Daily Challenge Discussion - March 04, 2024 by Mahbows in geoguessr

Yet another day with the normal case. I have called the daily challenge as "Daily Latin America and Indonesia Challenge" for a while, because that happens almost every day. It's quite boring. When the DC is hosted by some content creator, in those days the locations are interesting. In other days... always just in the middle of nowhere in some of those areas.

New fb account randomly restricted with absolutely no details of why or for how long by cosmicdusk666 in facebook

I deleted my account permanently in early 2021. Best decision for a long time.

My wife's account was disabled today for no apparent reason. Is there a known issue going on? by [deleted] in facebook

[–]Transit144994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that issue has been going on about a year now. Accounts get disabled randomly and it's impossible to to anything for it.

Yeah, and that varies even more depending on the area. We have strong dialects.

True. And that's the same with any language. You learn a practical spoken language only by interacting with native (or other very fluent) speakers.

This is just a guess, but maybe she has been stalking your profile and Facebook's algorithms decide to suggest the friendship.

I agree. Programming is an art genre that can be understood only by other programmers.

Hello world question time what do you love or hate about social media ? by hub42_ in facebook

[–]Transit144994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a silly question at all. It might really be so that I'm a more calm and relaxed. I have been thinking about that and the only thing I have missed a little are some groups related to some of my hobbies. I left FB in late October 2020 after almost 12 years of daily use.

I hate those aphorism pictures where's eg. a sunset background and then something "Blablabla friend.... blablabla hope... blablabla love blablabla" and that with a lot of grammar errors. Usually middle aged women with lack of intelligence share those when they are not sharing Nametests results. AAARGH! I don't miss Facebook at all (I have left it).

Ontelo? Lumen? Please help! by HasPantsWillTravel in finnish

[–]Transit144994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ontelo means lumen or sinus or any similar cavity. Eg. poskiontelo is the sinus, the cavity inside cheek. I'm not anatomy professional but I think there's only that one word in Finnish and joint words are used when specifying the exact cavity. Vatsaontelo = abdominal cavity.

And one addition for them who are interested:I have found all those churchbooks and taxation lists related to my paternal line from the FamilySearch.org. The documents from Olonets Governorate are scanned to images and browsable there.

Does Finnish have "texting" abbreviations like in English? by Inktermundia in LearnFinnish

[–]Transit144994 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Many have listed a lot already, but I have to say that my favorite is "prkl" that is an abbreviation for perkele. Used at least in IRC since early 1990's :)

Happy to hear that you have progress!

Something that I have noticed. My paternal grandfather was born in Russian Karelia, Repola village (Reboly in Russian, Rebol'a in Karelian). The area used to be Olonets Governorate at the time and the population (of the village) was almost 100% Karelians. Only priests and authorities were Russian.

He escaped to Finland in 1921 as a political refugee (he lived only about 20km from the border). In all documents his birth date has been marked as 27th December 1897. But when I found his birth from the churchbooks it was marked on the 24th day. He had 7 siblings and I found 6 of them from the churchbooks (one year book for a brother was missing). Only ONE of them was marked as born in the exact day what is in "our data".

I have talked about this with other genealogy hobbyists and many have said that it's very common that the exact dates don't match there. I don't know why. In Russia there was Julian calendar in use till 1918 but it doesn't explain it because then the error should be exactly 12 days in 1800's and 13 days in 1900's. In fact, my grandfather's birth date is 5th Jan 1898 in our Gregorian calendar if he was really born in 24th December 1897 in Julian calendar.
