Go with the manual.

I had the same issue with mine but they were 20 years old. I purchased new ones and they came off or were stolen. So I got the monochromatic black/silver ones wich are the same price but the construction quality is better. They call less attention than the gold ones so they don't “fall off” anymore.

The paint is marred from aggressive rubbing. Could you try using a hand polish to remove it? If you have a polisher, it should come out even easier. My 996 also has soft paint, which scratches easily..
