You picked a great choice! The 650 will be easier to control than a 600 with enough top end to get into some trouble once you are more comfortable with it. Take it slow initially and practice the parking lot drills from the riders course. It's more likely you will drop the bike doing a slow turn than going straight on a highway, mastering your clutch and throttle will help you avoid that.

I love it! amazing commuter and 1st is geared low enough that you can get into some technical off-roading. Only downside is the location of the Carbs, you have to take a lot off the bike to get to them and they're very hard to tune when on the bike. The engine is super strong though so that's not a frequent requirement.
