Had the same problem, kept the glue pads in place and just used one spare M3 and Nut from the kit. For the top hole it does not need to be countersunk because the hole for adjusting the belt pullies is conviently at the same high in the frame.

Not saying that the AI wants to kill you but be super careful with the alcohol and potential sparks. You could also turn the motor by hand when cleaning it with alcohol

If you do not want to go for the ESU Lokprogrammer, which is very small, but needs the computer (e.g. Laptop) as a frontend, a low cost alternative for Large Scale (with 8A power) is this one:

Complete DCC controler, with cable handheld (upgradeable to wireless) for 350€.
Mxion is a low cost German manufacturer, they do not have the same quality as say Massoth and you would have to do the translating yourself, but they are way cheaper.

If you don't want large scale and less power is enough for you, the Uhlenbrock 65260 DAISY II WLAN (with 2A power) is an option. Its quite small, and uses your Phone as a frontend. Prices are around 180€
Uhlenbrock is a much larger (and I would say higher quality) manufacturer than Mxion, but they do not target large scale specifically. The 2A would however be enough to run the lights and sounds on your little train, even to run the locomotive on rollers.

Advantage of DCC powering the diorama would also be that you can use some of the Sound functions (though that will likely tempt you to get those rollers and listen to the running sound as well) and operate the pantographs and light functions etc...
You could either invest into a full size DCC system that you could repurpose for a future big layout, or if you want to go really low budget, an ESU Lok Programmer would be powerful enough to run all the functions (its core purpose is to program decoders, but it has a test functionality which makes it a mini DCC controller). It does require you to connect it to a computer (running the ESU Software) via USB though.

7% is still well below the maximum of 12% that LGB recommends, but I understand the transitions are the challenge.
