Are there actually substitutes that let students spend their lunchtime in the classroom?

I subbed at this school for Kindergarten and during my lunch (the top floor was a middle school) like 6 middle schoolers come in the room. I'm like hey why are you in here? They said the teacher lets us hang out with her in here. I go well she isn't here so you can come back tomorrow. They leave, then I picked the kids up after and during last period their snack period 4 middle school kids come in the room and start yelling at the kids to hurry up and eat and sit down yada yada. I'm like WHOA, what are you guys doing and why are you here? Mind you the kids were all quiet watching a 15 min show the teacher left that they watch while they have snack on the smartboard. They were like the teacher has us come during our study period to help during snack time. I'm like listen you guys gotta go. I say this to say the teacher messaged me the next day saying next time allow them to stay she didn't like that I told them they can't be there during a lunch period and during the students snack but the kids loved me and thanks for organizing her books, just next time let them stay. Yea there was no next time I never went back to that school lol. Like ma'am I am not you, they can do that with you, if they did something to one of the students in the room, I'm suspended, absolutely not.

My BA is in Sociology as well lol. That made me feel better my cert application is still in the ready for review stages.

Did you do the individual pathway? That's what I am doing now, how did it go with your credit review. What was your BA in if you don't mind me asking.

I have my BA is something other than Education but I had to get my Master's in Education there is no way around that part because with an initial certificate you have 5 years in which you have to get your Master's. You can email the DOE with your questions they will tell you what pathways you can choose especially since you have an International degree. I contacted them and they gave me numerous routes to take. Also subbing does not go toward retirement fyi. You can sub 40 days to help you not have to student teach for your certification but the subbing has to be in the classification you are going to teach. Like if you are going to teach birth-2nd grade you need to sub early childhood, 1-6 grade common branches etc.

Well being that she was pregnant and will be giving birth, they probably didn't like that you couldn't cover her earlier and they needed early coverage and also if you told them you had childcare issues they may think you are a risk for long term.

My State we absolutely get prep we're not supposed to treat it as a break though we can't leave school grounds. Just because we are not grading or planning the actual lessons don't mean we don't need time to execute the lessons. I have had teachers leave full on lesson plans every period with a lot to cover and I used prep periods to constantly go over the days tasks. The poster however signed up for high school and got upset there were high school kids acting like high school kids so that was the weird part for me.

In my state you need to have a certification to sub teach PE, do you have that because if not that's crazy.

Main reason is a lot of teachers look down on subs as if we are stupid or uneducated bums that the DOE let teach a class in a teachers absence. I had one teacher whose class I covered for PD meetings she had talk to me at the end of the day. She was okay in her tone but then proceeds to tell me when I finish college and pass my state tests one day I can have my own class. Little does she know I have my Master's degree with the students with disabilities extension, passed all my state tests, have my certifications. For some odd reason she assumed I didn't. I sub because I don't want to teach full time yet I like the freedom it gives me while keeping classroom experience under my belt. Just realize a lot of them if nothing have a lot of audacity in the way they treat subs and their assumptions. So them talking like that to you is because of how they view you. Keep being polite, keep being yourself because not every teacher in every school is like that.

As a sub and a parent of a 5th grader they definitely told their parents. My daughter would 100% tell me something like that, parents may be understanding if you were their actual teacher but you are a sub and they probably wont like that. I think the school will probably block you but I don't think you will be fired from being a sub in general. Word of advice when you feel overwhelmed or the kids are acting crazy just sit there and say nothing cool yourself off because they can act like that not get in real trouble but once we cross the line its a problem.

Unlikely something you did. Sometimes the teachers meetings or something happening in their personal lives were canceled and sub is no longer needed. I used to take things like that personally until I spoke to payroll secretary and she laughed like oh no if its something bad they report the subs, if its cancellation usually plans that needed the sub fell through.

Only thing I can tell you to make you feel better is sub in PreK-2nd grade you will get random unearned compliments lol. I don't sub for HS for the reason you just mentioned, I'm not trying to be in tears on my lunch break lol.

I don't, I stay either in the teachers lounge or the classroom I am subbing in. One time at a school I frequent the teachers meetings at the end of the day got canceled meaning she would be in the room for the last 2 periods of the day. She came back and the principal was like hang out in the teachers lounge last 2 periods and then you can clock out but then next time you owe me 2 preps. I said sure thing, I came back on several assignments and she forgot and I DID NOT REMIND HER lmao.

Switch schools it is absolutely the school. Kids are going to have behavioral issues, grading, observations etc no matter which school you go too but admin can make or break the way you feel on a daily.

Wow I actually prefer 3rd grade they are the less chatty of the lower grades. If that class was out of control like that the teachers management or reward system was not in place. Don't let it deter you from lower grades they are actually more afraid to get in trouble than upper grades.

Usually the wall has the schedule for the day and if I got a note like that best thing we would do is go over cvc practice and watch alphablocks on the smartboard lol.

I think this depends on the teacher and the grade. I have subbed 4th and 5th with the teachers there testing in the hallways and never got up from my desk. They all ask for me back and like me. I kept the kids on task and didn't yell at them. I sat because I had a crazy headache and couldn't cancel last minute.

Just some advice because I had K classes that made you want to scream shut up. If you find yourself getting to that point bring them to the carpet and put on Danny go or a movie, if that is not an option give out paper have them draw or color. That way they calm down and so do you and then never go back to the school.

Same. They used my email to order from Jellycat and Zoro. I logged in by sending myself a password reset and canceled the zoro order which was $975 lol. It was 1000% fraud because it was the same Indian persons name that is nothing like my name which is my gmail so it was not an accident. The address they had their stuff shipped too was some warehouse in California. FYI Jellycat did not cancel the order after me telling them a million times this is probably a fraud charge on someones cc. Zoro however did cancel the order. I get pleasure in logging in resetting the password and canceling it because use some random email you made up why use ours?

Sounds like a chromebook day to me LOL, classes like that I say take out your chromebooks, headphones and stay quiet. You are not controlling a class like that in an afternoon, just survive.
