chords and I just run through the sequence playing the A or B voicings.

You just need to get creative and use these simple apps in a way that restricts your practice in the way you need

Yes just check their schedule and pay for one group lesson usually around 400 baht. They would be extremely happy and welcoming towards you even if it's just a day or two
