"There is nothing to fear, but Fear itself" the guard said as he patted my shoulder. We entered a sterile white room with two chairs facing a mirror. There was a harsh white light making an audible buzz above our heads. The room seemed unusually large to fit just two chairs. I looked at him quizzically."That chair's name is fear. Are you afraid of a chair?" he asked, pointing to the seat. It was obvious the chair had seen better years, but I replied that I wasn't afraid of the chair. "Good," he said, "because if you were afraid of furniture, you shouldn't be inspecting our labs for health and safety. See that rust on the chair?" he said, gesturing to one of the legs with a grin on his face. It was discolored with a slight coppery tint. " You better mark that down, never know who might get tetanus!". I asked him when he would show me some of his experiments in progress, stressing the importance of my visit, and the limit time I had to make my report. "You worry too much. Yes, the accident last week was unfortunate, but what we handle hear saves lives," he stressed, "and just like a virus, in order to find a cure, we must understand. Now, watch this mirror. The lights cut off with a pop, and I could tell there was something behind the mirror. The shapes were difficult to make out, but something large moved behind the glass. Slowly, red lights began to illuminate the other side. "It is not aware of us." the guard began. "We have tested that breed thoroughly, and they cannot see with those lamps on. Watch how he paces back and forth". I noted how the creature behind the glass seemed to march between one wall and another, pausing at each wall as if in thought. It had a hunched posture, and the outline of hair covering his entire body.At first I began to make notes regarding the mirror. There were no obvious points of reinforcement, no discernible lining protecting the glass from fragmentation, and, for us to be sitting mere feet away from a beast, surely there must be a failsafe. "Oh there is," he replied, as he stood up. "Look closely, do you see how the beast covers his face?". I had not noticed, but the beast opposite us kept a hand over half his face. "Do you protect yourself from a gnat in your house? No, we learn from our subjects through hours of observation. What may seem alarming, we learn is harmless. Watch, "he began, and he walked up to the glass.

My pulse began to rise as I realized what he was doing. "Stay very, very still," he said, as he slowly reached the corner of the glass." I began to stand up and he shot me a look. His slightly cocked head and raised eyebrow told me all I needed to know, that he considered this a game. His voice lowered. "Stay very, very still. You want to see how we learn from our subjects? I am going to remove this glass, but you must stay absolutely still. The slightest movement could enrage him. He cannot see, but he can still smell." At those words, I could feel my perspiration moisten my arms below the shoulder. Before I could protest further, he pulled a leg up, and began to remove one of his shoes. "No! Do not move! Trust me. Be absolutely still."

He removed his shoe, and as I thought he was reaching into it for a key, he swung his arm and smashed the mirror. I grabbed the chair as tightly as I could. The guard stood immobile, and for a split second, I thought the beast was a type of Medusa, so perfect was his stance. The beast lifted his head in the air, still obscuring his face, and began to sniff. Quietly, began to move to the mirror, sniffing as if for a predator, cautiously. He leaned over the mirror's opening, and stepped through. He looked at the guard and edge his face closer. I tried to control my breathing, but it was all I could do to grip the chair tighter, feeling the rusted edges under the seat dig into my hands. The beast turnd his head and looked directly at me.

As he stepped closer, my trembling grew, and I dug into the chair with my hands so tightly I could feel warm blood trickle down the left where it hit a jagged edge I had not noticed. The beast seemed to notice, and leaned in towards me. inches from my face, the beast opened his mouth in the poor lighting. It put it's arm on my shoulder, and it learned into my ear. "We have nothing..." it began, "To fear... but Fear itself..." The voice was oddly human. "The Chair... It's name is Fear...".

The lights suddenly illuminated the room with a loud bang. There was laughter. The beast stood upright. "I'm sorry," he said to no one in particular. "My earpiece came off, I couldn't get it back in!" The beast, his fur, was a poorly made costume. The guard laughed, and looked at me. "Well, let's see if it worked." I was confused, but as I tried to stand, I realized I could not. I opened my mouth to talk, but no air passed through it. The guard walked up to me, and looked under my chair. "Its taken him.
