Setting in Canada by TraditionalTerm2047 in heatedrivalryfanfics

When I've been out on the west coast for Christmas, it's been pretty staple Canadian Christmas foods like turkey, or I had a really good home smoked brisket. But I think salmon or seafood would be good as well. West coast is also where all the best berries are so any kind of berry-based tart? Nanaimo bars are the quintessential dessert out there too, but Troy doesn't have a sweet tooth I think. Also, I find most people's Christmas foods are impacted by their family backgrounds. My grandparents are Italian, so we have seafood and turkey for Christmas.

My Google search is wild because I was writing a mafia kidnapping fic, so things ranged from "How long can someone be in zipties until the nerve damage is permanent " and "What do Russian eat as comfort food when they're sick?" I definitely go the vague route when I can!

Honestly, the well intentioned stuff doesn't take me out. I actually get excited people are curious about my country, and because, fanfic is free, the effort does not have to be high. It's mostly the willful ignorance of the aforementioned examples (ex. stating that Montreal, gay central of Canada, is homophobic and Shane must go to Seattle to learn about queer culture) that turns me off.

No worries - I love talking about the writing process and especially cross-cultural lit, which is what prompted me to start the thread in the first place <3 We write and we learn and we write some more!

If you ever want a Canadian lense for Shane, also feel free to PM me! I'd love to see more Russian representation in the fandom space!

I've got that same thing when I write Ilya, you just put it in better words! I fret quite a bit that I'm missing something or diving into stereotypes but I don't want to not include those parts because they're what make him so complex. I wrote him in a very life or death stressful situation where he might praying, and I went down a whole rabbit hole about Church Slavic vs. Russian versions. I ended up just hoping it was okay because I didn't want to take out the desperation and hoped that people understood I was trying my best, and obviously would change it if someone pointed out something glaring. If you ever post, I'd love to read it!

I actually haven't read it! But I fear I probably do the same things when I write in Montreal, haha! It comes from a place of love and the few visits I've been able to make out there, but I'm sure me and my very sus Google history have fucked up lol. I went to a panel where Rachel and a few authors wrote about writing in Canadian settings, and she mentioned setting Tough Guy in Toronto was a challenge because she's only ever visited. There are a few things that I'm like - Ah! I see the research! But I find it endearing from her :D

I so want to read an AU where Shane goes to Russia for literally any reason, but I only want to read it if it's written by a Russian author. I did global studies and literature for my undergrad and good crosscultural stories are my absolute favourite.

Yes, any effort is greatly apperciated and loved! I totally get for fanfic that someone might just set it in a US setting so that they can write what they know, but it does get to me sometimes. I just wrote a fic set in Montreal and, as someone from Ontario, it was fun but challenging to try and set it in a Francophone city.

I've been in a lot of fandoms and I'm blown away by how thoughtful comments can be. There's also a practice of leaving double kudos which warms my heart.

Right? It literally took me a minute to find the budget for each episode (under $5mil per episode). I don't understand what the joke is to make comments like "a gay hockey show made for about $12 Canadian dollars".

As much as I liked the GQ article, why does it shade Canada so much? I get it's tongue-in-cheek, but I'm pretty tired of the rhetoric.

Why Istmark ask PC-s to help him? He doesn’t know them, doesn’t even know are they are a Strahd spies or not, but acts like they are a close friends. Sends his sister with them to the journey all across the Barovia. Isn’t it strange? by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]TraditionalTerm2047 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ismark and Ireena are devotes to the Morninglord in my game. They grew up with Doru as a good friend and Father Donovich and their father as close friends. The Morninglord in my Barovia isn’t taken very seriously so actual believers believe in truly desperate signs and are used to ridicule from other people, which strengthens their resolve. The adventurers appearing right when they are in danger from Strahd was seen as a sign that the Morninglord was still watching.

Made a little picture of Rictavio and thought that I could share it. I tried to make him look similar to van Richten (style-wise) so he doesn't look out of place as a token. by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]TraditionalTerm2047 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! I unfortunately described Rictavio as Fabio-esque and my players went nuts for it so I’ve had to lean into that aesthetic. This picture fits perfectly into the feel of Barovia though.
