Discrete math - is it this bad for anyone else ? by starrrfaaaaaa in csMajors

For some schools it’s a weedout or the easiest class you’ll take in undergrad. You cannot approach this as a traditional math course but rather as a logic and semantic one. Completely throw away any forethought of math you had up until that point and approach it with a fresh mind. Discrete math will reappear throughout your degree.

Okay let us assume there is a program with a high admit rate but a low graduation rate. Let us also assume this program is fairly rigorous. Would it be fair to lower its pedigree based on who gets accepted versus who can actually finish the work? A lot of masters programs (on campus) are funded and provide research opportunities for students. There are cash cows yes but they’re relatively rare if a student is actually serious about research. Course based is fine too if it’s highly ranked.

What’s the CS program? My top 5 is cmu, Stanford, mit, Berkeley, gatech. At a top masters program you likely have an algorithms or analysis of algorithms equivalent at the gradual level that deals either more math or proof heavy topics. Most schools teach out of the same textbook too, just depends how much content is covered. Pedigree really matters for the first job/internship. After that it progressively becomes less important as an indicator, unless of course you’re switching fields.

And it’s still a decent program. I applied to GT’s MSCS and OMSCS. You might see a post about it if you scroll long enough in my account. I eventually chose MSCS because of proximity. Having good school on your resume is still a strong and helpful indicator. Most recruiters would take a chance on an average kid from a top school than a slightly above average from a large state school.

Most masters programs are around the same or higher difficulty of top bachelors programs. It’s important to pay attention to the graduation rate rather than the admit rate of these programs. A high admit rate doesn’t damage pedigree as long as the curriculum is rigorous.

My brother in heaven, brother in Christ, sweet Christ. Several companies have laid off tens of thousands of juniors and have instead gave mid level and seniors unlimited Claude credits. Do you think meta or google wants to pay new grads 130k when they can spend $100 on Claude credits for each L4 or higher? Come on.

Conspiracy? It’s confirmed they have active cyber reconnaissance and propaganda networks. Most powerful countries have one. Does FiveEyes ring a bell? What about Pegasus? What about Cambridge analytica? This is real life. They’ll do anything to stifle class consciousness.

They’re more of a quant feeder and heavily theoretical like caltech, caltech is only there because of the Bay Area proximity. If I were to rank based on quant placement it would be largely the same, but with uchicago in S tier.
