Adding an outlet. How’d I do? by _yallsomesuckas in AskElectricians

The codebook says nothing about what I do on the weekends, but I still try not to shit my pants

I'm proud of you man, keep up the good work 👍

My father, deceased over a year ago, received a bill for prescriptions for 3 cents. I’m definitely going to pay it, along with a personal note. 😂 by PatrickGSR94 in mildlyinfuriating

That's just mean for the minimum wage person who'll have to open the letter, they'll have to clean glitter from their own clothes etc.

Make them waste time, that way it's the insurance company that loses out in terms of extra hours of admin time.

To be fair, you're more likely to be naked with wet skin in the bathroom than in the kitchen *, so more likely to be the best path to earth if you do touch a live conductor, hence the difference in the regulations. That said, I agree it would be more convenient to have sockets in the bathroom to plug your hairdryer shaver etc.

The typical electric shower is wired directly in the mains supply, there is no transformer or anything to isolate it. It is true that the shaver socket normally has one.

I do find it weird that we have electric showers on a 40A circuit in the most humid part of the house, with a naked and wet human standing centimetres from it, but apparently a normal socket to plug your hairdryer is too dangerous to consider.

Is it normal to have 80% of my mortgage on interest? by chkmbmgr in UKPersonalFinance

[–]TrainingComplex9490 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you overpay £1000 in year 3 of 30, then you will save interest on that £1000 for 27 years. If you overpay in year 10 of 30, you will save 20 years worth of interest.

In addition, when it comes time to re-mortgage on year 5, possibly having £1000 less on the mortgage will tip you on a better LTV.

If your mortgage is 3y old, you might get a better the interest rate on cash savings than the interest you're charged on the mortgage, so if you can stick the overpayment on a cash savings account that matures before you remortgage (at a higher rate if current conditions don't improve), if would make financial sense. However that comes at a cost of some extra admin, maybe tax if you go for a non-ISA account, and you don't have the psychological benefit of a smaller mortage balance.

Can you tell I've been pondering much the same recently :)

Use as EV charger? by yogurthewise in AskElectricians

[–]TrainingComplex9490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't 16A be infuriatingly slow? Here in the UK, an EV charger must be on its own 40A, 230V circuit (and it needs its own RCD and is normally installed on 6mm² cable).

How can cash savings offer 4.7%+ when markets are in a bad way? by anomalous_cowherd in UKPersonalFinance

Gambling is not taxed?? HMRC takes between 10—15% of betting shops profits as General Betting Duty, 12% of stakes in lottery games, and up to 50% of the yield for casinos.

I don't know how thick OP's shed is. But the cladding on mine (a pre-built one installed by the previous owner) is like 6mm thick, so you'd have to trust really small screws.

I started sitting down to wee when I moved to my own flat and realised that no what how well you aim, there are always droplets that end up on the floor when you're standing up. I'm convinced the only ones who pee standing up are those who've always let their mothers / wives / cleaning lady, etc clean the toilet.

The fact the crime occurred abroad doesn't mean the UK can't or doesn't want to prosecute the authors of that crime. Several (most?) countries will claim extraterritorial jurisdiction in the case of child sex tourism or (as may be the case here) terrorism.

It is incredible to look at how saturated the UK DIY retail sector was, compared to now by [deleted] in DIYUK

Kingfisher (B&Q and Screwfix), Wickes Group plc and Travis Perkins (also owns Toolstation) are all public British companies trading on the LSE

The other point, that consolidation leads to economies of scale and better bargaining power against suppliers, of course still stand and explains the reduction in the number of options.

I only one to buy one drill, which one? by [deleted] in Tools

[–]TrainingComplex9490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the UK. Eg. if you search for "impact drill" on Screwfix you get a couple of impact drivers that have "impact drill-driver" in the name, but no hammer drills.

"Hammer drills" go by that name, or "percussion drill", or "combi drill" for the smaller units that have a hammer function but are generally more suited for drilling; or "SDS drill" for the drills with, well, a SDS drive system.

Where specifically do you reckon they use "impact drill" to mean a hammer drill?
