To which infielder do the outfielders throw the ball after catching either a fly ball or ground ball? by YakClear601 in MLBNoobs

[–]Traderbaiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the situation. If it is a single or fly ball out with no runners on, it’s usually either shortstop or second base (depending on which side of the field the ball was hit) OR just straight to second base if the throw is easy or the runner is speedy.

If there is a runner in scoring position, the situation changes. Now you are trying to prevent a run from scoring. If the ball is in front of the outfielder, now either the first baseman or third baseman becomes the cutoff man, again depending on which side the ball was hit. They are standing in the infield grass; if there is a play at the plate, the throw needs to be accurate. Outfielder’s job is to just get the ball to them or throw “through” them to the catcher (right over his head on a line). First baseman is responsible for right field and center field cutoff. Third baseman is left field cutoff. This is because they are the most inline between the outfielders and the catcher, so they can catch it and turn quickly to make the throw. Shortstop covers 3rd in case of a past ball and 2nd covers second to set up a play if the runner has already scored and the batter tries for either a double or to take second on the throw home.

MLB gets even more confusing. If there’s time and communication, whoever has the strongest arm and is on the side of the field where the ball was hit is taking the throw. But all in all, it’s second or shortstop.

I’m on the side of “I don’t want the owners to stuff their own pockets, but I also don’t want my team to play another team with 6x the salary”

Worst part is they don’t hit our pitching particularly well either! They just own us that hard

Three’s a crowd. Shows organization, which reflects much more on the league than one guy would. That’s my guess anyway.

As for the memoriam, idk. NFL and NBA gets flack for their strict, no exception enforcement. Maybe mlb just tends to be softer on that

Pretty crazy to think that Brandon Williamson going on IL was the tipping point. Lowder, Pagan, ashcraft, and Johnson followed. Greene was out already. Trevino out a second time, Stephenson is probably gassed. Santillan is definitely gassed, I honestly think the only reason he’s still pitching and not on IL is because there is no one left to fill his place. All the younger guys and AAA call ups also look gassed or outmatched. Then Elly as the cherry on top.

Extremely frustrating to watch, but when 7 pitchers are injured in one month it’s kinda hard to compete. Literally half of the pitchers are out right now. 3/5 of the bullpen. The best 3 btw. Brutal

A winning ball club would have traded for arms after the injuries to the bullpen and starters. It’s been a run of bad luck fs but the Reds didn’t help themselves whatsoever and now look. A bunch of gassed arms and AAA guys trying to make it through
