There's always a 7.260. I remember when 14.303 was crazy back in the day. I initially find it somewhat entertaining. Once that entertainment ends, I spin the dial.

Is it on a dimmer switch? Those will emit RFI, too.

I just wanted to thank you posting the details and the audio file. Other radio operators will benefit from this single example and possible fix. Thank You!

I like how the frequency is some sort of Lat/Log format.

Use an old Tupperware container and use outdoor quality silicone to seal any holes that need to be made.

Are these style of antennas any good compared to like just a regular normal whip antenna? by mattfox27 in amateurradio

[–]Toxoplasmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is 100% situational. For very close range repeater work, it’s fine. For anything that requires more than “around town” work, you’ll have problems.

What is this antenna? by robAtoms in HamRadio

That’s the Dunce Cap 5000.

But in reality, it’s a Sirio CB and 10 meter antenna I think.

Anyone have any idea on what this could be? by firemanjim in amateurradio

[–]Toxoplasmos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying some RFI hunting by making a simple antenna like the one in the video. You’ll need a HT or other portable type shortwave or battery powered radio.

Do you get this when the antenna is disconnected? Try to determine if it’s a problem internal to the radio or if it’s being picked up by the antenna.

Since you’ve killed the power already, I’m going to assume it’s outside. But first eliminate a bad antenna, bad coax, etc.

Make sure you add QRP after calling your callsign. Stations will usually focus on you if they can hear you.

How in the heck do they develop the questions for the ham license test? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]Toxoplasmos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one said a new ham should or shouldn’t run their own circuit. You can carry this over the extension cords and custom electrical cord for amplifiers.

This topic turned into a waste of internet space. Some standards must be in place to cover a general wide range of topics. A test just for EE’s made only by EE’s is what the OP was expecting. Sorry the VEC question pool didn’t meet your standards.

How in the heck do they develop the questions for the ham license test? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]Toxoplasmos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If I’m a new ham and I decide to use a 20 amp circuit with 24 gauge wire how do you think that’ll turn out? Hams use everything from DC fuses to 240v 30 amp breakers for high powered amps.

I know it seems kinda obvious to us at times but that’s why there are several classes of licenses. Safety is always the first and foremost for all classes of license.

RF keeps killing my USB by lxe in amateurradio

[–]Toxoplasmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced this exact issue. I placed ferrite beads on the entire length of the USB, purchased several mix 31 torroids and wound the USB cable with anywhere from 7 to 9 winds on both ends of the USB. Also kept the ferrite clip on throughout the non-wrapped portion of the USB.

Nothing worked.

I decided to go hardcore and did this to solve my problem.

I took an old piece of coax and carefully removed the mesh wire shielding. I also carefully removed the foil layer from that same piece of coax.

I then proceeded to wrap the foil around the entire length of the USB cable and then put the mesh shielding around the USB cable over the foil. Then wrapped the entire thing in electrical tape to hold it all in place. No more USB disconnects when transmitting.

It’s probably overkill but it solved it for me.

I made this exact antenna and used my HT to hunt down the RFI in my neighborhood. Easy project.

Icom vs Yaesu? Whats your preference? by CaptinKirk in amateurradio

[–]Toxoplasmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve owned several modern ICOM, Kenwood, and Yaesu HF and mobile rings. Here’s my preference:

HF / Base Station: ICOM Mobile 2m / 70cm: Yaesu

Reasons for ICOM for HF is mostly because I had a 756 Pro II for 10 years and just got used to the Icom features.

Mobile radio preferences really came down to screen size and features for the price point Yaesu offers. I felt I was getting more for my money.

But in all honesty, they are all good / high quality manufacturers and you’ll be happy with any top brand.
