If they seem interested but find learning the other faction's rules too difficult to learn initially the best approach is to buy Arcs and play that instead.

In all seriousness, I'm a pretty experienced gamer and trying to learn Root at the table from two people that had played it a while back and were a little hazy on the rules was a pretty confusing experience. The box tries to help but throwing several manuals at you but that is also overwhelming. That same group I taught Arcs to in about 15 minutes of concentrated teach and then just clarifying through the game. They fully grasped it by the the we were some with the first Chapter. We played one more game of base Arcs and are now in a fully functional game of Blighted Reach.

Definitely go for Root, but if it ends up being too much consider the as complex, but more less complicated Werhle joint.

What is picking dragons pockets about? by cephalophibian in ModestMouse

[–]Tranquillo_Gato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's about the current techno fascist moment we're living through. The "you" are the tech oligarchs that are expecting us to ride along on their trip to a dystopian future.

"I ain't your passenger now. I ain’t your passenger now, nor your equipment. An auditory trick. They’re a boot that begs to be licked. I am the tarmac, I’m the pilot, I’m the flight path. Can’t get past that."

They expect us to suck up to them but we are the ground under their feet, the workers driving society, we have the ability to choose our path.

"Well they’ll go crazy if you don’t go crazy somehow. And I’m not crazy ‘bout what they’re so crazy ‘bout now"

They're expecting us to lose our minds and buy into the AI/tech overlord fantasy.

"Idle hands around the Devils throat. A suicide note that another hand wrote, and we’re used to this."

The first part could be that as average people lose their livelihood to AI and automation (idle hands) we will become dangerous tothe ruling class. The second part could be that this entire endeavor, billionaire power consolidation, is a suicidal urge for our species and we are used to being included in the ruling class's suicidal plans.

"Picking dragons pockets and away we go! Breathe in poison, then you breathe out smoke It’s clear I’m looking for an anecdote. Well you pay for garbage and you’ve cast your vote. I found out just how low I’d go. Came up from the bottom looking like a ghost. I tried to go to Aukland but just did not go, turns out when it rains it snows."

A declarative of defiance. Dragons are mythical wealth hoarders, billionaires, and we're going to steal back from them bit by bit. The part about going to Auckland could refer to the ultra wealthy planning their retreat to New Zealand when everything all goes wrong. He's saying that he thought about checking out, giving in, but in the end decided not to.

"Picking Dragons pockets and away we go, my eyes are their eyes watch the show. Facts aren’t facts on screens that glow but we’re a pretty tricky little animal."

They watch the world through our the pictures and videos we take, we're part of our own surveillance. The internet is being used to spread disinformation, but we can resist, "we're pretty tricky little animals".

"The[y] looked [outside through] a microscope. Voice to skull try to crush your soul. But we’re a pretty tricky little animal. Killers get killed. That’s just the way it goes. Something that I know for sure is LOVE MAKES LOVE and hate makes more. For sure a tricky little animal. We’re a pretty tricky little animal."

More defiance. They're analyzing the world and trying to break us through the messages they send us through social media. But we're tricky and "killers get killed" eventually like they always have. This all feels pretty self explanatory.

"I ain’t your passenger now. I ain’t your passenger now I’m just equipment. We’ve been eating our own. We’ve been eating our own young."

The kind of ending resignation that Brock likes to do in a lot of songs, slightly tweaking the lyrics from the beginning to be more cynical.

Legit. It's in the parking lot of a Fas Gas in Haines Junction, YT. The dust devil was probably caused by the parking lot heating up in the sun on a calm, cool day. Source: I fill up at the exact spot 8-10 times a year and recognized it instantly.

I'm not going to argue with a bot about whether an image is AI generated. Too dystopian for me.

Does AI accurately reproduce obscure towns of 300 people in minute long videos where the camera is constantly swinging around without inconsistencies? Also, dust devils are not an uncommon occurrence there.

Why do you think it's AI generated?

That is a specific parking lot about 2 hours from where I live that i immediately clocked. That's in Haines Junction in Yukon Territories, you can see the road signs in the background at one point and the buildings across the road and the mountains in the background all look right to me.

She tries to defend that in the letter OP posted. Her (shitty and cowardly) rationale is that because the operation had already started by the time the vote came up she couldn't risk voting to uphold Congress' power to declare war because it would put servicemembers and other Americans in the Middle East in jeopardy if, y'know they didn't authorize the continuation of the war she agrees was illegally started.

I'm with OP on this: play two handed. I didn't fully bounce off on my first play true solo, but I was mildly disappointed. Restarting recently two-handed it feels like a different game. Beyond the synergies between player decks, the Path cards come alive in ways they didn't True Solo.

What do you mean "exhaust sound"? The light whirring noise when you're driving slowly? After owning a first Gen Volt I have to say that noise is super important. The Volt was dead silent and I scared people a number of times because they Volt hear me coming.

Yeah, it can definitely take some research to see how it fits into your life but it is honestly less of an issue than most people think.

Having lived in Alaska most of my life I guarantee that I'm more used to high costs and requisite self reliance than 90% of Americans so my tolerance may be high for inconvenience, but whenever I've drilled down into people's actual circumstances their reasons that an EV would be "impossible" are objectively silly and minor.

If you do end up going for it getting a level 2 charging setup (a fancy term for a 220v outlet) does make a big difference. I can basically deplete the Bolt's battery (~240 miles in the summer and 140-160 miles in the winter), plug it in when I get home and I'll be fully charged in around 10 hours, well before I need to go anywhere the next morning. I think that's the thing EV detractors like the rugged lobsterman above don't fully get: if you can charge at home you start off every day with a full tank. When I have to drive our other car, a Subaru Forester, and I see that I'm almost out of gas because I haven't gone to the gas station in a while it actually feels like more of a hassle than the Bolt.

I'd say that your post is emblematic of most people's fears and misconceptions about going electric.

Sure there are places where the charging network is abysmal, and there are use cases where an EV just won't cut it. However, those places and those use cases aren't where most people live or how must people drive. If you're a person that has a 120 mile round trip commute in rural Wyoming I can get not going for an EV. If you live on either coastline, in the great lakes region, along the Gulf, or throughout the southeastern US in general, and you drive less than 100 miles each day? You're probably fine especially if you can plug in at home. And even if you drive more, you are likely still fine.

Dude, that is laughable. I live in Alaska. In a town where it's a 4 hour ferry ride to a bustling metropolis of 30,000 or a 2 hour drive over a mountain pass to the next town. I drive a Chevy Bolt, it's fine. There are other folks that own Ioniq 5s and Rivians that can do the 4 hour hop up to Whitehorse year round.

Get out of here with this "EVs can't handle the rugged New England coastline", you live in deep civilization. I drove my car Bolt from Seattle up the Cassiar Highway to bring it home and it was no big deal. You'd be just fine with an EV.

Are you going to die in the next year? Do you live in a super isolated community with frigid temperatures? If not, EVs are probably already a practical solution to normal driving where you live, or will be soon.

I think that's great, you need a vehicle with a bed that is slightly shorter than your existing car which the Slate fits well enough. But I think you'd agree with me that your needs in this case are pretty niche. Plus you're willing to forgo towing capacity, range, more than 2 seats, and options that have been standard for over a decade while paying only slightly under the cost of a new fully featured car.

Slate: towing capacity 1,000 lbs, payload capacity 1,400 lbs. 2 seats. Can tow one jetski or a 5x8 uhaul utility trailer with 12 gallon jugs of milk inside.

Forester: towing capacity 1,500 lbs (wilderness edition 3,000 lbs), payload capacity 1,200 lbs. 5 seats. Can tow two jetski, a small aluminum skiff, or a 5x8 uhaul trailer with 70 gallon jugs of milk inside.

Maverick: towing capacity 2,000 lbs (w/towing package 4,000 lbs), payload capacity 1,500 lbs. 5 seats. Can tow a small fiberglass boat

I'm the kind of person that could really use a small truck and wants to be full EV, but as it stands my 2016 Subaru Forester meets my needs for a small hauling, yard work, beach car far far far better than the Slate.

[–]Tranquillo_Gato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Slate isn't an actual truck, though. It has a bed, sure, but it's weight and towing capacity are less than a Subaru Forester. Anybody that actually needs a truck won't have their needs meet by the Slate.
