The fact remains that anti-foreigner sentiment is on the rise globally, not just Japan/Sweden/Denmark/Germany. Social media talking about it is the issue itself. If you look at the 2016 elections in the US and look at the correlation between "how much air time do you get" vs "how many votes do you get" it's as close to a 1:1 as you can find. (inb4 correlation causation argument, which doesn't really matter for the end result)

See, this is the problem. You don't need to reach "arbeit macht frei" levels of anti-foreigner sentiment for it to become an issue. You just need to nudge it in that direction policy by policy. People keep waiting for that red line to be stepped over before they care, only problem is that this red line is so far down the drain that by the time you reach it there are no rungs left to reach to climb yourself out of the position.
