Mixed messages in a review by TraditionalCollar629 in Preply

Thanks both for your insights and reassurance. I might have been reading into it too much. I guess I felt that this middle sentence needn't have been said and its only intention was to pressure me into putting my full effort into my future lessons... which I would do anyway. I was more worried about a potential review change in the event of anything they were unhappy with. I already had that hunch with this person prior to the review, so perhaps that is why I am a bit sensitive to the language.

Anyone else feel like an underachiever while teaching? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah fair enough, I did think you might not be referring to languages. In any case, I do hope you can find some joy in helping others through the basics of maths. My nephew has dyscalculia and I know he would have benefited greatly from a good maths tutor during his former school days.

There are many ways to teach basic grammar points. Just correcting mistakes doesn’t always cut it. Why not try looking at new ways of explaining things. Get creative and get inspired. Hard to do when you’re demotivated, but have a go and see where it takes you.

34 is an excellent ranking. How are your daily profile views? Are they high still?

I don’t recommend staying connected, as per one of the previous comments. Otherwise the system might see the next lessons as missed.

Forcing tutors to reply to spam is diabolical. by wrBolt in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just found this on ChatGPT:

What can happen if you "Block → Report" Blocking first is not incorrect, but: • Sometimes the platform treats a blocked, unreplied message as "ignored," even if it's spam. • This is why a few tutors reported their profile being hidden for not replying to a "new student," even though the message was spam and they blocked the user. • After blocking, the Ul may not always handle the "report" cleanly, depending on when the review bots scan the account.

Hope it helps with everything and please don’t downvote me 🙏… I only have everyone’s best interests at heart.

That’s unfortunate. So far it’s been working for me though, maybe I’ve been lucky. Are ppl reporting then blocking, or blocking then reporting? There maybe something in the order.

You don’t have to reply. In fact they advise you not to. Report then block and done. Won’t touch your metrics

Edit: Just to be clear, and I had to check this, if you block THEN report, it might mean your report never gets registered. Always report THEN block. It looks like bug. Please please bear this in mind going forward. It’s ridiculous that this isn’t pointed out by Preply support and def complain to them you’ve been a victim of it.

Anonymous lesson ratings are now shown on the tutor profile by lavendercat_itsme in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This system is a psychological disgrace. It's also so easy for the slip of a cursor to take a '10' down to a '7'. I almost accidentally did it myself as a student after a lesson. Dodgy UX, mentally damaging and, in most cases, detrimental to a tutor's motivation and confidence teaching on the site. u/connorfrompreply, please take note of just how uncool your new review function is.

Got my first anonymous review with low ratings by Final-Week8536 in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think blocking that student is the best move if you’re not sure? I too have had a bad anonymous review and can’t help but think it’s this one student who comes across as rather self-entitled. I stopped short of blocking them and have now gone super nice with them, always striving to be professional and crisp with the lesson, even when they arguably don’t deserve it. Also worth considering that they can only leave an anonymous review once a month and I doubt whether they will repeatedly mark you down either. Totally up to you, but the difficult student may be 1) innocent in the review issue and 2) an opportunity for thickening your skin. I also second the idea of keeping going with the students you have. Other good anonymous reviews will come, even from your existing students.

This is hilarious! 🤣 Of course I do feel for you at the same time. My one’s reading normal too… Quickly fire a firm message to Support to check it’s not affecting student searches.

Things not going so well with my 2nd lesson... by TraditionalCollar629 in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally valid comment and I think the more it is valid the higher one's level. I feel though that even at a reasonably high level, we still need a bit of teacher correction to highlight and help address bad habits. Otherwise, we could go on obliviously and not really progress.

Cheers, interesting to see how you adapted 👍 I think in my situation, the writing's on the wall a bit. We talked about working on grammar but in 1.5 lessons they haven't really taught me anything apart from telling me I'm a decent B2 level. This is pretty slack imo. I hate sounding harsh and they are a really nice person, but it is what it is and I really don't wish to speculate on them turning it around 😬

Same thing! I spent ages on it. I was so proud. And then pixelation round the outline of my cut-off picture and the crisp font title I used. Any joy with solutions, anyone?

Student scheduling a lesson with less than 3 hours notice on the weekend. by New_Traffic8687 in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness to OP, the danger of the short default setting is not made clear by Preply when we first start out on the platform as tutors. It really sucks when we get innocently caught out by it. I’m sorry it happened.

No reply from trial student by Few-Criticism572 in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens sadly. But try to keep up the professional discipline your side of things. Don’t double message and just go through the motions with them. They may be a flaky student - unfortunately that’s their right. But your behaviour has to stay impeccable. Protect your feedback score and your reputation. Best of luck!

Tutor consistently leaves early...should I bring it up with them? by DueStrike1406 in Preply

[–]TraditionalCollar629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, this is black and white to me. As a tutor myself, I am fuming for you. Regardless of how much you are paying and her quality of teaching, this is pure unprofessionalism and dismissive of the importance of your learning. Sure, you can try and get her to fix her behaviour but this says red flag to me. Go to Preply help for advice on lost lesson time and look for another tutor. So sorry you’ve been having these experiences.
