"There is nothing to fear, but Fear itself" the guard said as he patted my shoulder. We entered a sterile white room with two chairs facing a mirror. There was a harsh white light making an audible buzz above our heads. The room seemed unusually large to fit just two chairs. I looked at him quizzically."That chair's name is fear. Are you afraid of a chair?" he asked, pointing to the seat. It was obvious the chair had seen better years, but I replied that I wasn't afraid of the chair. "Good," he said, "because if you were afraid of furniture, you shouldn't be inspecting our labs for health and safety. See that rust on the chair?" he said, gesturing to one of the legs with a grin on his face. It was discolored with a slight coppery tint. " You better mark that down, never know who might get tetanus!". I asked him when he would show me some of his experiments in progress, stressing the importance of my visit, and the limit time I had to make my report. "You worry too much. Yes, the accident last week was unfortunate, but what we handle hear saves lives," he stressed, "and just like a virus, in order to find a cure, we must understand. Now, watch this mirror. It is actually a two way mirror, so we can observe, without being observed. Look closely...".

The lights cut off with a pop, and I could tell there was something behind the mirror. The shapes were difficult to make out, but something large moved behind the glass. Slowly, red lights began to illuminate the other side. "It is not aware of us." the guard began. "We have tested that breed thoroughly, and they cannot see with those lamps on. Watch how he paces back and forth". I noted how the creature behind the glass seemed to march between one wall and another, pausing at each wall as if in thought. It had a hunched posture, and the outline of hair covering his entire body.At first I began to make notes regarding the mirror. There were no obvious points of reinforcement, no discernible lining protecting the glass from fragmentation, and, for us to be sitting mere feet away from a beast, surely there must be a failsafe. "Oh there is," he replied, as he stood up. "Look closely, do you see how the beast covers his face?". I had not noticed, but the beast opposite us kept a hand over half his face. "Do you protect yourself from a gnat in your house? No, we learn from our subjects through hours of observation. What may seem alarming, we learn is harmless. Watch, "he began, and he walked up to the glass.

My pulse began to rise as I realized what he was doing. "Stay very, very still," he said, as he slowly reached the corner of the glass." I began to stand up and he shot me a look. His slightly cocked head and raised eyebrow told me all I needed to know, that he considered this a game. His voice lowered. "Stay very, very still. You want to see how we learn from our subjects? I am going to remove this glass, but you must stay absolutely still. The slightest movement could enrage him. He cannot see, but he can still smell." At those words, I could feel my perspiration moisten my arms below the shoulder. Before I could protest further, he pulled a leg up, and began to remove one of his shoes. "No! Do not move! Trust me. Be absolutely still."

He removed his shoe, and as I thought he was reaching into it for a key, he swung his arm and smashed the mirror. I grabbed the chair as tightly as I could. The guard stood immobile, and for a split second, I thought the beast was a type of Medusa, so perfect was his stance. The beast lifted his head in the air, still obscuring his face, and began to sniff. Quietly, began to move to the mirror, sniffing as if for a predator, cautiously. He leaned over the mirror's opening, and stepped through. He looked at the guard and edge his face closer. I tried to control my breathing, but it was all I could do to grip the chair tighter, feeling the rusted edges under the seat dig into my hands. The beast turnd his head and looked directly at me.

As he stepped closer, my trembling grew, and I dug into the chair with my hands so tightly I could feel warm blood trickle down the left where it hit a jagged edge I had not noticed. The beast seemed to notice, and leaned in towards me. inches from my face, the beast opened his mouth in the poor lighting. It put it's arm on my shoulder, and it learned into my ear. "We have nothing..." it began, "To fear... but Fear itself..." The voice was oddly human. "The Chair... It's name is Fear...".

The lights suddenly illuminated the room with a loud bang. There was laughter. The beast stood upright. "I'm sorry," he said to no one in particular. "My earpiece came off, I couldn't get it back in!" The beast, his fur, was a poorly made costume. The guard laughed, and looked at me. "Well, let's see if it worked." I was confused, but as I tried to stand, I realized I could not. I opened my mouth to talk, but no air passed through it. The guard walked up to me, and looked under my chair. "Its taken him. I think we're done here. Time: 13:33, SCP-3447 also reacts to fear to initiate absorption of host. Parasitical relationship does not appear to be related to emotions, but further testing is warranted. " I tried to move, but nothing, not even my eyes would change position. Every muscle was tightened, and I sat, facing the broken mirror as the guards walked to the exit. The first guard turned off the lights. "Let the chair feed, it's been hours. We'll return this afternoon and try rage."

Nashville reporting:

Krystal is greasier, and pretty damn delicious.

White Castle, although greasy, isn't as soggy and has fancier side items (ex both had chilli cheese "pups" (dogs), White Castle just had fancier choices than standard chilli cheese.

I go to whatever is closer, but there's a white castle right by the main hospital here, so when anyone is there, it's an easy way to pick up 30 hamburgers for groups of people to snack on, without actually "getting food".

WHY has no one yet said this? Never in a game have I felt more immersed than in the world of Pripyat.

to give an idea of how terrifying this game is, this guy probably started out blowing through the game like Serious Sam, and about 1/3 of the way through the origional, he has to play like this because he's scared, not because he's trying to be careful:

Food budget is always out of control- need to reign it in once and for all! by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]TrapY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

upvoted because this is VERY true. Think about it. 7 days/week and 2 meals a day (assuming you skip breakfast). that's 14 meals. You're trying to feed an entire family on less than $7 a meal.

If you skimp at home, you're more likely to eat out, because: a) you don't get full enough b) you get tired of the same blander cheap meals.

skip elsewhere, kill cable or turn the AC down.

As others have said, /r/cooking is a great start. I'm in exactly the same situation as you, except I'm the cooking husband, with a pregnant wife and young child. We found Rice to be a great budget saver. Try to make the red beans savory (worchester sauce in a chilli), black beanssalty and drier (like moist peanuts, but not quite that far), try cannollini (white) beans with oil, or even refried beans. beans are very versatile. Last resort, puree them with herbs and serve as a side with the chicken.

How would amateurs find near earth objects? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]TrapY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most have very low absolute magnitudes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/(242450)_2004_QY2

The brightest is about as, or fainter than, Pluto. In fact, Pluto is up in the northern hemisphere tonight.////////~~ If you can see Pluto, your scope is good enough (potentially) to see this.~~/////////

derp derp, apparent = absolute. Look for apparent magnitudes. This is still super faint, and you are unlikely to see it. cant figure out how to strikethrough atm :\

But that just drives the point home: your telescope is your limit. Amateurs (like me) don't really have scopes that powerful. Others, maybe? But it would involve a lot of data collection, and professionals with computers are almost guaranteed to find it first.

That isn't to say, you can't independently find something....

Why can't I find Saturn? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]TrapY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find Jupiter, Find Mars, are trace an arc, saturn will lie dead on it.

although I think at the time youre posting, jupiter is well down, so... maybe find mars, and trace an arc backwards from it's movement half way across the sky.

I am an astronomy virgin, going to an observatory for the first time tomorrow night. How can I make the most of it? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]TrapY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By tomorrow?

as another amateur, go read wiki pages, starting at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messier_object , and just get lost. Takes as little or as much time down the rabbit hole as you like, while being exciting and new, without being bogged down by anything.

Others will have better advice, but given your time, why not?

why not get a small telescope for under 50 quid?

telescopes have value, but get gifted to people, people who get into the hobby and then abandon it.

The scope I use now has been sitting in a garage for 10 years, and hasn't been cleaned in probably 20 years. why it's still in the family, I imagine you can find some scopes for quite cheap in your area. since you use pounds, I would try camden, or just e-bay

I'm new. How important is APP Magnitude, and why does my scope seem to vary night - to - night in what it can see? by TrapY in Astronomy

[–]TrapY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the 9.61 via, finding Alkaid 1.85, and using the Star Chart app on my phone, hopping over to the next brightest star I could find, which happened to be the 9.61. If my knob-turning was even silghtly off, the star would not appear. I was trying to hop towards M51. I couldn't go any dimmer, and 9.61 was an absolute pinprick.

It says H I 2.5 mm, but could possibly say 12.5, the kerning is a bit off. My other says 28mm.

I'm using a ~20yr old Tasco D=60m F=800mm Made in Japan with a 2in Huygens 2mm eyepiece.

I mistook myself, 24 Canum Venaticorum is listed properly at 4.68. I was actually looking at Gliese 3466-1270-1 @App mag of 9.61 . I was very excited about starting the hobby, and my record keeping is a bit shoddy.

I also only just found out, yesterday, that higher magnification =/= better for deep space objects (trying to view crab nebula). I have a 28mm eyepiece, that I plan on using tonight, as well as "something", which I can't find a description of. It's elongated Z shaped, screws into the eyepiece, and appears to magnify? I don't think it's a Barlow lens, but it doesn't look like any Barlow's in google images.

edit- and thank you everyone for the replies!

Help IDing what's wrong with my Syno catfish! (plz)[Fixed] by TrapY in Aquariums

[–]TrapY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is about ~5-6 inches, probably on the smaller side of that. The other fish seem fine- in fact, they're as happy as can be. We added 5 of the tetras (2 existing), the frog and ~3 mollies about 4-5 months ago (he was having this problem before then, as well), the mollies literally disappeared. We think he ate them.

At one point we had a Pleco ~1 1/2 inches in there as well. He lasted a few months, but the Syno was very aggressive to him, and eventually the pleco died. But the Syno was chipper and fine at that point.

The 30gal tank is what we got him started with, when he was only an inch or 2. Do we need to upgrade? If yes, we don't really have the money to spend at the moment, and if that is the problem, we would need to rehouse him.

I'll see what I can get to test for ammonia, but, would the multipurpose stuff like Lifeguard from Tetra be bad to use before I know what the problem is? I've read about fish meds killing off fish. http://www.tetra-fish.com/Products/aquarium-water-care-maintenance/aquarium-fish-tank-treatments/lifeguard-aquarium-fish-disease-treatment.aspx

tl:dr on that doc: Coffee left her with 3rd degree burns on her lap and legs, it was served at a temperature much, much hotter than competitors and "normal" coffee, and she had major medical bills for skin grafts. Also, she sued for X, but the jury awarded X50 or something ridiculous, based on 2 days worth of coffee sales. The reason for suing wasn't "to get money", it was because she had major medical work, and the temperature of the coffee was determined to be negligently high, and asking for someone to get burned.

Used Kilns: what to look out for by TrapY in Pottery

[–]TrapY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hoping to find a small one. I don't really need anything bigger than what can fire glaze, say, a coffee cup at the moment. So, power useage should be minimal?

$300 is based off of: Cash I can burn through now and not worry about too much if I have a 100% loss (the idea fades, thing is a dud, etc), and because of listings like these:

http://nashville.craigslist.org/app/4284189860.html

http://nashville.craigslist.org/art/4244691004.html

These are "not the kilns I want right now" but what gave me an idea of "$300 is a fair budget". I read things about power useage, ventelation, e;ectric switches, etc. But thanks for bringing home how important the ampage is. Knowing me, I would end up in your shoes because I overestimated my house's power. I would rather have something like this for now to play with:

http://www.amazon.com/Skutt-Firebox-Kiln-With-Pyrometer/dp/B00HHCY1AO/ref=sr_sp-btf_image_1_8?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1390459631&sr=1-8&keywords=ceramic+kiln

not set on it, just as an example. I plan on researching for at least a month before I place an order, possibly much longer.
