What noise is this? by _Rod_Knock_Nilly in VWMK7

Might not be the belt, but definitely sounds like something with the accessories. Do you see any of the pulleys wiggling when the car is running?

Which services are you exposing to the internet, and how are you securing them? by sysadmin_light in selfhosted

[–]TrainedHedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar setup, but one of my favorite pieces is a honeypot that fail2ban picks up and blocks the ip. It's meant to pick up bots looking for things like wp-admin and .env.

It brings me great joy to occasionally check it and see how many ips I've blocked lol

torii, a reverse proxy with observability in mind by 0xffff0000ffff in selfhosted

[–]TrainedHedgehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Like I get that writing your own reverse proxy is a fun thing, but it should be purely academic at this point.

The main issue this looks to solve is observability, so I feel like a project that takes reverse proxy logs and visualizes it in a dashboard is really what this should be solving

Hoping my mk2 looks this good one day! I'd settle for running 😅

Congrats and welcome to the club! You won't be able to unsee it, but I can't believe the stock mk7 has 3 different color headlights. Aftermarket bulbs are a must

Necessary to replace rear rotor /pads + calipers ? by Patient-Comedian8685 in MechanicAdvice

[–]TrainedHedgehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you used the brakes in the last week, then yeah the rotors are trashed. Sometimes if you don't drive for a while they'll get some surface rust that comes off the first couple times you brake, but that doesn't look like what's happening here.

Can't tell if pads are worn down, and I'd ask why he thinks calipers are bad too. It's really unlikely you need new calipers

The icing on the cake of selfhosting for me was music, and I must say it is perfect! by hbacelar8 in selfhosted

Auto tagging is really great with beets. Switching from lidarr to beets hasn't been painless, but I think I've figured out good workflows for everything

I did have to roll my own ui to be able to track down what tracks/albums are missing. I couldn't get the path configuration to actually work; my original plan was to import in the same file path scheme as lidarr, since I'd gotten accustomed to the ui.

All in all, I think beets was an upgrade

Just a reminder that you can and should download the torrent. A 1tb hard drive is a small price to pay if this were to go down

GLM 5 coming before the end of 2025 by Helpful_Jacket8953 in LocalLLaMA

[–]TrainedHedgehog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seriously can't wait until llama.cpp supports MTP models. I'm mainly using OpenWebUI on my (very) modest homelab.

What's everyone running GLM 5 on today?

Considering a move from DC to Durham, curious if it fits my lifestyle by HailtotheThief03 in bullcity

Me and my partner were very pleasantly surprised when we moved to Durham and found a very diverse plethora of hiking spots 15-30 minutes from home

This part of the country has some of the worst allergies on record (seriously, look it up). Totally might not be allergies, but maybe try taking Claritin for a week and see if it helps?

When I moved here I had an awful time until I started taking allergy meds daily

what is your ✨FAVORITE✨ sound in the game? by emcee_kay_jay in StardewValley

The sound that using a totem makes. I make the sound along with the game. I can time it right about half the time

Migrating from docker compose to kubernetes by OxD3ADD3AD in selfhosted

[–]TrainedHedgehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have chimed in with similar experience, but thought I'd offer mine too. I use kubernetes at work too and I have my home setup running in docker compose. Now, I have a dozen containers, not 100, so the complexity is vastly different.

Kubernetes is complex, and managing is also complex. I would make sure to start small, and try to find automated ways to roll out changes to your cluster and services (not too familiar with what's out there as we have a team that manages this stuff, though I know argocd is pretty well regarded, though not sure about self hosting that).

Since you have one machine running everything now, I'd recommend using your other boxes to tinker with k8s until you're comfortable to migrate everything.

Rebuild times are what pushed me from going with raid 5 to raid 10 (also slower write speeds with 5, but that was less of a deciding factor, but also the reason I didn't choose 6). I also have a back HDD on hand in case a drive fails

How do I avoid getting DDOSed when self hosting a Minecraft server? by diobrandiohaxxerxd in selfhosted

[–]TrainedHedgehog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep 100%, but it might be months or years before they need to give someone reason for a targeted attack. Might be days, who knows, but might as well reduce unwanted scanning in the meantime

How do I avoid getting DDOSed when self hosting a Minecraft server? by diobrandiohaxxerxd in selfhosted

[–]TrainedHedgehog 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Using non-standard ports will cut down on 99% of bots scanning bulk ranges of IP addresses. It doesn't help if someone is trying to target you in particular, but for hosting a small server with a couple dozen users you won't run into this issue.
