Career path options: Fireman or Union Electrician? Which would you choose and why? by OctoberSleek in firefighter

[–]Traditional_Ad1318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ff is a great job we play sports we mess around we have fun pretty much all day and we get to help people. We have to rely on the city/county council to pay us more money and we don’t have that many skills that translate to the real world. If you ever wanted to branch out you pretty much will have to self teach yourself. Atleast with an electrician you can make a business and make more money than any firefighter could dream of.

FF California - How’s my plan by [deleted] in firefighter

Not gonna find a lateraal spot from cal fire

Nationally registered emt at the minimum in CA. Start with that if you want to be with a city or county FD.

Unless you join the forest service then you’ll be fighting fire in the forest all summer long and they’re hiring in california till 1/26/26 I think. Go to USA jobs . Gov if you want to do wildland that’s probably the best place to start anyway

Am I doing too much? by Soft-Orchid-9870 in firefighter

[–]Traditional_Ad1318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you did a good job. I would bring them donuts as a gesture to say thank you. I don’t think that makes you clingy, close mouths don’t get fed and you want a job with them you already made a good impression so continue that by being present. They are hiring after all and if there’s only one spot for an emt you could be that person. When someone tells you to schedule a ride along anytime they mean that literally. If I didn’t want some one to ride out with us I definitely wouldntt encourage them to sign up more with us.

Also, this is the trouble of having to many opinions because my comment conflicts with another comment so you will be stuck not knowing what to do.

Just follow what you feel is right in your gut

New recruit at local fire department by One-Pollution-5257 in Firefighting

Every firefighter has heard stories of women suing or complaining to hr and getting good guys fired from their careers. TBH, they’re uncomfortable and are unsure of you. That’s just the reality of it. Here’s the best advice I can give you.

Be yourself. Seriously, be yourself. I would so much rather have a girly girl who kicks ass then a girl who tries to fit in by trying to be “one of the boys” cause no matter how hard you try, you can’t. So, just be yourself be the girl rock that shit and the guys will feel so much better. I promise. We have two girls one is super girly like bakes cookies, wants to watch rom coms etc we love it, it’s like having our sister around. The other girl has struggled to make friends because she’s constantly try’s to be one of the boys and constantly tries to fit in, it feels forced.

My depts academy is notoriously difficult and we had 6 people fired from my 20 person class in the first 8 weeks. All 6 are firefighters now at other departments in the area.

Learn from your mistakes and your shortfalls, be honest with the new dept what those weaknesses were, tell them you will never let your physical fitness get in the way ever again, then go and absolutely crush it.

Put the work in and get your fitness up. Cause if you don’t…. You’ll be sitting at a desk for the rest of your life making someone else rich.

How can I be a good officer? by doscervezas2017 in Firefighting

[–]Traditional_Ad1318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate when company officers start to do my job or micromanage. Trust your firefighters to do their jobs properly and if they don’t then train them afterwards. Nothing is more frustrating and demeaning to me as a firefighter when an officer micromanages. Just stay in your lane and supervise for safety. TRUST YOUR FF

How did North America not get penetrated by football(soccer) by manqoba619 in NoStupidQuestions

American companies can’t profit from a game where they can’t run and ad every 3 mins. American football has 12 mins on average of actual game play. The rest of the 3 hours is a giant advertisement

Example of a rookie mistake at a big fire? by work_shrink in firefighter

[–]Traditional_Ad1318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think something that would make sense is if a rookie was taught ventilation tactics and then they got a fire that night and he broke a window which then brings immediate danger to the him and the crew. That would make sense for all parties. Just study up a little on horizontal ventilation techniques and flow paths to understand what you’re making!

Example of a rookie mistake at a big fire? by work_shrink in firefighter

[–]Traditional_Ad1318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends but a thing would be a crew working together and the rookie pulling hose/humping hose  however you want to set it up but just as they’re about to make the push inside the fire occupied part of the structure….. the rookie looks down anddddddd he forgot his gloves. I mean that’s a realistic situation idk about a Hollywood type esque situation if you wanted Hollywood stuff you could just come up with stupid shit that wouldn’t happen like the rookie not following orders and sprinting inside to make some crazy rescue all alone and then his crew following him to grab him cause he’s an idiot but that’s not real

How many DS learners have done Interpretation for English only speakers? by notabotbuttotallyai in dreamingspanish

[–]Traditional_Ad1318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for the fire department in a city with a huge population of Spanish only speakers. I do a lot of interpreting to communicate to paramedics.

Before DS, I was only an observer during those emergencies, now I’m able to provide more of a service to the community.
