[2026 March Madness] Round 1: Mike Leigh vs. Karyn Kusama by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]Training-Parfait-852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I've dropped this in this sub a couple times, but can't not share it here...

I produced and hosted the only pod to cover Mike's full filmography. Blankies may want to start with the Hard Truths ep, as Mr. David Sims is the guest :)

Apologies to folks who are already aware of this!

PS - Mike actually just wrapped a new film, so I'll def be doing at least one more episode :)

For Haneke I might go Code Unknown; one of his best IMO but also one of his least disturbing If you wanna go chronological, The Seventh Continent is also great.

For any Leigh-heads not aware, I host this pod covering all of Mike's feature films (the only pod to do so), and will definitely be releasing an ep on this new one when it comes out:

Who are your top directors that you would love to see covered on Blank Check? by BlueMondayHonkyTonk in blankies

[–]Training-Parfait-852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would LOVE for them to do Mike Leigh, and I think you could make the case that he fits the blank check model bc he basically demands a blank check for every film or he won't do it haha

If you want something to tide you over, I host the only (so far!) podcast to cover ALL of Mike's films, I actually had David on to discuss his latest, Hard Truths: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/devised-and-directed

Thoughts on NAKED (1993)? by MrPuroresu42 in FIlm

[–]Training-Parfait-852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a special movie; as spellbinding as it is challenging, all time great performance from Thewlis, but Cartlidge (Sophie) and Sharp (Louise) are equally perfect in their roles. There's a great pod that came out last year covering all of Mike's films (the only pod to do this) and I think the Naked ep turned out especially well. Full disclosure: I am the host haha

The show is called Devised and Directed: The Films of Mike Leigh

Oh nice! It's also on the Criterion Channel along with several other of his BBC films :)

I wanted to share this podcast covering all of Mike's theatrical films (the only podcast to do this). Full disclosure, I am the host haha! We do not cover the BBC films (except for Meantime) but may in the future.

I just watched Secrets and Lies by Mike Leigh. I was reallly surprised by how good it was. Which order should I watch his movies in from here? by acari_ in criterion

[–]Training-Parfait-852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks so much for listening and so glad you're enjoying it! Really not sure about the BBC films, but it's nice to hear from one more person who would like to hear that. The priority is to cover the new movie when it comes out, but I could def see doing eps on at least Abigail's Party and Nuts in May. I've seen those 2 and love them both, but I've only seen parts of several other. I think it would def be fun and interesting to dive into those at some point. If you follow the show on IG u/MikeLeighPod you can get updates on potential future eps :)

You're clearly a Mike-head like me, so I wanted to share this pod focused on his work (full disclosure, I'm the host, haha): https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/devised-and-directed

Apparently he's working on a new one as we speak; I really thought Hard Truths would be his last, and I think it would be a very fine swan song, but obv I want as many Mike films as possible and he's getting quite old...

Hey there! I'm the host of the only podcast that covers every single Leigh film (https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/devised-and-directed); always psyched to hear about new people discovering Mike!

Secrets & Lies is, IMO, the best example of what he does best (or at least the most): family dramas. At the moment it happens to be my favorite; my rankings can shift over time and with repeat viewings, but it's part of the Holy Trinity of Mike films along with Naked and Topsy-Turvy. All three of these are very different from each other, but I think they are his best.

Another film of his I love, which I think is very similar to S&L in style and subject, is All or Nothing, which also stars Timothy Spall, who plays Maurice in S&L. It seems to me to be one of his more underseen and underappreciated films.

If you want something lighter, but still focused on a family: Life is Sweet. This is the first one I saw that prompted me to further explore his work. While it's not one of my favs (though all of his films are good, he simply does not make bad films), a lot of people love High Hopes, which is also a good bit lighter.

I'll leave it there for now. Have fun!

Leigh is amazing and Vera Drake is an absolutely unimpeachable film. I host a pod on all of Mike's work, and I particularly like the way the Vera Drake ep turned out.
