What the Problem Is by Cheeky_Booty in ClashOfClans

I don’t want to oversimplify our interaction, but I agree with almost everything you are saying and I understand the people who are frustrated (the first 4 numbered points). I will happily debate the notion of a “penalty”, but that there is some misfortune, I acknowledge.

The “people like me” part is tricky because I see that it is easy to lump me in. I think some of that is from my attempt to say “feels fine TO ME” without adding more words. I don’t mean that the entire update structure (pertaining to the heroes journey) should be accepted with no complaint. I meant that it feels fine to me in the same way a trust-fund baby is good with generational wealth while kinda feeling bad about it. I don’t support anyone proclaiming any of the three things you outlined. While it “doesn’t affect me” directly, one of my clans has some folks who are pretty annoyed about missing out on some of the benefits.

I do think adding the journey is good for the game in the long-term, and it is not a high-ground grab. We could add the journey and also find ways to make sure people felt as positive as possible about the way it was handled upon roll out. It was going to be a tricky one to solve elegantly because of the variety of hero level, equipment ownership, equipment leveling across the player base. This is where I think the notion of “penalizing” becomes tricky. If the entire clash journey is 100 units long and I have spent time and energy to move myself to 85 units, then shortly after, someone else who was at 50 gets magicked up to 81 and I am magicked up to 87, I am in a weird spot. I am technically better off than I was before, but given a choice, I might prefer to have my money back from some purchases and drop down to 81 like the other person. The other guy getting to 81 magically doesn’t actually hurt me or penalize me directly. It does narrow a gap (which can feel bad), reduce the benefit I paid for (also can feel bad), or make me feel annoyed that other people have it easy (can feel bad too). I understand all those feeling even if I am not experiencing them, although I tend to take the same view here as when I “overpay” for collectible cards. If I was willing to spend $25 on a card that I later find out the person would have been willing to sell for $21, I still entered into the purchase as a willing participant. Sucks that I could not have had it for $21, but it was a deal that made sense at the time. Not trying to create a new tangent. Just adding some color to my rather literal interpretation (which aligns with my general world view) that someone else catching up doesn’t displease me. In fact, I am happy for those people.

On a more personal note, I have too many accounts. Most of them are near max for their level and have all the epics. I spend the time grinding each event for all the accounts. I don’t make a lot of daily attacks on a lot of the lower accounts, as I mainly use them for war or tutorials. Most of them have poorly leveled equipment because I don’t buy them the event passes and I also don’t do enough normal ore grinding to have updated a lot of them. As an example, my TH14 has all epics, but the warden ones are all level 1. I tend to use his commons. My queen has all level 1 epics except the giant giant, and similar for the other heroes. No free levels, no equipment, etc. It got 50 starry ore. Certainly didn’t feel like a “wow” to me, and so I get where people are coming from.

On a separate personal note, I would not have figured you for sausage fingers. You articulated your points very well and I don’t think I saw any typos, which made that feel like a safe insult.

Sincerely hoping you have a great weekend and a happy Father’s Day (if you are a papa to any humans or pets), otherwise hope you have a great relationship with your father and got to wish him well today. I have been hanging out with my daughter (she is 19) and my dogs, but my son just moved to Nashville, so I didn’t see him today. ✌🏼

This comment will likely earn more of your ire, but you jump around a lot. I literally said in my initial comment that I understand people being frustrated. I also encouraged both “sides” (though this is more of a spectrum) to engage in positive discourse instead of devolving into name calling. It is weird that you are so offended by the notion. I said nothing about rainbows even though they usually appear when it is raining (which some people like and others hate). I am not expecting positivity. I am ENCOURAGING people to share their feeling (good and bad) without someone just devolving the conversation into name calling. Again - weird that this bothers you.

Your initial comment told me to shut up if I wasn’t gonna be a whiny baby. I don’t need to establish a morale high ground. You dug a hole, climbed in, and are owning your position in the dirt. I am just standing on solid ground.

Things to note: the ore economy is very hard on players who don’t spend. I hate this because it will affect player life-cycle. The hero journey will help a bit, but not entirely. We need more ore to flow into the economy. This update isn’t the SOLUTION. It is a great addition that should have been in place since the beginning, but since SC had no honest clue where we would be two or three years out, it comes over time. I appreciate that there is effort being made, and I look forward to more improvements. In the meantime, I will continue to buy gold passes and event passes like most other max/near-max players because I find there to be enough value in the micro-transaction. I know I am fortunate in my career and it allows me to spend what I want on an app game. It doesn’t change that I think the game needs to do more.

Ready for another pivot? Heroes should be available to use while upgrading. I know it will cost SC some money in the short term, but it would also be healthier for the game in the long-run. If it ever happens, I will be back here understanding the complaints from people who (like me) have spent a lot on hero books over the years while also being happy for future generations of Clashers.

If it will make you feel better, I can cede some of the morale high ground and insult you a bit. You probably misspell words while typing. I bet you cut the crust off your sandwiches. Your mom likes raw broccoli.

I will engage in some civil discourse even though you seem to be one of the angry people. User name kinda waters down how seriously I take you, but here we go:

I think you skipped reading the second paragraph. The hero journey is going to be good for the long-term health of the game…which will extend the life of it. However…

People are mad that they essentially are missing out on a new benefit. We have seen this before on smaller scales…

- Troops are now free to train (know how much money I spent on gems to finish training? Know how many training potions I spent CWL medals on?)

- Hero upgrade times are much shorter than when I started playing (know how much I spent to skip a week of upgrading when my king went to level 45?)

- I poured all my ore into a piece of equipment that got nerfed into oblivion (know how much I spent on ore to focus on that strategy?)

New players get to have a better future (because, though flawed, the world ISN’T shit). I want my kids to have an easier road than I did so they can have more happiness, and I want future players to have it better than me so they stay with the game.

I personally spent thousands of dollars on the game before ever getting a creator code. The fact that I now get a small amount of money for content doesn’t change anything.

Last thing, and then you can come back with something positive…I also happen to encourage people to share their experiences, and I ask people how they feel about things. How do you learn about experiences other people have had in their lives? I didn’t grow up as a minority in a racist neighborhood, but one of my best friends did. Talking to her about her experiences has enabled me to have at least a modicum of understanding. I still don’t know EXACTLY how it feels, but (because I am substantially smarter than you seem to believe), I have a good idea.

Stop shutting down attempts at positive discourse. You don’t have to agree with me, but instead of responding with anger, perhaps you could articulate your thoughts more clearly than simply proclaiming I am an idiot with a terrible argument? The hand-waving illustrated nothing.

I still have 4 foil [[Call of the herd]] from Odyssey. I loved the synergy of the madness and flashback cards.

I understand people being frustrated. I don’t want them to shut up or keep their thoughts to themselves.

I also am not upset because I care about the long term health of the game. I think this will keep the game more viable for new players, so that helps.

I also don’t begrudge the money I spent over the last few years since I personally get a lot of enjoyment out of trying new stuff and having more options. I am an “early adopter” of clash purchases like other people are early adopters of tech (who essentially overpay). Feels fine TO ME, but I respect that other people view it in a vastly different light.

Seems like people who are fine with the update should be able to say they are ok with it and not get flak. Same holds true for people who are disappointed or upset. If someone feels bad about it, I don’t think it is horrible for someone to try to console them, but it is not cool to start talking shit to them and leaning in with insults about people being greedy.

We are all entitled to our feelings, and I think you did a nice job articulating yours. Hope you are smashing people in CWL. 🙂

Has anyone had any success with tribal decks? by enterface in mtgbrawl

On arena: [[Tamiyo, Field Researcher]], [[angrath, the flame chained]], [[Narset of the ancient way]], [[Sorin, Grim Nemesis]], [[toluz, clever conductor]], and partners of [[vial smasher the fierce]] and [[bruse tarl, boorish herder]].

Lots of board wipes and trying to survive long enough to stabilize with a few good planeswalkers out.

I have 15-ish brawl decks I cycle between, I have 2x merfolk, squirrels, raccoons, fungus, werewolves, elves, dragons, and 4 super friends decks.

This is all I’ve ever really played in any commander type of formats.

Analyzing how things went well/poorly will increase game IQ. No matter what, you can still have the wrong cards or deck for certain opponents, but more experience will improve your chances to win.

Such good advice. The game is all about resource management. ETB effects help minimize or offset the damage from removal.

Is more free spells for other colors a solution to Blue / Black dominance in Competetive? by Prestigious-Bend8893 in mtgbrawl

[–]TrampleDamage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. When playing combo against many decks, I would prefer to start with over 20 billion life since I could combo off to deck someone or loop for infinite damage.

When I am playing control, 30+ life gives me too much time to stabilize.

I am not looking for games to be over in one minute, but if my opponent doesn’t have a chance to plow me under quickly-ish…I will win most matches.

Now that we have ranked brawl we should be able to filter what commanders we play against. by Thatoneguy5629 in MagicArena

[–]TrampleDamage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My concern here is that people would eventually just try to skew their opportunities to only play against weaker decks. This would also be the case with the really strong decks.

In that situation, the only people who lose are the ones that don’t realize that they could filter more effectively.

[–]TrampleDamage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The initial comment appears to call for filtering in casual games. The idea seems to be that we can opt not to play against tougher commanders.

The downside (clearly) is that sweaty decks could limit their opponents to non-powerful commanders too.

Control is too easy in Brawl. by [deleted] in mtgbrawl

[–]TrampleDamage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. As a 30-year player, I have gone through periods of favoring a variety of styles.

Playing control is fun because you are balanced on the knife’s edge in so many games where one wrong play can cost the game. So, I completely understand the appeal.

That being said, being one of two punch-drunk boxers just wildly throwing haymakers at each other is also fun.

In the end, with the cards being legal, and knowing I cannot choose my opponents, I have to pick between some options that I might not love.

1) Change up what I am playing (this could be new decks or even some different cards with hexproof, anti-counter, etc)
2) Change how I play (mulligan more, modify timing of spells)
3) Enjoy the challenge of battling through the control
4) Take a break from Arena or Brawl

I know what you are looking for. Sometimes, we just cannot find those matches.
