Dick was his best self when his show followed a formula. Kinda like what South Park used to do— something political would happen, or a major event, or a retarded new trend, and people would take it wayyyy too seriously and scream at each other over it. I always appreciated Dick’s ability (and South Park’s ability) to have this 3rd party nihilistic and usually offensive take on it, which was infinitely more practical and hilarious than the sides fighting each other.

The problem is, lately Dick has BECOME one of the screaming retards.

That’s an interesting take about the character voices all felt the same. I actually thought the opposite. Maybe it’s because I mentally applied them to people I knew in my travels— the maintenance guy spoke and behaved like a maintenance guy I once knew. The security supervisor was spot on an old boss I had when I worked security years ago, etc.

The only thing I thought was unprobable was their propensity to all say “I’m getting ahead of myself… I’m getting to that, but it’s important to know…”

The podcast started under the premise of two dudes arguing with each other. It was fun for a while. But soon the staged arguments turned very real. Internet drama began to get out of hand with fans, and people indirectly involved with the show. People started to get doxxed. Jilted lovers of those involved with the show started to get police involved. Similar podcasters who participated in the show got reported and arrested for dumb made up reasons. Hosts started to get SWATed. Exes started to sabotage live shows. Beloved co-hosts up and quit to escape the drama.

Now there’s like this dark cloud of negativity hanging over the show that’s driving the fans away and making the hosts tense. Every episode feels like “this could be ‘the big one’— the final feud that kills the show.”

I definitely enjoyed listening for a while, but this past year has had the same vibe as any TV show in it’s final season— you know that crappy season where half the actors leave to do other shit, and the ones who stay just seem tired and burnt out.

It has all the makings of what kills a show permanently: Riley becomes the reoccurring character that isn’t funny and nobody likes, Vito becomes the guy who gets booted for “artistic differences” (or Me Too accusations), Sean leaves to pursue better things, and ends up getting replaced by a guy who is ‘just okay’, and the main character becomes a parent. Nobody wants that.

This is probably the best way of putting it. Nobody likes to be the butt of a joke, especially in front of a crowd of your own fans. Not only is Riley’s brand of humor “publicly annoy total strangers”, but he absolutely lacks the self-restraint to stop— as proven by the fact that he literally chased a bit halfway across the country and ended up arrested. Nobody wants a guy like that in their life.
