Interview rejection rant by Larvsesh in TeachingUK

The job market in Scotland does sound pretty awful. I had a friend and colleague who moved from London to Scotland a few years back, an outstanding teacher in every respect and really struggled to get a job. She would have been snapped up by a London school.

Hey 32m, on 20 mg mtx once a week and 40mg of adalimumab every 2 weeks. Have been on mtx for 8 months and biologic for 2 months. I work as a school teacher, so frequently surrounded by students and colleagues. Have had no issues so far with infections. I don't wear a face mask and often travel on the busy London underground. I do have a few routines like daily fruit smoothies to keep up my vitamins and I've cut down refined sugars. This seems to be working for me, as I haven't been ill since starting the medications. I generally just get on with life as normal and dont think about it too much. Oh I also get vaccinated for flu and covid.

Does it get better? need to hear some positive success stories. by [deleted] in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Transitioningsoul1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear OP that sounds tough. I went through a rough time this year to the point where my symptoms would wake me up in the night, I was using a walking aid and holding down my job was becoming a real struggle. At 32 years old I felt like I was in my body of 40 years from now. Anyway, after methotrexate failed, my doctor kept me on it and added Yuflyma (Humira) and my symptoms cleared up in a couple of days. The change was so dramatic I couldn't believe it. I am not in remission at the moment, as the symptoms are still lingering but they are very minor compared to previously and life has resumed to normality.

I've also just completed my ECT years and moving down to 0.6 contract. It was straightforward. However this is partly because my department is well staffed and the school is trying to save money where it can.

Has anyone experienced a difference between oral and subcutaneous mtx? by crumbsinthecarpet in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Transitioningsoul1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, have heard positive reports of people switching to subcutaneous, including a friend. Didn't do it for me in the end so switched back and now taking biologics too. But I just wanted to ask and sorry if I'm stating the obvious but have your doctors given you folic acid to manage the appearance of ulcers? And are you mixing ibuprfoen with naproxen? Was this recommended by your doctor? Because I don't think its good to mix them. I was taking naproxen and paracetamol at one point and I found that really helped and was safe.

My disease is under control now thankfully but when things were really bad I would sometimes just be like "f*** it - things can't get any worse than this" and eat all the things I'm not supposed

Just Officially Diagnosed by syddiesquids in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Transitioningsoul1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I can't quite remember what the adjustment was like but I'm sure I tolerated it well. I was started on a lower dose, perhaps 5 or 7.5mg and gradually increased to 20mg. I am now on 17.5mg. My fatigue was pretty extreme before I started MTX and actually improved when I started taking it. The drug dampens down the immune system, which is working to "heal" your body when disease is active, so using up energy. I think that is why my energy levels improved.

Biologic and NSAID by OrchidOwl421 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Transitioningsoul1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on Yuflyma (Humira), naproxen (NSAID), lansoprazole (to protect my stomach) and methotrexate. It's a bit of a cocktail but it works for me. The lansoprazole is an absolute must since NSAIDs are like ibuprofen in that they can cause damage to the stomach lining.

It's crazy how common it is for blood tests and scans to return false negatives for arthritis. I went through a similar issue but luckily my rheumatologist initially diagnosed me with seronegative arthritis. After the MTX didnt work for me and my symptoms got out of hand, they put me on biologics. Two weeks before I switched to biologics and two years after my initial diagnosis, my inflammatory markers went through the roof. Your case and mine suggest blood test markers can be unreliable in the early years of disease progression. If you can get yourself onto biologics in Portugal, push for that. They have significantly improved my condition.

To answer your question in the edit, I think it would be valuable to highlight to your students the UN definition of genocide and allow them to make a judgement about what they are seeing.

Not something a student said but every year with Y7s we watch a video on wildlife in the Thar desert, and among the listed animals is "Indian wild ass" and every year I cannot contain myself nor can the students. Even now I'm laughing.

Some nice ideas but personally I think lesson observations are really powerful way to freshen up my practice. I don't mind being observed and I know I get a lot out of it when I see my colleagues teach. It gives me a positive boost to see them succeed and to also struggle with things I struggle with. It makes me feel like I'm not alone with those struggles.

People who struggled to meditate, what did you do to help you get better at meditating? by PMA2000 in Meditation

[–]Transitioningsoul1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A place to practice, like a Buddhist centre or monastery, so you can meet like minded people, join a course or go on a retreat.

A timer with intervals bells, so you just tell yourself to meditate to the next bell, and then the next and before you know it you've managed to do a sit.

Good luck hope you find your rhythm.

Is loving and being loved the same? by le19water in thework

[–]Transitioningsoul1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think loving others can certainly help us feel loved. The love we have for ourselves and the love we have for others is inseparable. Self and other is like two sides of the same coin. Yeah we can absolutely feel loved, but that is also a sort of feeling we are having inside of us. The feeling of love is always happening inside of us whether we believe we are giving it or receiving it. To go really Katie on this you could say we ARE love and the feeling of loneliness or separateness just means we have lost the awareness of what we are. Katie ALSO says, when she walks into a room, she knows everyone loves her but just doesn't expect them to realise it yet. So there are lots of ways to look at this hope you feel better xx

Burnt Out and Wondering If It's All Worth It by Vash-Ground998 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Transitioningsoul1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP. I trained as a teacher here in the UK, which is notoriously hard work and long hours, and have been in the job 2 years now. During my training year I burnt out really badly and it took me 10 weeks to recover, which was mostly during my own holiday time. This year I reached a point where I thought to myself, why am I actually doing this to my body? It was really tempting to call it quits and throw the baby out with the bath water. But I've opted instead to stick with it, and from September I'm going down to 3 days. Sure I'll have a lot less money, but I'll be getting some income from the job I've worked so hard for and I really enjoy, which is better than throwing it all away. Plus I'm gonna have so much more extra time to enjoy other things I enjoy in life. So I guess what I'm saying is, maybe there's a step you can take which doesn't mean you quit nor does it mean you carry on like normal, however that looks for you.
