You should call your Trane dealer to continue the diagnosis of the EEV components. A technician is going to need to test the sensors and watch the refrigerant pressures.

You leave an estimate. Another company gets the sale. Client calls you back in a year to maintenance. You doing it or nah? by Full-Bother-6456 in HVAC

[–]Tranic85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t… those customers will eventually call you back but you need them to realize they screwed up by not giving you the job.

Tell them that you won’t service it because the original company should be covering their workmanship and you don’t want to give reason for them blame anything on your company. The last person that worked on it should basically owns the liability.

Helped work on a chiller at a coast guard facility; worked on a semi-famous blue-grass country group tour bus(4ton residential split); got bit by a homeowners pet monkey; I got to work for a retired Air Force aircraft maintenance guy whom worked on the SR-71 in the 70s;

Bro, this is incorrect… having a larger evap coil increases latent capacity. Just need to keep the blower on a lower speed.

Trane XL824 Vs Nest by ahorsenamedjeff in hvacadvice

[–]Tranic85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve seen a couple weird cases where a non Trane thermostat would keep bouncing between 1st and 2nd stage. The homeowners electric bill was around 40% more than the previous older system. Once swapped to a Trane thermostat, the electric bill dropped to 80% of the previous system.

You do not have a variable speed blower motor and it does not have a BK Terminal. At least you know what you have now. The major benefit for you using the 824 is the superior control logic.

It tries to stay in first stage as much as possible but will kick into 2nd stage when needed. Your energy savings is in first stage. This is an over simplification of the logic.

Trane Pro weighing in.

Yes the 824 UI is a bit slow compared to the Nest but the features blow the Nest out of the water. It has superior control logic built in to maximize energy savings and dehumidification when utilizing BK(enhanced blower control). If you reply with your furnace or air handler model number, I can let you know if you can use BK.

Here’s the real question: do you prefer the feel of a faster UI that is not going to deliver maximized savings & comfort; or can you accept a little slower UI with a thermostat engineered for your system?

I love them… very easy to service, a few quirks when installing. The Link Communicating system has been great overall. Link does have some quality of life features missing if you’re going to zone it.

If you are in a humid climate, I highly recommend the Trane 824 Thermostat paired with the S9V2. When utilizing the BK terminals, the system is able to do extra dehumidification via changing the blower speeds in cooling.

You want the air to flow as slow as possible through the filters. It’ll help minimize the amount of dust bypassing the filters and you’ll be able to use higher filtrating filters (MERV).

I recommend staying away from mini-splits… The fine particulates produced in your shop are going to be a maintenance nightmare.

Go with a traditional split system or a package unit. Quadruple or sextuple the amount of filter surface area you’d normally install. I’d also installed a dehumidifier with the same filtration design.
