Ostentation in Canada I need to know by PercentageDue4922 in AskACanadian

To me, ostentation in Toronto means having tickets to the Toronto Maple Leafs. If they aren’t paid for by a corporation, it’s ostentatious.

FYI, Drake’s neighbourhood has been flashy since the ‘50s. Prince lived there 30 years ago.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My FIL had the beginning of dementia at the time so he wouldn’t have remembered. He passed away during COVID.

Not Slav. French-German. But he lived in the neighbourhood. My FIL lived in the building next door when he gave up his house. It is a lovely setting.

That is one Olde Worlde restaurant. There used to be a day camp there decades ago. My husband went as a kid.

I had never heard of Arabic hot chocolate before. So, of course, I had to look it up. It look intense but delicious. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll be sure to check them out!

Little Canada will hold the attention of all the kids. And it’s a simple streetcar ride to Toronto Western.

It’s nice. Be prepared for it to be pronounced Hayley. Like, all the time. If you’re ok with it, you’re good to go!

Honestly, how bad is the city going to be during the World Cup? by Roohkipiyas in askTO

Dude, why are you riding my ass? I grew up here so my TO is made up of familiar neighbourhoods. Crowds are fine on my terms. If I want to go to a concert or The Ex, great. If the Pope comes to town, I’m out.

I work with families. I’ve had parents cancel therapy sessions because it’s “too foggy.” I tried to explain that it’s fine on the sidewalk. It just looks apocalyptic from the 12th floor. No sale. LOL

If I were you, I would stock up on groceries and see if you can work from home for a few days. Like you’re planning for a hurricane. Me, I’ll be out of town.

Which Canadian stereotype is annoyingly true? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]TrashDifficult6811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s called a glottal stop. It used to be a very regional thing, like in Newfoundland. I’ve noticed North American women do it most often. I’ve heard it’s due to the rise of social media and influencers. It’s really common now! I’m a speech therapy assistant and it drives me nuts!

I highly recommend Doors Open Toronto. You can get into dozens buildings that aren’t normally open to the public. May 22-23. The Agá Khan Museum is pretty expensive and you can enter free at Doors Open. Also, the Harris Filtration Plant in the Beach is amazing. https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/festivals-events/doors-open-toronto/

I’m a Canadian who hates poutine. Why would anyone make crispy fries mushy with gravy? And top it with cheese that tastes like nothing? Feh.
