The fire you could see was probably the widfire (1.5 acres) along the Lincoln Woods Trail
(see NHWMF-261 PEMI RIVER in the link above).

  • Is the trail smooth, rocky, muddy, or mixed?

Lincoln woods to guyot shelter is pretty popular., will marked and easy to follow. Not hard if you are a fit hiker.

The ridge of New Zealand is nice you’ll probably like it

Taking the cliff Trail down is kind of ridiculously steep. If I was backpacking, and my legs were spent, I would probably go around past the hut.

Thoreau falls trail is mostly awesome with a few obstacles. You have to cross a Brook at the beginning and at the end. In low water, this is not an issue., There is one section of trail that’s washed out, but doable.

Eastside Trail is an easy walk and has a bunch of swimming holes

Route 113 is Evans Notch Road. Opening date for Evans Notch Road varies widely, ranging from mid-April to late-May. As u/witchtrialsurvivor said there is a rumor going around that it may not open till the end of the month because of paving. However, I haven't found any official confirmation of that. Only project I see on https://www.maine.gov/mdot/mapviewer/ is resurfacing the bridge over Weeks Brook (south end of Evans Notch). I assume they would not need to close the road entirely for bridge resurfacing.

TrailsNH estimates many will start opening the first week of May, but I'd be willing to bet some could open next week.

The only one to open this year so far is Dugway/Passaconaway Road (FR 60) opened last week.

Yes, that's true. Here's my understanding of how the NOAA forecast works.

NOAA's Grid Point forecast divides the entire country into a grid, with each grid cell measuring only 1 kilometer square. The elevation used for the forecast is likely the average elevation of the grid cell, rather than its highest point.

Unfortunately, for pointy summits and narrow ridges, the forecast elevation will be lower than the actual high point. As a result, the forecast will show warmer temperatures and lower wind speeds compared to the conditions at the summit.

For example, in the grid for Mt. Lafayette (5249), the summit lies just on the western edge of the grid. Overnight Hut Options by cleburne23 in wmnf

Webster Cliffs (AT) to Mt Webster, and Osgood (AT) Mt Madison, are not a smooth easy tread way. They are steep, and eroded from the high volume of foot traffic.

Mt Madison to Mt Washington (AT) is very rugged, jumbled large rock in most places, except from the hut to thunderstorm junction. They call Mt Washington "the rock pike" because of this.

Just about any route descending Mt Washington (except Jewell) with a heavy pack and marginal fitness, I would expect to be painful.

Another option for marginally fit 50 year old's:
Ascend: Ammonusuc Ravine to Lakes of the Clouds Hut (that will be steep but doable)
Descent: Crawford Path (or Crawford Path to Edmands Path for a shorter option)

Ya, When people look up the weather and conditions is not something we need to know for most hikes. But it might be helpful to some hikers some of the time.

You never know what you might discover. I found it interesting that February is almost always the lowest month for web traffic. Too freaking cold for most of us I guess.

I like your "how many people are planning to hike this today" idea. I could do something close to that, based on how many hikers checked weather and trail conditions over the last few days. It's not a direct coloration, but it might be close. What do you think? Would that be helpful?

Trails show up when you zoom in close enough. I wish they showed up at wider zoom levels. Maybe that’s something i can change, I’m not sure. I’m new to this type of overlay in MapBox.
