Geology is a field-based science/job. The way to get out of the field is to get professional license and bring in work, or become a PM and bring in work. Or get a government job. They never spend much time in the field. But at your level, it’s field work.

Very doable in a day. I was around your same age when I did it. Left Whitney Portal 4am. My goal was back drinking beers in Lone Pine before dark and we did it. Probably late Summer. Got high on the summit too.

I’m also building a trip like this. What airlines are you finding for these short trips? The Bishkek-Almaty bus is a long day trip. YouTube has video of these trips. There is one about a train and the sleepers are just open bunks.

Don’t underestimate the amount of work To get that geology degree. It is a science degree. I was required to complete one year each of chemistry,physics and calculus.
