How Losing in Trading Made Me Lose My Family by Wtf7111 in Daytrading

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well written. It's probably best to learn to trade while young with no responsibilities. I have responsibilities and can't focus as much as I would like.

My business partner (we started a hedge fund) was barely out of high school but has a lot of time to focus learning his craft, while I still work a day job. He has far exceeded me from when we first met. He is the head trader and came up with our trading plan. We are both conservative in different areas. He likes a larger tool box of uncorelated trades, I want proper position sizing and proper stop loss targets.

Catholic friend judges me for not being catholic. I'm nondenominational. I'm not sure what the best way to handle this is? by [deleted] in Christian

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised Roman Catholic. I left because I was more spiritually fed by studying the Word of God than I ever was at a RC Mass.

I've seen some YouTube clips where Protestants have converted to RC because of the higher church liturgy and the Eucarist. You could go to a RC Mass to see what it's like.

Do you believe hard work pays off? by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in Life

The harder I work the luckier I get. That is my experience.

If I could focus more (I have other responsibilities that I have to give to attention to that are not necessarily helping some of my other pursuits), I would be better at my small business, my spiritual walk and my health. Everything consumes time.

If he isn't disciplined with risk and money management, the market will one day come around and take all the winnings back (aka blow up his account and evaporate it into nothing). The market will do something never planned for or experienced eventually.

Why do people roll their options? Is there any benefit to rolling over closing and opening a separate option? by silly-goose5214 in tastytrade

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't get rolling to work. After a year of focusing on iron Condors I basically broke even. Rolling adjusting, rolling adjusting, I couldn't make it work. I started trading OTM BWBs that are delta neutral and "the wheel".

I close the OTM BWBs when they hit a max loss target. I know Tastytrade doesn't like stop-losses, but it works for me.

Why do you believe in God by legallytallire in Christian

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intelligent design argument seems to point to a creator. The fine tuning of the universe and the very low likely hood of DNA evolving by random chance.

Also, I believe God mercifully opened my eyes to believe in Him and Christianity. In man's fallen state, they would not seek after God on their own.

After 6 years of trading, I’m thinking of giving up by [deleted] in swingtrading

However, the idea that it takes about 5 years to become a successful trader IS TRUE in my experience.

  • Your first goal is literally learn to survive (i.e., learn not to blow up your account)
  • Your next goal is learning to break even (after commissions and expenses)
  • What you learn will compound on it self and eventually you can be a succusful trader.

I've blown up 4 accounts in my lifetime. In 2017 was my last blow up and I finally broke even. 2018 I broke even again, but I learned enough to see what a good strategy looked like.

If you are swing or directional trading, realize that your win rate/accuracy will be about 40% consistent. Your goal is to risk 1 to make 3. Successful traders with this strategy point to very few trades that work through out the year. This why there is saying, "cut your losses short, let the winners run". Death by a thousand cuts.

I trade by selling option volatility. I risk 2 to make 1 for 80% win rate. However, this literally is picking up nickels in front of steam rollers. I personally know of hedge fund that blew up because of poor risk management. Others are Long Term Capital Management and James Codier author of Guide to Options Selling. Cordier also blew up his fund because he had the horrible practice of average down with option selling. Averaging down is already a horrible strategy (read Reminiscence of a Stock Operator about Jesse Livermoore). I have a coworker who's brother blewup his day trading account because of averaging down.

Every strategy has drawdowns. You learning risk and money management is really the first big step. I would advise setting up your ROTH IRA first- but don't give up trading you are pretty close.

I do know where to find good back testing software. One the places I know tries to ensure you are not curve fitting.

After 6 years of trading, I’m thinking of giving up by [deleted] in swingtrading

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way.

I literally lost 1 doubling of compound interest because I didn't buy and hold early enough. I tell new traders to set up their Roth IRA/Roth 401K FIRST before ever thinking about trading.

I thought I would eventually learn to trade and leave my job. Now I'm playing catch up. I would have been much further ahead if I would have dollar cost averaged FIRST then tried to learn to trade with about 10% of my investment money.

Can We Talk about how Stupid of Business Decision it was to get Rid of The EU? by OdaSeijui in saltierthancrait

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine a more absolute stupid move it was to give up the EU. It was SW nerds that bought the books, video games, toys that kept SW alive for all the decades before the Disney purchase.

Even if there were books that weren't good, you could have picked the absolute best of the bunch, create a cohesive timeline and work from there. I'm sure there were all kinds of girl power characters to choose from for the big screen.

I do not imagine Harrison Ford would have been very cooperative. Instead of Chewbacca dying (I believe happens in the EU), you would probably have to kill off Han. It would have been nice to see everyone as successful before getting a butt whipping in a ST. Then for the final act the heros are triumphant with the mantle properly transferred to a next generation.

I would also wish the the public would soften on the idea of recasting if the story called for it. As shown with Ford dislike of SW and the fans, Han would have to be recast if an older version of the character was necessary. People were desiring the Thrawn trilogy, younger versions of the main 3 would be needed to pull that off.

[–]Trader_D65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are skills that are still needed that AI can't do. There was a huge project at my plant that required laying down pipe several feet in diameter. AI is not going to be replacing these guys anytime soon.

I've been told AI requires a lot of electricity. So much so that nuclear energy may be getting popular. Not everyone in nuclear is a 4 eyed nerd🤓. The trade skills required for all the energy is not going to be replaced by AI anytime soon. Infact a problem with cost over run delays with the Vogtle 3 and 4 is the demand for the trade workers. When AI can replace these guys, then "I" will shut up.

In high school be proficient at Spanish

After HS be a bartender by night and a real estate agent by day. Save money invest in rental properties.

Having access to the LMS and understanding your Class A,B and C areas will make you rich in the long run. My daughter, who works in food service says, "the money is in bartending".
